Chapter 5: A Poor Family

Li Xiu’e fed the baby girl with half a bowl of corn paste. The baby girl now seemed really satisfied. She yawned and closed her eyes. She couldn’t help but want to sleep now.

“The baby is really good. She doesn’t cry or make any noise. She sleeps when she is full. How cute she is.”

Li Xiu’e held the baby girl gently and felt the tenderness of a baby. She looked at the baby girl adoringly.

“Just keep the girl if you like.”

Su Hu smiled and looked at his wife. “We only have to prepare something more to eat. I can always work harder. I can go up the mountain to cut more firewood and send it to the town to sell. Winter is coming. The firewood is selling fast, so I can make more money.”

“It takes seven or eight miles to go to the town.”

Li Xiu’e looked kind of worried. “It’s cold out. The injury on your leg might relapse. If you walk too much, your knees will get sore. You’d better not go to town. Just sell the woods to the rich people across the river.”

Su Hu shook his head and said, “They all have fixed firewood resources across the river. The price is meager, and we can’t get much money.”

Li Xiu’s said with worried eyes, “But I am worried about your leg.” Her arms were slightly shaking with the quilt

“Hoo…”

The little baby girl lying in Li Xiu’e’s arms was sleeping. Hearing the couple’s conversation, she opened her eyes with some tears and looked around at the poor family’s house. Her worried adoptive parents looked at their two emaciated and haggard kids and sighed.

“Master, there is a hundred-year-old ginseng in the mountain forest 100 meters away from the courtyard wall.”

The little bird and the baby girl could read the minds of each other. The bird smelt the hundred-year-old ginseng and immediately told its master about this treasure.

The little girl chuckled.

When the little girl heard the little bird’s voice, she started smiling.

“Look, the baby girl is smiling again. She is really a delightful baby.”

Li Xiu’e shifted her attention in an instant and looked at the baby girl’s delicate pink face. She thought she could just look at the baby girl all day.

“I wish it were our own daughter.”

Su Hu also turned his eyes to the baby girl. He unconsciously wanted to pinch her with his rough hands. The baby girl’s face was full of collagen, which looked really smooth and tender.

“Don’t. Your hands are rough. I am afraid that you might cut the baby’s skin.”

Li Xiu’e quickly slapped Su Hu’s hand and pretended to be angry.

“Well, I forgot about this.” Su Hu withdrew his hand and scratched the back of his head. He then just smiled at the baby girl.

The little girl was moved by Li Xiu’e’s behavior of protecting her. She let go of the little bird and pointed to the mountain forest outside the courtyard wall with her little hand. The little girl tried hard to urge Li Xiu’e to go out.

“Well, what do you want, little girl?”

Li Xiu’e and her husband were confused and could not understand her baby’s language.

“Chirp!”

The baby bird helped the baby girl secretly. It fluttered its delicate wings, hovered over the baby girl’s head, and then flew out.

“My sister wants to go out and play.”

Doudou, the four-year-old boy, immediately understood the meaning of the baby girl.

He also wanted to go out and play.

The little girl seemed to be responding to Doudou. She kept nodding and struggled hard as if she wanted to get out. She held on to Li Xiu’e’s sleeve and insisted that she follow the bird.

“Come on, let’s what’s out there.”

Su Hu knew there must be something strange outside the room. He lifted his legs and got out of bed. Then he put on his shoes and pushed the door open.

“Let’s follow them.”

Qiaoqiao and Doudou also wanted to go out to play, so they jumped out of bed and ran to the fence door with their shoes on.
