Episode 6 – Unfinished Tales (1)

“You won’t be able to leave easily.”

“I know.”

The earl wanted things to go back to the way they were before (when Edelis hadn’t brought Lehan in), but he thought that Edelis might be in even more danger if he chased Lehan away without irrefutable reason.

“Alright. Then, Edelis and Lehan will always be accompanied by a knight each. If you two accept that, then I will allow Lehan to stay.”

“All right! Thank you! Thank you so much! Daddy is the best!”

Edelis took a step back and bowed to the earl.

“Father is more well-versed in the knights than I am, so please choose on my behalf! Thank you!”

Edelis bowed courteously to the earl, then grabbed Lehan by the wrist and turned her back.

Lehan looked back and forth between the earl and Edelis, wondering if he could follow her.

When the earl reluctantly nodded his head in approval, Lehan immediately followed her out of the earl’s office.

“Lehan, this is great! Now you can stay in the residence!”

Edelis looked at him with joy, but she was immediately startled by his tightly closed lips.

She couldn’t just be happy because her father’s words were on his mind.

“Ah, that… Father didn’t mean it in a bad way.”

“I know. It’s not much different from what most people think of gladiators.”

“…I’m sorry. I apologize on his behalf.”

“No, it’s okay.”

In the end, Lehan had to listen to his father’s threats.

She would have been very upset if she were in his shoes.

But she was in a position where she still had to ask for her father’s permission, so she couldn’t entirely avoid the situation.

“I’ll do better in the future!”

She understood her father’s feelings, but her situation was more urgent now.

She had to treat Lehan better so that he could forget the bad memories as soon as possible.

“My lady, this is more than enough.”

“What are you talking about? I still have a long way to go!”

Lehan has decided to stay, and he says he wants to stay here himself.

Plus, he said he would protect Edelis himself, so everything was going smoothly.

“Really, my lady…”

Lehan smiled awkwardly, knelt down, and took Edelis’ hand. He put his forehead to the back of her hand.

The sunlight shone through the window, illuminating him.

It was a reverent moment, like the ordination of a Holy Empire paladin.

“I will protect you with my life, always.”

Edelis was taken aback by Lehan’s sudden oath.

He had already promised to protect her in front of her father, but this time, he was swearing to her with all his heart.

He said he would protect her, no matter what.

“Continue?”

“Except if you decided to throw me away, my lady.”

“I would never throw you away.”

When Lehan raised his head, his eyes were shining as brightly as the sun, and he smiled gently.

Edelis felt like crying, but she smiled brightly.

After that, Lehan was assigned to the Knights’ Order and had to train with the knights to build up his strength.

At first, the knights who had been wary of Lehan began to relax a little as they saw him working silently.

Then, the knights who started to spar with Lehan by chance were in a frenzy to spar with him every day to learn the unique techniques of the gladiator.

“…I have no choice. As promised, I will recognize Lehan as your escort.”

In the end, the earl recognized Lehan as Edelis’ escort.

“Thank you, Daddy!”

As Edelis greeted him with a bright smile, the earl couldn’t help but to smile back.

She wanted to tell Lehan the news right away, but it was not yet time for him to finish his training.

“Lehan’s training will be over soon. Then, shall we go to the town together and buy him a present?”

Lehan, who had become accustomed to Edelis visiting him these days, had strangely changed his behavior towards her.

He was more proactive in following Edelis than before, and his expressions became gradually more diverse.

Every time she saw him like that, Edelis felt proud for no reason.

‘I wonder how happy he will be to hear that he has been finally recognized as my escort!’

In the past, when Lehan moved around the mansion, a knight had to be assigned to him as a guard.

And when he moved with Edelis, two knights had to be taken with him to subdue Lehan, and a total of four people had to move.

But now, Lehan and Edelis can walk alone together!

Edelis giggled as she thought about what Lehan would like.

Edelis changed into light clothes to wear when she went out, and went to the study to wait for him, while looking for something to read.

…Up to this point, her actions were not very different from usual, but something different caught her eye.

The spine of the book was glowing again.

‘Why, it is glowing again… Wouldn’t it be over if I knew the future?’

After that, for a while, nothing happened, so Edelis tried to forget it.

Edelis remembered that the book was true every time I saw Lehan in front of her.

But now that it’s so peaceful, she wants to ignore the dark future.

However, her efforts were in vain, and the back of the book was shining again, as she saw before Lehan came.

Edelis took out the book with trembling hands. No matter how dark the future was, she had to see it with her own eyes.

‘Just like I brought Lehan before and made a plan, I can prepare for it.’

Even if it is just a temporary measure, even if it is insufficient.

‘Yes. This book is not all bad. Thanks to this book, I was able to meet Lehan.’

Having that kind of mindset, Edelis felt a little more okay.

Things have been going well since she rescued Lehan from the arena, and he’s also completely adapted to life here, so Edelis is sure that things are fine.

“Okay, I’m fine now. I’m fine. I’m going to be fine.”

Edelis took a deep breath and courageously opened the book.

She looked at it carefully, but there was no additional content in the front.

She turned the pages one by one, until she reached the part where she died.

She paused for a moment, but she didn’t read it and quickly turned the page.

And a few pages later, she saw that new text had been added.

Based on the location, it must have been the story after she died.

‘Then there’s nothing significant in this part, right? After all, I’m already dead at this point.’

As before, a bright light shone from the pages. And again, the contents of the book began to appear as a video.

Finally, what the book showed was even more desperate than before, and it was difficult for Edelis to bear, contrary to her expectations.

* * *

『Eliminate the traitors!』

A deep bass voice shouted.

A large number of knights who had been surrounding the castle in a row rushed to the castle, shouting in his words.

But the number of knights surrounding it from all sides was too large, and it was impossible to shoot arrows at the knights surrounding the castle from the castle.

A catapult threw a large rock and broke the castle wall. It was like starting a war against a single castle.

Finally, when the gate was broken and opened by the knights, the knights who had reorganized their ranks rushed in.

The knights faced them with a tense look on their faces.

Edelis knew their faces. She had just seen them at the training ground.

At that moment, she realized that it was her own family who were branded as traitors.

‘Treason? Nonsense! On what grounds?’

The people who had just been laughing and greeting her were shot and stabbed with arrows and swords.

“N,no! No!!”

She shook her head and cried out, but it was no use.

She wanted to reach out and help the man wearing the cloak with the earl’s crest, but her hands just fumbled in the air, unable to reach him.

The earl’s household members were losing their lives in vain. It was a one-sided massacre.

The earl’s household could no longer do anything in the face of the overwhelming number and skill gap of the imperial knights who were invading in the front.

The imperial army quickly penetrated the castle and turned everything upside down.
