Episode 25: I’m Going To You (VI)

Murloc, of course, said nothing. He knew he was drunk, and faced with evidence, he thought he really might have done it.

Grandfather clicked his tongue disapprovingly.

“What a good look in front of your nephew and niece, Murloc. Drunk and smashing presents?”

“That, that…”

“I wouldn’t bother asking for compensation because it’s cheap. Still, spend a week on probation and reflect.”

“Ah, Father!”

“It’s not the bracelet that’s the problem, it’s because the way you look now is pathetic! If this happens one more time, you know that you will be banned from drinking for the rest of your life.”

“…Yes, Father— no, Count, I will be careful.”

I exchanged glances with Ethan.

It was clear that Roystan would be scolded by Murloc again later for bringing up the bracelet.

Anyway, just like that, the bracelet case was sorted out.

I went back to my seat, holding the seal lightly.

Grandfather sighed and changed the subject.

“Oh, and Rosie. I have one more thing to say.”

“Yes, Grandfather. Please speak.”

“Come to my office for lunch. We need to talk about the engagement to the Duke of Diefenril.”

Everyone’s eyes widened. Grandfather said with a slightly disapproving face.

“Last night, there was a direct call from the Duchy of Diefenril. I heard that Rosie Noart is included in the list of betrothal subjects to be considered at the Diefenril senate meeting.”

Ah.

It was really good news.

‘I can finally meet Zahid!’

My heart was pounding.

And the faces of my relatives all became contemplative.

It was because if I became engaged to the Duke of Diefenril, they would no longer be able to ignore me.

“Father, about that marriage.”

The depressed Murloc immediately stepped forward.

“In the long run, there is nothing to gain for the Noart family. Diefenril will collapse soon. Then what is the use of the former glory of the duchy?”

Grandfather glared at Murloc. He was outraged.

“Benefit? Do I look like a person who will do business with my granddaughter’s marriage? Even after making so much money, getting my 12-year-old granddaughter engaged for money? Huh?”

“That, that… hmm…”

Murloc immediately lowered his eyes.

After which, Felide stepped up.

“But Father, it’s too dangerous to unite with the Duchy of Diefenril to keep the temple in check. Noart’s enemy is the temple, but even though Rosie is weak, she has the blood of the temple mixed in, so it’s a bit difficult to get her to do something important…”

“What a funny statement. Does Rosie not have my blood mixed in as well?”

I shifted my gaze to the side and let out a sigh of relief.

The one and only thing I was worried about was the bloodline related to the temple.

But Grandfather seemed to have no objection to it.

“Did she express her divine power because she wanted it? I hate temples, not innocent children.”

For a moment, it felt like warmth was spreading in my heart.

This was Grandfather’s declaration at breakfast.

—Even though Rosie was a temple apprentice, I don’t hate it at all. So, you other family members, don’t harp about it.

“Father, but…”

My aunt, Monica, spoke up.

“Apart from everything, Rosie is still too young. And she’s pretty stupid for her age. Ultimately, betrothal is a union between two families. Rosie is still lacking to be shown to the outside world.”

Monica continued without even looking at me.

“Did you hear? How she turned the 137 billion gold handed over by her brother into dust.”

Julian muttered a small curse and put his hand in his pocket.

It was as if he was trying to get that damn slingshot out.

“She didn’t hesitate to give away such a large amount of money, simply based on the words of the Julian of the past, who said to invest in magic stones… I don’t know when Julian said that, but it must have been before the romstone mine was developed.”

I looked at Julian and shook my head, telling him to not do it.

I really didn’t want the slingshot to appear here.

“No notion of time, no concept of investment, no sense of numbers… How could we give such a stupid child to the Duchy of Diefenril?”

Monica went on and on.

“Even if it has come to this point due to an unavoidable crisis, Diefenril is Diefenril. We will only be humiliated for nothing.”

Most of my relatives nodded vigorously at the sharp words.

Grandfather, too, gave little reply, squinting his eyes.

“Are you okay?”

Ethan whispered.

“Looks like their bones hurt. That’s a hard fact to refute. It’s 137 billion gold? From a rational point of view, using it on magic stones is pitiful.”
(TL/N: ‘their bones hurt’ means feeling ‘sore’ over something.)

I shrugged. Ethan continued to babble.

“Investment is about results. How much of the 137 billion gold is left now? 100 million? Once you lose it, there is no answer.”

And in the midst of that, Julian was gnashing his teeth and shaking his legs.

With his slingshot held tight, he seemed impatient to step out.

“Brother, please wait a little longer.”

I desperately calmed his anger.

And in my heart, I thought that I must throw away that slingshot today.

“Please hold on. Please.”

It was then.

The dining room door opened and servants with dessert plates entered.

‘It’s now.’

The servants were also carrying today’s newspaper in their hands.

Yes, it was just about time for the paper to be delivered.

“When does the newspaper come with the dessert plate? It’s another round of discussion about how the world works. Every word is tested from Grandfather. I really can’t eat anything.”

About the style of this breakfast, Julian had told me before.

“Rosie Rosie is also a Noart, so you can go there with this brother. There are many delicious things. But… The atmosphere is so bloody that they will dismiss Rosie.”

“Is it that cruel?”

“Yes. You have to read the newspaper when it comes. Do you know? Grandfather is obsessed with newspapers. It’s to the point where it’s delivered to the annex everyday along with breakfast… The breakfast… Let’s learn all the letters before going.”

I smiled without saying anything.

Quietly, I waited for the dessert plate and the newspaper.

After a while, the eyes of those who checked the newspaper widened.

It was because of the headline that decorated the front page.

Romstone mine development failed!

At that moment, I was the only one who touched the dessert plate.

Contrary to the expectations of the temple, the inside is empty, so the supply is less than 1% of the expected amount.

Well.

The dessert, chocolate cake, was soft and very delicious.

Prices of magic stones begin to surge.

Everyone was staring at the newspaper, frozen.

I smiled softly and said to Ethan.

“Ethan, you said that investing is about results, right? Then can I talk now?”

Silence fell over the table.

And the one who broke that silence was Julian.

“Wow, I must have been a real genius…”

Oh.

It was unavoidable that Julian got the credit for the investment in magic stones.

Since it would be difficult if there was any suspicion later.

I wouldn’t be able to answer why I put all the money into magic stones.

So I had no choice but to say that I think I heard something from Julian before…

“It wasn’t really a joke… What am I going to do with this crazy talent…”

Julian, who had been muttering, eventually hit the table and laughed heartily.

“Among these idiots, I’m the only genius, I’m the only one! I’m so great that everyone has no choice but to keep it in check. Hahahahahaha!”

Hahaha…

Without realizing it, my head slowly lowered.

In the silent dining room, only Julian’s boastful voice echoed.

“Is it easy to make money? Is it easy to invest? But I made that decision. Hahahaha! My little sister remembers it again! Hahahaha!”

Well.

‘It’s a bit embarrassing for some reason, but, well, it’s okay for Julian to be happy, right?’

But why couldn’t I raise my head…

“What’s wrong? Is your throat blocked? Why aren’t you saying something? Everyone was freaking out over nothing, you should say something with your open mouth! Hahahaha!”

The dining room was eventually filled with the sound of Julian’s laughter.

“…Julian.”

And, interrupting that haughty laugh, Grandfather said.

“You, stay after breakfast.”

“What?”

“Looking at your dining etiquette, it’s clear that your memory is gone. I have to figure out what’s going on.”

Just like that, Julian was immediately summoned by Grandfather.

I thought to myself while laughing.

‘Zahid.’

‘Finally, I got a lot of money.’

‘I can go get you now.’

Wait a little longer.
