Chapter 22 - Cultivation Realms

"Pill concocting? I thought this was a combat focused sect." Said a surprised Blake.

"The majority of the disciples here have fire as their Qi nature, which helps a lot in alchemy." Explained Little Xun.

"Qi nature? What's that?" Blake was still confused about this.

"Ah, sorry. I forgot you aren't knowledgeable about these things yet, Sister Blake. The third test is about Qi natures, I will explain it there." Little Xun had a slightly embarrassed expression. Fang Qing shook his head while smiling.

They turned their attention to the combat test. Only Blake was paying close attention though, the other two have seen this already.

The combat test was done through the use of a illusion spell array. Once someone stepped inside the array, it would sense the strength of them.

They will first fight a opponent weaker than them made by the array, then they will fight a opponent of equal strength. If they win, they fight a opponent 1 stage above them until they lose.

Talking about cultivation stages, Blake asked about the name of the cultivation realms. Little Xun said he only knew three, Body Refinement, Qi Emission and Core Formation, each realm having 9 stages. He doesn't know any realm above that.

By the way, Little Xun is in the fifth stage of the Body Refinement realm, Fang Qing is in the eighth stage, and Blake is in the first stage.

Riolu strength is unknown, but he is either slightly weaker or slightly stronger than Fang Qing. Probably slightly stronger since he leveled up.

Back to the sect she was now staring at someone who was around 16 years old by his looks, who just entered a illusion array.

There were around ten of those arrays, they all needed Spirit Stones to make and maintain, it was pretty expensive by Little Xun comment. A small sect only used one.

The boy who Blake was watching was in the second stage of the Body Refinement realm according to Little Xun, something pretty rare considering nearly everyone else was a mortal or was is in the fist stage.

Just as he stepped into the array, a humanoid shadow the same size as him appeared in front of him. The boy attacked first.

He kicked the shadow who was probably in the first stage in the c.h.e.s.t, the shadow was sent back by the impact. The boy didn't let the shadow get it's guard up, he ran forward and directly punched it in the head. The shadow fell down and disappeared, the fight was over.

It wasn't a surprise really, the first shadow was always weaker, and could be easily overwhelmed by brute strength. Anyone who lost to the first shadow had abysmal chances of passing, they needed exceptional talent in everything else.

The second shadow appeared in front of the boy, and he ran it at a fast speed. He kicked it the same way the he did with the shadow earlier, but it avoided his kick and punched him!

The boy hurriedly retreated, his face contorting in pain, the shadow didn't chase him. The second shadow was meant to be a test of one skill in battle, it has the strength of someone in the same realm as you.

It was made that way so you couldn't simply overpower it, some skill in battle being needed. The boy and the shadow started to fight again, this time the boy was more careful.

Their fight was close, the boy wasn't some weakling with no fighting experience but he never fought with someone just as strong as himself.

In the end he barely defeated the second shadow and was instantly beaten down by the third shadow. The shadow vanished and the injuries the boy had also disappeared.

It was just a illusion array after all, nothing that happened there affected reality. It was similar to Genjutsu in a way. Blake was amazed at the fact everyone could see the illusion, not only the person who stepped in it.

She turned her attention to the pill concocting test. The participants were expected to make a simple Qi Recovery pill, either a medium grade one or two low grade pills.

All participants were provided with a cauldron and three sets of ingredients. By the looks of things, the sect wasn't completely shameless, and properly used the money from the entrance fee to make a good test. These ingredients weren't cheap.

Blake watched a girl who was taking this test, she had a nervous face as she put the ingredients in the cauldron, but kept her calm, her hands not shaking.

To make a pill you needed the exact amount of ingredients as the recipe, a simple pill like this had a slight margin of error, but it was by no means easy. This era lacks equipment to make precise measurements, so people could rely only on their intuition.

The girl finally stopped putting ingredients in the cauldron, and activated the spirit artifact below it. Fire came out of it and it started to heat the cauldron. She increased and decreased the fire, if anything, alchemy at the novice stage is almost like cooking.

The liquid inside the cauldron was glowing, these ingredients weren't ordinary. As the liquid brightness increased, the girl had sweat rolling down her forehead as she adjusted the temperature. The moment of truth was coming closer, any errors now will down the quality of the pill.

The liquid inside suddenly began to move, and the brightness merged in the middle of the liquid. A pill was left there, floating in the liquid that had now lost it's glow.

The girl smiled in joy as she examined the pill, it was at least medium grade. She passed the alchemy test.

Blake now turned her attention to the third test, the one about Qi natures.
