Chapter 53 - A Certain Receptionist's Monologue

"Hooaaaahem…."

I was feeling sleepy thanks to my night shift. Even though my real job was not a receptionist, that lass and even the Guild Master forced me to do this job.

[Sigh. I am not even a guild's personnel, how could they force me to be their receptionist?]

I am a 2-star mercenary with my base in Green River City. I am not an outstanding mercenary nor experienced. I even spent almost six years to pass the 2-Star Mercenary Examination.

And here I am, standing alone at the receptionist desk. It's not like my job was the receptionist or it was my part-time job. I was simply forced by the guild master himself. Why? The reason was very simple. The guild didn't have enough personnel here.

The Mercenary Guild was opened 24 hours a day, so it would be hard for only one receptionist to share their work shift. They were in need of new personnel. New receptionist.

And the prerequisite to be a receptionist in the Mercenary Guild was a little problematic. It is not that problematic, but the quality of education in this place was bad. They had to have the capability to read, write, and count the numbers.

The problem was only one. It was very rare for someone so educated in this city.

There are some mercenaries who were educated in the Mercenary Guild. It was not a rare thing. But most of them were unwilling to be a mere receptionist.

From my observation, there are three reasons why those educated people were unwilling to be a receptionist.

One, their aspiration was to become a 5-star mercenary. They wanted to bask in the light of glory as a 5-star mercenary, even though a 5-star mercenary was very rare. Well, even a 3-star mercenary would have their own fame. Even in this Grade 1 Mercenary City, there was not even one 5-star mercenary. You could say that they were more like an idol existence or even a myth.

Two, they had some background or backing.

Mercenary Guild was the guild with the highest number of member. Their member was spread, from a beginner until a veteran. Of course, many people wished to hire those veteran mercenaries, for example, merchant house, nobility, dominant and big families, military department, and many more. But those veteran mercenaries was limited in number and their price was very high.

So, they had to have another idea other than hiring veteran mercenary directly. They pulled and nurtured the young but skilled mercenary to them, in exchange for funding for the young mercenary. Well, you could say that it was a win-win solution. The young mercenary would get a stable income, and they would have a capable mercenary. To sum it up, they weren't in a need for some cash.

[Don't worry, I was paid as the receptionist here.]

One of the most important things for a mercenary is cash, or more exactly a funding. Each time you went to subjugate some Fierce Beast, there was a lot of spending. Weapon, armour, medicine, food ration, and even miscellaneous items. Sometimes even the reward from the job couldn't cover their spending. That was the sad reality for any beginner mercenary. And if you had to do your job in a group or team, you would have to divide your small amount of rewards fairly among the members.

Three, who could be meticulous enough to be a receptionist? The job of receptionist contained a lot of data and information. They had to check every information and job that came in and out. They also had to sort every job that arrived at this Mercenary Guild. Sometimes there were some stupid requests like 'Help me to get the horn of Red Scarlet Bull'. Oh please, Red Scarlet Bull was a tier 4 Fierce Beast that was comparable to tier 5 Fierce Beast in the difficulty. This is only a small 1-star Mercenary City, no one was capable to do your request.

That's why the prerequisite of a receptionist was the capability to write, read, and counting. If you put the wrong information on the job description, then voila. Don't ask me what would happen.

And this was my bad luck. At one day because the receptionist accidentally saw me writing a letter to my parents, they dragged me into the Mercenary Guild. They threatened me to be their receptionist at night with the stake of my mercenary qualification.

This mercenary qualification, or what most people call with identification, was the proof for someone as a mercenary. Without it, you would be unable to receive any job.

How could the guild master want to threaten someone with their identification?

Since I am a powerless man, all I can do is doing this annoying job as a receptionist at night. Fortunately, people rarely came in the night.

[Sigh.]

There were still a few hours before my job as a receptionist, eh I mean before I could return to my inn. I didn't have the time to rest after doing my job, thanks to this receptionist job.

The old me would always get some sleep after finishing the job. But now? I had to stand in the Mercenary Guild as a receptionist until morning. After that, I could finally enjoy my sleep time.

Thanks to this receptionist job, I had to decrease my usual job. My shift was for the night only. But fortunately, the pay as the receptionist was not too shabby.

[If I could find my substitute. . .]

[Sigh. . .]

[Hm? There is an opening door's sound? Someone come?] I shifted my attention to the door of the Mercenary Guild.

[A little kid? Why did this kid come in the dawn? It was very rare for someone this small come to the place like Mercenary Guild.]

[This kid's appearance was a little messy. Well, it was messy and a little dirty. She had a luggage tied around her neck and she even had a little bird in her hand. Seriously?]

When the little kid came in, she was looking everywhere like a little child with a lot of curiosity.

[Ah, looks like I know what will happen. The usual pattern for every little child after came into the Mercenary Guild.]

The little kid came to me after looking around the interior of the Mercenary Guild.

[Don't worry, kid. There was nothing outstanding in this place.]

The little kid was looking around me as if she was making sure of something. After a while, she just said to me, "I want to join the Mercenary Guild."

[See? What I told you.]

[The usual pattern of a little kid.]
