Chapter 20 : Rift

The atmosphere suddenly turned tense as Bai Wanjun and Shi Zheng fell silent, their expressions contorted with anger and frustration. They were both Shi Han's biological parents, and they had initially come to help her with her luggage. However, they were met with rejection and were asked to leave.

Bai Wanjun, in particular, struggled to control her temper. If it weren't for the presence of the elderly man by her side, she would have lashed out long ago, unable to tolerate being treated in such a disrespectful manner.

The situation was exacerbated by Bai Wanjun's attempt to manipulate the narrative, using the opportunity to play the victim and make Shi Han feel guilty. She approached her with feigned concern, wanting to bring tears in her eyes, but Shi Han was not swayed.

"This is your idea of caring?" Shi Han raised her hand, revealing several bloody stains on her once beautiful and fair skin. One wound, in particular, was deep, causing blood to seep out and the surrounding area to swell.

The injuries on Shi Han's hand were a testament to the struggles she had endured, both physically and emotionally. It was a painful reminder of the toxicity and manipulation she had experienced within her own family. Despite the pain, Shi Han stood strong, no longer willing to tolerate their mistreatment.

Bai Wanjun and Shi's father were left speechless, their expressions a mix of guilt and discomfort. They were confronted with the consequences of their actions, forced to confront the pain they had caused their own daughter.

She tightly pursed her lips, harboring an even deeper hatred towards the Shi family. If it weren't the reason she required an identity, she wouldn't have returned to the Shi family at all.

Shi Han's eyes grew colder and colder, and just as she was on the verge of severing all ties with the Shi family, a voice filled with fury reached her ears.

"Who did this—"

In the next moment, someone gently grasped her injured hand.

Shi Bei, filled with distress, didn't know what to do. He quickly turned to Butler Song, who stood behind him, and urgently said, "Quickly, call the family doctor."

"Yes, yes," replied the gray-haired Butler Song, visibly panicked as he immediately made the call.

The anxious expressions on their faces made Shi Han feel uncomfortable, causing her to withdraw her hand from their grasp. The concern they displayed clashed with her resentment towards the Shi family, further complicating her emotions.

In Shi Han's memories, the members of the Shi family had always been arrogant and unreasonable, treating her as an enemy. However, the old man standing before her seemed to view her as a highly important relative. Could it be that she had forgotten about him?

Shi Han entertained another possibility, but she still didn't want to become too close to the Shi family members. She felt uncomfortable as she instinctively pulled her hands back, hiding the injured one.

"I'm fine," she insisted.

Bai Wanjun chimed in, following her lead. "Dad, it's just a minor injury. Xiaohan herself said she's fine, so please don't be angry."

Shi Bei's anger flared, and he questioned, "Did you do this?"

"Xiaohan is your biological daughter. Don't you feel remorseful for hitting her so hard?" Shi Bei's voice was filled with accusation.

"How could I not feel distressed?" Bai Wanjun's tone instantly turned aggrieved.

Shi Han was also born through her pregnancy in October, so it was only natural for her to feel distressed. But it was just a minor injury—did they really expect her to kneel down and apologize?!

Shi Bei observed Bai Wanjun's affected demeanor without uttering a word, causing her to tremble under his gaze. Bai Wanjun came from a middle class family. During her college years, she had entered into a casual relationship with Shi Zheng, which eventually led to her marrying into the Shi family.

It could be said without reservation that she had transformed from a sparrow to a phoenix.

When they had gotten married, Shi Bei had always been opposed to their union.

Shi Zheng had taken her to kneel outside the door for an entire day and night, even in heavy rainfall. She had clung to her pregnant belly, on the verge of fainting, while Shi Bei had simply stood there, his expression emotionless.

From that moment on, whenever Bai Wanjun saw the old man's expression, she would be overcome with panic.

She mustered up the courage to address him, "Dad..."

"Shi Zheng, is this how you've taught her?" Shi Bei frowned.

For a wealthy family like theirs, the character of the married woman held great importance.

Marrying someone of questionable virtue would only bring turmoil to the household.

He had initially looked down on Bai Wanjun's pettiness, but he hadn't anticipated that even after so many years of marriage, she hadn't made any progress. Instead, her tendencies were growing stronger.

Shi Zheng knew that Shi Bei was on the verge of getting angry, so he forcefully pulled Bai Wanjun back and said, "Don't make our daughter unhappy. She's still young..."

He insinuated and attempted to shift the blame onto Shi Han. However, before he could finish his sentence, Shi Bei delivered a swift slap to the back of his head.

"Dad..."

"Shi Zheng, how many years have I lived? Don't play tricks in front of me. Do you think I can't understand what you're trying to say? What's the matter? Do you have a problem with Xiaohan?" Shi Bei's voice was stern.

Shi Zheng didn't dare to show any dissatisfaction and quickly shook his head, "No, no..."
