She found herself in a dimly lit area and, disoriented, rose from her seat to survey the area. She noticed Do-Yoon quietly reading a book to her left, illuminated by a single candle flame.

What is the individual engaging in while in the dark? What text might they be studying? Furthermore, how long has she been in a state of slumber?

She could not discern the time from the clock on the wall due to the darkness. As she approached Do-Yoon, who had risen from the bed, he seemed to sense her presence. He then diverted his gaze from the book to her.

“Is everything all right? Did you have a restful sleep?”

“Yes, I had a restful sleep. What book are you currently reading?”

The book concerning emergency treatment, which appears to be the one the health teacher was reading, was found on the desk. It is beneficial to know such information.

He focused his attention on the book, illuminated by the flickering candlelight. The image of a figure struggling to contain their anguish and the accompanying text was visible, causing a look of distress on his face.

Acquiring knowledge of first aid would be beneficial. However, she extended her arm and covered the book he was reading.

“Prolonged exposure to darkness can have a detrimental effect on your vision. It is advisable to avoid reading in dimly lit environments.”

“I’m okay…”

“Is it possible to ascertain the current time? Additionally, how many hours of sleep have I obtained?”

He then glanced at his wristwatch, which indicated the time was 1 o’clock. Han Ji-Ah followed his gaze and also noticed the timepiece.

“It’s 1 o’clock.”

“Could you please explain why I was not awoken at the appointed time? Am I to assume that you are feeling fatigued?”

“I assumed you were fatigued, so I refrained from disturbing your rest. I am doing well.”

“What tasks did you complete while I was asleep?”

“I researched available medications and utilized the internet to investigate the current state of affairs. I found this to be an engaging activity.”

“It is now 1 am, so I suggest you get some rest. Aim to wake up at 7 am.”

She encouraged him to rise and gently guided him to the bed. She draped the blanket over him as an indication of rest and was about to depart when he grasped her sleeve.

“Why?”

“I am comfortable with not getting enough sleep; however, I must admit that I am apprehensive.”

“Scared of what?”

“I fear not having you in my life when I wake up.”

“What would be the rationale for my attendance, given the current zombies roaming around? I am not willing to risk going outside in this scenario.”

“Still…”

“Where am I not going?”

“Would you mind staying with me until I drift off?”

“What?”

She suppressed a laugh as she pondered if she had misheard something.

“Even though I won’t be far away, I will still be there, correct?”

“Nevertheless, being physically present and being nearby are two distinct experiences. I remained by your side until you drifted off to sleep.”

“But you’re not showing affection, so why bother…”

“I’m still young.”

What is the reasoning behind his manner of speaking? He is no longer a child, as he is now 20 years old; thus, he should conduct himself more maturely.

“At 20 years old, you are no longer a child but an adult. You are expected to conduct yourself in a manner befitting an adult. Are you still afraid of the dark, for example?”

“Yes, I’m scared.”

“What strategies did you employ to remain alone during the evening?”

“If I had taken the initiative to light a candle, the situation would have been satisfactory.”

“May I light a candle next to you?”

He released her hand and was about to depart when a monotonous voice sounded from behind.

“Do you hate me, sister?”

“Is the reason you are making this statement due to my absence? Honestly…”

She exhaled quietly and rotated to face him. Upon doing so, he stood up from his chair and gazed at her tearfully.

“When did I make that statement? You appear exhausted, so please promptly retire for the evening.”

“You failed to address me by my name.”

“…Yeah, Do-Yoon.”

“Noona…”

He softly uttered her name, his eyes filled with tears. Regretfully, she felt remorseful.

“I have a great appreciation for Noona, and I would like to have the opportunity to be with you.”

He was unable to articulate his thoughts and was visibly emotional. Han Ji-Ah was taken aback and unsure of how to react. What is the appropriate response when an adult is in tears? What could have caused the distress? She was sure she had not said anything to upset him, so why was he crying?
