After helping Li Lanni take a bath and change her clothes, Li Yuming helped her into her car and took her home.

The housekeeper welcomed them cheerfully. "Master, young miss, welcome home. Do you wish to eat anything?"

Li Lanni frowned and asked her mother. "Why did she call you 'master'? Shouldn't she call you 'madam'?

Li Yuming took her into her room before she explained, "Lanni, when you recover your memory, you will understand many things but for now you should know, I'm not married. You do not have a father and that's why I'm the only master here."

"Don't have a father..." somehow, she felt sad about it.

Li Yuming immediately regretted telling her that. It was as weird as telling a little child for the first time that they were fatherless. "Lanni, ever since you were little, it has always been just you and I. You were very happy and never missed him even once."

"Really?"

"Mmh. Don't be sad. Although he left us, he left a large fortune for you. That's how I've been able to take care of you all these years."

"Oh..." it still did not pacify her enough. Maybe losing her memory made her feel things she had thought she did not feel.

To change the topic, she looked around her room and caught sight of a painting of butterflies. It looked like a child's work.

She smiled as she remembered it. "When I was young, I painted that picture in a class competition. I won a trophy for it."

Li Yuming was elated. "Lanni! You remembered that. Yes, that was when you were eight. It was the most realistic painting in your class competition."

Li Yuming was very happy. The doctor had indeed mentioned that going to places she loved going to before and doing things she liked to do would help her a lot. It turned out to be true! Before the accident, Li Lanni would stare at this painting every time she was in her room.

So much that Li Yuming would feel jealous at times. It was childish, but how else would one feel if they were talking to someone and the other party was busy staring and smiling at something else?

Li Yuming pushed her gently into a sleeping position and covered her. "Lanni, you should rest a little more. Later, I'll take you for a little walk in the backyard. We will visit your favourite places for the next few days. The doctor said it would help you."

"Yes Mom."

Li Yuming kissed her forehead and let her rest. Perhaps because the effects of medicine had not worn off yet, she slept all afternoon and only woke up after night fell. Her mother was waiting for her to wake up before she could call her for dinner.

"You're awake. Can you walk a little?...Just forget it, I'll bring your dinner here."

"What about our walk?" she w.h.i.n.ed.

Her mother smiled. "Let's go tomorrow. It's already late right now and you wouldn't be able to enjoy the view."

...

The next day, Li Lanni insisted on going for that walk immediately after they had lunch. The sun was a little warm and bright, just the right temperature for one to take a stroll in their home.

Only then did she realize just how big their home was.

While they passed by the garden, she asked her mother, "Don't I go to school?"

Her mother replied, "You do. You're currently attending the same university as Feifei. Right, Feifei is your childhood friend. You grew up together."

She was going to ask about her husband when a voice called out behind them. "Lanni, Aunty!"

It was Ji Feifei. She strutted over to them. "Lanni, I went to the hospital and they said you were discharged, so I came here."

"I was bored at the hospital." she said.

Ji Feifei smiled at Li Yuming radiantly. "Aunty, shouldn't you be at work today? You don't have to worry too much about Lanni. I'll take care of her."

Li Yuming liked this young woman very much. "I'll go tomorrow. You girls must have a lot to catch up on. Don't let Lanni walk too much." she urged and went back to the house.

The two girls did not talk much, merely admiring the compound a little and going back to the house. Li Lanni noticed what looked like a note under her pillow when they entered her room.

Ji Feifei teased her immediately. "Someone has an admirer, eh?"

"Don't tease me. Didn't you say I'm married? Maybe it's just from mum."

But when she opened it, the content said othewise.

[Dear Lanni, Vile creatures disguise themselves as good people and cling onto you. I'm sorry that I cannot reveal my identity for now but I hope you trust me. Since you lost your memory, I'm indebted to tell you this. Your childhood friend is a pretender.]
