An Inevitable Fate?

Chapter 61 - 61: There's no future for us. (24)

"Who is the patient's family?"

The doctor looked confused seeing so many people in front of the room.

"Me!"

Both Rachel and Jane rushed towards the doctor.

The doctor signaled them to follow and soon reached the consulting room.

"Doctor, how is my father?" Jane asked as soon as they sat.

He took a minute and started to explain the patient's condition.

"The patient suffered a mild heart attack. According to the results, he does not have diabetes, and his blood pressure is normal. So, due to the sudden stress or some emotional variation, the heart attack might have occurred. Did anything happen that triggered the patient?"

Rachel slowly nodded her head.

"The oxygen and the blood supplying arteries to the heart were blocked. We have treated it already. As of now, there's nothing serious as the patient was admitted on time. If not then the consequences would have been more dangerous. That could have led to a major heart attack, costing his life. Anyhow, we have kept him under 24 hours observation. We will inform about the further procedure after that."

"Thank you, doctor," Rachel spoke.

She looked at Jane who was in a trance. She took hold of her hand and gestured to walk.

Like a doll, Jane walked out with Rachel. The doctor's words kept repeating in her mind.

'Sudden stress...emotional variations...mild heart attack...the patient would have suffered from a major heart attack...costing his life...'

"Jane, are you listening to me?"

Rachel shook her. The girl looked so out of her mind that no matter how many times she spoke, she didn't even blink.

Slowly, Jane turned towards Rachel. The look in her eyes scared Rachel to her core.

"Jane," Rachel whispered.

"Dad had a heart attack,"

She looked like she was mumbling to herself.

"A minor. Dad is fine."

Rachel tried to console her. She was just a young girl. She must have got scared.

"Due to stress, emotional variation."

"Jane, listen, dad is fine. Okay? We should be strong. I will go inform mom and-"

"Tell her what? That he suffered a heart attack because of stress? The stress that you caused?"

"Jane-"

Rachel was in disbelief. Jane continued without giving her a chance to speak.

"Were all those photos real, sis?"

Rachel fell silent. She felt cold all of a sudden.

"Haha, sis, I never thought, of all the people in the world, you to betray all of us. How could you do this to our family even after taking care of you for so many years? Dad never told us but we all knew, he trusted you the most."

"He trusted you so much that he let you marry my brother. He trusted you so much that he treated you like his own daughter even after my brother died. Because he trusted you, he arranged a re-marriage for you. But... but what did you do? You cheated! You betrayed him! You betrayed Darren! You betrayed... my brother."

Jane remembered how Rachel had rejected every marriage offer she had got due to Eric's death. She knew Rachel loved her brother more than anyone. Hence, they had stopped forcing her.

Later on, though Rachel agreed to get married again, Jane knew that she wasn't happy about that. She had thought it was because Rachel had still feelings for her brother. She had felt bad as well as proud of her sister-in-law. But now? Rachel was with another man! Behind their back!

"Sis, why did you do it? You aren't such kind of person, right? He must have forced you to be with him? Or do you have true feelings for him? Sis, the love you had towards my brother... was it all fake?"

"Jane!" Rachel shouted.

"Speak whatever you want about me. But you don't get to judge my feelings for Eric! Not now, never! Understand?"

Tears were flowing out of her eyes and she didn't try to wipe them.

Jane got stunned. This was the first time Rachel had shouted at her.

"Tell mom not to worry about dad. Ask her to stay with you in the hospital."

Jane clenched her fist and went back to the previous floor.

Rachel wiped her tears before walking away.

She was still wearing the banquet dress with Darren's blazer on her shoulders. After paying the hospital bill, she walked out of the hospital.

It was midnight. She was all alone, standing in the middle of an empty road. Taking a last glance at the floor where Colin was admitted, she took a deep breath and marched away.
