The Ruthless Dragon God

Chapter 5 - Introduction - II

Fourteen Years ago...

Wilfred Orion was a priest in the Church of Kronor. He was an old man in his 60s who ran an orphanage in the same church building.

That fateful rainy evening he was returning from the local market after buying the food supplies. Along his side were two boys of his orphanage helping him carry materials back to the church.

Keiran and Leo both were 8 and 7 years old respectively and was their weekly round of helping Father Wilfred with the duties of the church and orphanage.

The rain was pouring cats and dogs while the lightning and thunder had filled the sky. White bolts of lightning were running freely like a bunch of white horses in that grey meadows of clouds as the thunder of their hooves were ringing in people's ears down there.

Though this was storm was huge and domineering it had formed in the skies at all of sudden taking everyone by surprise. Due to this most of the people were left in the rains without any cover.

Same thing happened with the boys and the priest when they left for the market it was a well lit sunny, warm afternoon but till the time they reached the market clouds had started gathering in the sky.

By the time they were done buying supplies in market the overcast sky turned into a cloudy storm kind and cold winds started blowing in the sky. In a matter of few hours sunny weather had changed into a stormy one.

All three of them started rushing back quickly to the church, but in halfway the storm had caught up to them as they were drenched wet by the rain. They rushed back as quickly as they could without dropping their supplies.

Hours passed, evening changed into night and night into midnight but the rain refused to stop. The downpour of rain didn't decrease but increased with time. As the rain increased so did the lightnings and thunders. And as their intensity increased so did the amount of people in church.

Well people came to church due to two reasons.

First - the Geographical reason: Church was built a bit on the outskirts of village and was on higher ground. So when the water logging started in the streets people abandoned their belongings to go for higher ground.

Second - the Psychological/Spiritual reason: When calamity strikes and people are helpless and powerless against such calamity they run to Almighty and pray to him so that they could be saved against such calamity.

Slowly slowly almost whole of village filled in the church. All the orphanage staff and children who were big enough had to help the priest manage the situation.

When Leo was running to deliver the warm towels to the villagers he heard a faint crying sound out in the woods to the west of church. He felt it like it was a hallucination, but when he heard it again he was sure that a small child was crying.

Just to confirm and get a second opinion he called Keiran to check if his ears heard it correct. And right they were, together they approached the priest about this matter.

Father Wilfred was conversing with the village Chief and Sheriff about the situation and the steps to be taken if the weather turns more worse than present. When they heard about the crying baby in woods they all laughed saying, "You must have heard it wrong or it may have been a child present in church."

But seeing the determined look on the children's faces the priest couldn't just neglect it so he said,

"Why don't you take us to the spot where you heard the cry. It will help us confirming if you heard it right or maybe it was some other baby crying in church."

As the priest went with the children while the Chief and Sheriff followed them though a bit discontent about the matter. But when they reached the spot a bewildered look appeared on their face as all of them could hear the faint cries of baby coming from the wood and not from within the church.

A huge debate took place between the three of them about his matter but the priest couldn't abandon the a child. Not only was it against his beliefs but also it would have a negative effect on the minds of the children of the orphanage.

Together all three set out in the rain towards the wood. Sheriff and the Chief summoned out their beasts. Sheriff had a dog of about a 3 ft called the Devil Hound. It had a wine red skin covered by black fur on its body. On its head ran two white horns like devil.

While Sheriff had a Mud Wolf. It was smaller than Devil Hound in height but longer in length. It had a fur of brown colour with darker shade at feet and snout.

Both of these beasts could see excellent in dark and had strong smelling and hearing senses. The priests' beast had none of these qualities so he didn't summon it.

Sniffing to check human scent the beasts entered the forest with their human counterparts following them with a lantern and umbrella in hand. Though the cries of baby were getting louder but they were reducing in intensity.

The hound barked as the rest of them followed to the spot it was at. Below a tree in a basket was a boy lying wrapped in a cloth. The priest lifted him and together ran back to the church.

They placed him on the bed. The boy's clothes were drenched in rain as its body had fallen cold. He was shivering a lot because of cold. The Sheriff's Devil Hound stood nearby creating a small fire in its mouth which was just a bit warm which would not harm the baby.

The priest summoned out his beast as it came out flying and stood beside the boy. It was a small white dove. A warm white light came out of the dove's mouth as it slowly covered the baby healing it.

Slowly the cries returned in baby's mouth and then slowly came to a stop as he slept peacefully. Keiran and Leo were watching in delight as they stood by the side of bed.

Seeing them happy the Father was pleased. "Go bring the baby to a cradle to sleep in."

Though they were very young being in an orphanage they had handled quite a number of babies. Slowly they lifted him and brought him to an cradle. As they laid him down they saw something in his hands. "Father the baby is holding something in hands."

The baby was holding something of a dark colour in its hands. The father slowly pulled it out from its grips. It was a piece of wood which was very dark in colour. It was cleanly cut into a block of wood with rounded edges. It was simply a masterpiece cut out of wood. On it was something written carved out in that wood piece.

"Its just his name written on wood. His name is Rex"
