Chapter 2 – Part 1 out of 2

Wednesday.

Jiang Tao didn’t tell her grandma about the blind date and went out at eleven o’clock with the excuse of a friend’s treat. Cao An had chosen a barbecue restaurant located in a shopping mall newly opened in Tong City last year. It took half an hour by taxi and was very popular.

Sitting in the back seat of the car, Jiang Tao flipped through the chat records between her and Cao An. Cao An’s tone conveyed politeness. He praised her photos and also arranged to have a meal together without being overly enthusiastic and attentive. Jiang Tao wondered if it was because he had a sense of boundaries or if he wasn’t very enthusiastic about this blind date just like her but was too embarrassed to refuse the head nurse.

Either way, Jiang Tao felt no pressure. If Cao An didn’t like her, she had no regrets. If he did like her, she could choose to accept or reject him according to her own preferences.

The road was clear, and at 11:30, Jiang Tao got out of the car. They agreed to meet at twelve o’clock, Jiang Tao went to the women’s clothing floor first. In early March, down jackets were still required, but all kinds of brightly coloured spring clothes had long been hung in the shopping malls.

At 11:50, Cao An sent a message: “I’m here, at table number nine; the waiter will show you the way.”

Jiang Tao replied: “Okay, see you later.”

She took the escalator to the floor where the barbecue shop was located. During peak mealtime, there was a long line of diners sitting outside the barbecue restaurant. Jiang Tao guessed that Cao An might have come to line up a long time ago; otherwise, he wouldn’t have gotten a seat already.

“Hello,” she said to one of the waiters outside. “My friend is at table 9.”

“Okay,” replied the waiter politely. “Please follow me this way.”

The atmosphere in the shop was very lively. Smoke from the barbecue steamed above each table and was quickly sucked away by the smoke exhaust machine.

Coming to meet a completely unfamiliar man, Jiang Tao was still somewhat nervous.

“It’s just around the corner,” said the waiter.

Following his reminder, Jiang Tao’s heart beat slightly faster, but she pretended to smile easily.

As a nurse, Jiang Tao was very good at smiling like a spring breeze. However, when she turned around and looked forward, she met a man in black who, at first glance, looked like someone who could not be messed with.

He was gloomy and strong.

Jiang Tao was so frightened that she didn’t even see his facial features clearly. She forgot to laugh or say anything else and looked away in a panic.

The man was sitting in the row on the left, and she looked to the right, took two steps, and then took out her phone, pretending that something was wrong.

At this time, Jiang Tao even forgot about her blind date. There was only one thought in her mind: That man with such a dark aura must not pay attention to her!

“Here it is,” said the waiter as he stopped and turned to look at Jiang Tao.

Jiang Tao looked at the table number on the table next to him, at the chest of the man sitting opposite, and then at the waiter.

The waiter’s eyes flickered; he was obviously afraid of the male diner at table nine. He left in a hurry after completing his task of leading the way.

Jiang Tao was still in a daze! How could it be this person?

“Jiang Tao?” said the man as he stood up. His voice was deep and cold.

Hearing her name called out from his mouth, Jiang Tao immediately understood that there was no misunderstanding; this was indeed the blind date introduced by the head nurse.

Although there were a lot of doubts in her heart and she was too scared to look at the other party’s face, Jiang Tao still had to maintain basic courtesy and smile at the other party as naturally as possible.

“Hello, have you been waiting for a long time?”

Cao An replied: “Fortunately, I just arrived. Take a seat.”

Jiang Tao nodded and sat on the seat opposite. She looked at the tabletop, at the black casual shirt on the other side of the table. Her head was still stiff; she didn’t dare to vent her breath, and she didn’t dare to move.

Seeing her like this, Cao An understood.

When Aunt Biao first informed him that the little nurse had agreed to try it, Cao An thought that the little nurse was soft and bold. But now it seemed that Aunt Biao had dug a hole for the little nurse.

“This is the photo I sent to my aunt. Isn’t this the one she showed you?”

The long and broad hand handed over the phone, and a photo was displayed on the screen.

A photo of life; the man was also sitting on the sofa, but his whole face was shown, expressionless, as if to comply with the elders’ request to take pictures.

Jiang Tao could clearly see Cao An’s facial features in this photo: wheat-coloured skin, sharp brows, narrow eyes, a thin face, and a cold outline.

Like a lonely and steep mountain or a wolf that does not allow any uninvited guests to step into its territory, it is silent and dangerous.

The aura of that body almost burst out of the photo.

Jiang Tao looked down; her hands on her lap were clenched together uncomfortably.

She had seen too many mafia bosses on TV: some had fierce faces and beat and killed at every turn, while others had a refined temperament and were good guys who usually only ordered their younger brothers to do bad things.

Cao An wasn’t any of the types in it, but he was more like a mafia boss than those actors.

The evidence was that the diners at the next table didn’t dare to look at Cao An and didn’t dare to laugh or talk freely. The barbecue restaurant was so big, but this side had formed a low-pressure zone centering on Cao An.

If Cao An were shorter, his wolf-like aura might be lighter, but he was 1.9 meters tall, and casual shirts couldn’t hide his muscular figure!

“No, it’s not,” Jiang Tao shook her head at Cao An with her eyelashes drooping.

“What did she show you?” Cao An asked.

Jiang Tao briefly described.

“That should be a photo of me from ten years ago when I was still in college. My cousin used that photo to trick the woman into meeting me. I’m sorry,” Cao An said.

Jiang Tao remained silent.

""

Ten years ago, Cao An was just 20 years old, but she was very sure that the masculinity in the head nurse’s photo was already very mature and that it was completely different from the male college students in her impression.

The phone vibrated suddenly, and Jiang Tao seemed to be grasping at straws.

It was the head nurse.

Jiang Tao needed to take a breath and said to Cao An, “It’s a call from the hospital. I’ll go outside to pick it up.”
