Chapter 19 : Fake love

Shi Han's gaze dropped to the back of Bai Wanjun's hand, and a visible expression of disgust crossed her face. She instinctively took a step back, simultaneously repositioning the suitcase to the opposite side of her hand.

Bai Wanjun's outstretched hand remained suspended in mid-air, frozen in a moment of awkwardness as her illusion of control shattered before Shi Han's palpable contempt.

Shi Han paid no heed to Bai Wanjun's embarrassment. She had no desire to involve herself further with the Shi family. Instead, she took two determined steps towards Shi Bei, locking eyes with the old man, and posed a straightforward question, "Can you truly be the one in charge of this family?"

A genuine smile graced the old man's face as he put his hands behind his back, meeting Shi Han's gaze with warmth and assurance. "Of course," he replied, his eyes carefully studying the face of his long-lost granddaughter who had been absent from his life for two years.

Despite his unkempt appearance and frail frame, lacking the accessories he usually wore, it was clear that Shi Bei had not taken care of himself. He seemed unable to escape the confines of a hospital bed.

Yet, amidst his frailty, the one solace he found was in the thought that his granddaughter was found and he hoped she wouldn't suffer outside anymore.

Shi Bei responded, his voice tinged with both regret and affection, "What is it that my little girl desires?"

"After some time, I would like to use the household registration book kept at home," Shi Han replied, her voice tinged with gratitude.

"Use it, use it," he waved his hand dismissively.

"Thank you," Shi Han whispered, bowing her head in acknowledgment.

Old Master Shi didn't want to let go of Shi Han's suitcase. He held onto it tightly, resembling a big bear cub.

Shi Han observed his childlike demeanor and couldn't help feeling a mix of emotions. She had forgotten about this side of him—the gentler, more endearing side.

Shi Han sighed softly and replied, "Grandfather, there are some things I need to take care of. It's better for me to leave for now."

Old Master Shi's face revealed a hint of disappointment, but he nodded understandingly. "Alright, my little girl, if you need any help, remember that this is your home. You can always come back."

She nodded, appreciating the sentiment behind his words. With a small smile, she finally freed her suitcase from his grasp and turned to leave the living room.

Bai Wanjun's voice trembled with concern as she questioned Shi Han's sudden departure, "Why did you have to rush out right after coming back? Quick, let's get someone to take your suitcase upstairs."

Shi's father, sensing the tension in the air, chimed in with an anxious tone, "Yes, indeed! Let's have someone immediately attend to the young lady's luggage and bring it upstairs."

Shi Han felt a surge of frustration as she found herself surrounded by family members, all vying for her attention and trying to claim her suitcase.

Bai Wanjun's pleading tone and the insincere concern in her words grated on Shi Han's nerves. She had no intention of confiding in her or seeking comfort from her.

Shi Han took a step back, firmly holding onto her suitcase. She looked at Bai Wanjun coldly and replied, "Thank you for your concern, but I prefer to handle things on my own. I don't need anyone to bring me food or take care of me."

Shi Yin, who was standing beside Bai Wanjun, was taken aback by Shi Han's assertive response. She realized that Shi Han had no intention of letting them control her or invade her personal space.

The tension in the room escalated as Shi Han's defiance became evident. It was clear that she was determined to assert her independence and keep her distance from the family.

Shi Yin clenched her teeth, well aware of her grandfather's favoritism towards Shi Han.

Now, it seemed like a deliberate act to play hard to get, perhaps orchestrated by Shi Han herself to bring their grandfather here from his training place.

Despite her dissatisfaction, Shi Yin understood that the current circumstances were unfavorable for her. Reluctantly, she joined the group surrounding Shi Han.

In an instant, Shi Han found herself encircled by people, each with a clear intention—to play a drama of a doting family in front of her grandfather.

Shi Zheng offered, "Are you short on funds? I'll transfer 500,000 yuan to your account later. Let me know if you need more."

Shi Yin eagerly added, "Sister, I've been practicing a new dish. I'll prepare it for you later. How about we have a nice meal together?"

Feeling overwhelmed by the suffocating atmosphere, Shi Han closed her eyes, pressing her fingers to her temples to prevent her headache from worsening.

At that moment, Bai Wanjun reached out and touched Shi Han's other hand. Observing that Shi Han was firmly holding onto the suitcase, she exerted all her strength to snatch it away.

Shi Han's eyes shot open, and she sternly commanded the people surrounding her, "Back off!"

Swearing was something she had always avoided. Even in moments of confrontation, she had never been so direct in telling people to leave her alone.
