Chapter 4: I Like the Baby Girl

“How are we going to take care of this baby?”

Su Hu rubbed his hands to keep warm by the fire and kicked the brazier toward the bed with his toes slightly hooked.

“You are the head of the family. What do you say?”

Li Xiu’e took a clean towel from the washstand at the door and tried to dry his hair.

“It’s hard for us to raise another baby in this situation!”

Su Hu squinted at the baby girl who was in the basket. She didn’t cry or make any noise. Holding the baby bird, she opened her eyes and looked around curiously. Su Hu couldn’t help sighing.

“Mom, my brother is hungry. When can I have breakfast?”

As Su Hu and Li Xiu’e were talking, a short girl with a pigtail came from the next room. She seemed to be seven or eight years old. She was holding a boy of about four years old with her right hand.

The clothes of the two children were covered with patches. They were sallow and skinny and looked malnourished and poorly developed.

“The breakfast is on the steamer. I’ll bring it to you now.”

Facing the two children, Li Xiu’e showed a loving smile and walked briskly out of the room to the kitchen. After a while, she came back with a dish.

“Su Hu, let’s eat.”

She asked her husband and children to go to bed, handed the only steamed bun to her husband, and gave two cooked sweet potatoes, one big and one small, to the two children. She took a bowl of corn paste mixed with vegetables and had it with a spoon.

The little girl must smell the food. She sniffed with her delicate little nose, opened her mouth, and began to cry softly.

“The baby girl may be hungry.”

Li Xiu’e paused for a moment. She put down the bowl, came to the basket, carefully picked up the baby girl, scooped up some corn paste with a spoon, and tried to feed the baby girl.

The little baby girl then started chewing.

She seemed very happy. She was still chewing with a smile after she swallowed the corn paste.

“The baby girl is good. She can eat corn paste. I think we could raise her easily.”

Su Hu watched happily and picked up some crumbs of the steamed bun with his chopsticks and shook them in front of the baby girl.

The little baby girl waved her hands. She was obviously interested in the crumbs.

“Don’t fool around. The newborn baby has a weak stomach and can only eat liquid food.”

Li Xiu’e pretended to be angry, slapped Su Hu’s hand, and continued to feed the baby girl with corn paste.

“Mon, did you pick her up somewhere?”

The eight-year-old girl was already sensible. Seeing her parents teasing the baby girl, she could not help being curious. She finished the sweet potato in three bites, went to her mother’s side, and carefully looked at the baby girl.

“Yes, I found this poor girl in the river. Then I let your father jump into the water and get her out.”

Hearing her daughter’s question, Li Xiu’e suddenly felt uneasy. She was afraid that her own kids would become dissatisfied and complain about the baby girl. She picked up an unknown baby girl from outside, which could worsen the poor family.

“This little baby girl is beautiful. I like her.”

Li Xiu’e’s daughter had not spoken, but her son beside her suddenly said that he liked the baby girl. He reached out his tiny hand and wanted to touch the small face that looked very tender and delicious.

“Doudou, do you like the little girl?”

Li Xiu’e’s eyes lit up, and she touched her son’s head happily. She was very pleased that her son liked the baby girl.

“Yeah, right. I like the baby girl.”

The boy widened his eyes and said that he liked the baby girl clearly.

“I also like her. I prefer a sister to a brother. She can accompany me and help you with your work when she grows up.”

When her daughter saw that her brother said he liked the baby girl first, she glanced at him and quickly showed her fondness for the baby girl in front of her parents. She was afraid of offending her parents. She did not want her parents to think that she was petty. She tried to seem more generous than his brother.

“Qiaoqiao is a sensible girl now. I am really happy for you.”

Li Xiu’e felt much more relieved after hearing her daughter’s words. She rubbed his daughter’s head lovingly and felt proud of her daughter.
