Episode 5 – My Reason for Choosing You (2)

He once asked Edelis to tell him the truth, saying that he would not be shocked and would accept it.

Edelis then explained in more detail.

“Lehan, I like your name, and I like your red hair. I think it goes very well with your golden eyes. I would like to be friends with you. Let’s get along well in the future.”

Lehan’s words that he was a gladiator who had killed others were in vain.

“If I had known you before, I would have taken you out of the arena sooner. I would have taught you the importance of life… I’ll teach you about the importance of life from now on!”

From then on, Lehan had to listen to Edelis’ words about the importance of life for a long time.

“And if the people around you are trying to harm life, you need to be able to stop them!”

“The people around me?”

“Yes, this is the most important thing. You need to be able to stop others from doing wrong. Do you understand?”

“…Yes.”

As time passed and Lehan recovered, the Earl, who had been keeping an eye on him from the moment he arrived at the mansion, called him in.

“Earl, I have brought Lehan.”

“Come in.”

The butler reported briefly outside the door, and Earl Brill gave his permission.

As Lehan opened the door with a trembling heart and entered, Earl Brill, who had the same golden hair as Edelis, was sitting.

When Lehan entered the room, Earl Brill took out a bag from the drawer without saying a word and placed it on the table.

And the butler took it and handed it to Lehan.

The bag that the butler opened and showed contained a large amount of gold coins.

It was not a lot of money for the Earl, but if Lehan was alone, it was an amount that would not be a problem for at least one year.

“Take it and get out of here. With that money, you can find a small room and you won’t have to worry about your living expenses for a while.”

Lehan was finally sure.

Edelis had really brought him in out of kindness.

‘I was constantly wondering where the truth begins and where the lie ends.’

But he was about to be sent away as soon as he recovered, not even assigned to a mission.

And it was the Earl, who had never seen him before, who told him this, not Edelis, who had shown him kindness.

‘Then this means my Lady may not be aware of this situation.’

Lehan finally felt like he had escaped the fate of a gladiator.

The fate of constantly killing other people under orders in order to live.

Earl Brill gestured to Lehan to leave, who was standing still.

However, Lehan placed the bag he received from the butler on the Earl’s desk.

The Earl’s lips twitched at the sight.

“I want to repay the lady who took me out of the arena.”

“And how are you going to do that?”

The Earl laughed.

“Anyway, the Lady will…”

The door of the Earl’s office, which had been quiet, suddenly opened with a bang, and Edelis, who was not hiding her displeasure, came in.

“Can someone explain to me what is going on here? Father?”

Edelis was furious, speaking each word in turn. Her eyes turned to the Earl.

“Th,this is…”

He looked weak, unlike when he tried to cut Lehan off like a knife and ordered him leave.

“The physician informed me that his state is much better now…”

“And even if he does, is it okay to kick him out without even telling it to me first?”

As expected, Edelis did not know that the Earl was trying to kick him out.

“Ah, my Edelis. Gladiators are inherently dangerous. So, unless there is a very special reason, it is rare to allow them to enter. Especially for a noble woman like you.”

“Lehan has already left the arena. He is no longer a gladiator!”

Edelis shouted firmly, trying to prevent Lehan from leaving the mansion.

“Even if he did leave the gladiatorial arena, he is still the same. Don’t you know of any stories of gladiators who tried to kill their master and were killed in the process?”

The Earl’s voice rose, and Edelis’ eyes filled with tears.

An uncomfortable silence fell between them.

“My Lord.”

Lehan spoke quietly, and two pairs of eyes turned to him.

“…I don’t know what the other gladiators did.”

“So, are you implying you’re different?”

“However, if the Lady had not taken me out of the arena, I might be dead by now.”

He had been in the residence for several days.

If Lehan were still in the arena, he would have already fought a few more times after that.

He would have died in a short time, knowing he wouldn’t be able to receive proper treatment.

Unless if someone hadn’t miraculously brought him in, like Edelis.

Lehan took a deep breath. “I want to use my life, which would have been lost anyway, for the young lady who saved me.”

Edelis was surprised. She hadn’t expected Lehan to want to stay with her.

She was a little worried that he might want to live outside, contrary to her expectations.

Lehan looked at his father with unwavering eyes.

Earl Brill continued to directly look at him.

“If you think I’m a threat, appoint a knight who can subdue me.”

To be honest, Edelis brought Lehan for her own safety.

But she felt guilty because she didn’t know Lehan would say something like that.

Everything she did was for herself…

But Lehan’s support was a great strength for Edelis.

Edelis was aware she was being selfish at the beginning, but she wants to be good to Lehan from now on.

It would be more convenient and safer for Lehan to live here than in the arena.

“That’s right, father! If you’re worried, you can just assign another knight to me! You were going to assign a knight to me anyway, right? Lehan and I will go together.”

Edelis, seeing that the Earl’s eyes had softened, tried to persuade him even harder.

In fact, it was very inconvenient to carry around a few escort knights.

But if Edelis could be with Lehan, she would have accepted even if they had told me that a knight’s order will accompany her, not just one or two knights.

“Lehan is also good at swordsmanship. He was famous in the arena.”

“Wouldn’t it be better to have two knights instead?”

“No, I like Lehan. Then we’ll go with four, two knights and Lehan.”

The Earl’s face showed that he was uncomfortable when she said she liked Lehan.

However, it seemed that only the Earl was worried about it, and Edelis and Lehan both had a look of desperation on their faces.

“A gladiator is fundamentally for killing, not protection like an escort.”

“Then please let me train with the knights.”

“Lehan has only ever lived in the arena, so he doesn’t know anything about the world. If he goes out into the world without guidance, he might be exposed to crime again. So, it might be better to teach him how to work here.”

Edelis and Lehan continued to try to persuade the Earl.

Lehan also persuaded the Earl that he would train hard and protect Edelis from those who would harm her.

“Sigh…“

“Father, please. Honestly, if Lehan had wanted to hurt me, he had plenty of opportunities. But he didn’t, did he?”

In fact, Edelis didn’t realize it, and Lehan didn’t feel the need to say it, but there was a knight hiding in a distance who could rush to Edelis if Lehan showed any sign of doing harm.

The Earl thought that Edelis’ words made sense.

In the end, the Earl nodded in agreement after Edelis continued to persuade him. After all, there is no parent who can win against their child.

As Edelis said, Lehan and Edelis would not be alone, and with the two knights, they could safely protect Edelis even if an unexpected situation arose.

“If anything happens to Edelis…”

The Earl said, threatening Lehan.

“I will walk out on my own.”

Luka: Young Lehan and Edelis illustrations! They are so cute! It’s also funny that the Earl cannot win against his daughter hahhaha he definitely have a soft spot for her.
