Chapter 11: Treasure

Ye Li was extremely excited. He was already itching to fill up Gu Qingchi's schedule for the next year.

He spoke so fast that Gu Qingchi was almost overwhelmed.

"Let me think, we managed to get on this variety show last minute to maintain interest in you, you don’t need to think too much of it. It doesn't matter if you don't have good variety sense. Don’t worry if you can’t get a word in, just stay on the side…”

After a few days of contact, Ye Li had gotten a little bit of a grasp on Gu Qingchi's personality.

Quiet, a person of few words, indifferent to the outside world. Like a cat, he preferred to hide away in a corner. No, the Dragon Li cat Gu Qingchi raised was much more lively than he was. Otherwise, it would have been impossible for someone with a face like that to remain unknown.

It can only be said that he himself didn’t have any interest in showbiz.

In fact, Ye Li was only able to sign him was due to a bit of luck.

The fact that Ye Li took like a fish to water within the entertainment circle wasn’t without reason. When he went to the western restaurant, he found out that Gu Qingchi seemed to be short of money and had just lost his job.

Gu Qingchi's personality saved him a lot of worries, but it wasn’t very suitable for the entertainment industry.

If it was an artist with a good variety sense, it wasn’t uncommon for them to become popular through a variety show that was currently trending.

This wasn’t a big deal though. Ye Li didn't expect Gu Qingchi to become popular with this variety show. It was simply a buffer.

Although, even if it was just a buffer, Ye Li still didn't handle it carelessly. He found the best resources he could find.

This variety show was currently on the rise. The resident guests were all popular or mega-popular celebrities, and the temporary guests were also well-known artists, including some big names.

With Ye Li as his manager, Gu Qingchi's starting point was already the finishing point for many people.

This was far from enough, Ye Li thought calmly. In a sense, variety shows can be said to have no threshold. So long as there was a connection, getting on one or two episodes was nothing.

Their journey had only just begun.

Ye Li finally stopped. He picked up the cup on the table and took a sip.

Seeing him stop, Gu Qingchi hesitatingly spoke.

"There's one thing I don't know if I should mention..."

Ye Li gestured for him to continue.

Gu Qingchi then slowly continued speaking.

"I had been married before."

Ye Li spit out all the water. He put the cup on the table and raised his head in embarrassment.

"What?"

"I was married, two years ago."

Gu Qingchi raised his eyes to look at him, his back facing the light. In Ye Li’s perspective, his eyes seemed to be full of shattered starlight. Gu Qingchi added.

"You didn't ask before, so I’m reporting it now."

Gu Qingchi really hadn’t thought about this issue. It was only after Ye Li just mentioned that marriage and love should be reported to him that he considered whether this issue should be reported to him as well.

Ye Li collapsed a little bit.  To have a hidden marriage at the very beginning was really making things too difficult.

Plus, the idea of Gu Qingchi being married was a little hard to accept. He couldn't imagine what kind of person someone like Gu Qingchi would marry.  He massaged his temples.

"You said you were single."

"Yes, I divorced at the beginning of this year, around the time of the Spring Festival."

Ye Li calmed down a bit. Only then did he notice that Gu Qingchi said “had been married”, past perfect tense.

"Is there any contact now?"

Gu Qingchi shook his head.

"We were married for two years, and until now, we haven't been in contact."

"What about the other party? Is it possible they’ll come back to pester you?”

Ye Li had seen many celebrities who were dragged down by relatives after becoming famous.

"They’re doing pretty well, pretty rich. The other party was the one to propose getting divorced, so they probably won’t bother me in the future.”

Gu Qingchi’s mood became a bit heavy. Those two years were like jail time for him, and he didn't want to mention it unless it was necessary.

Ye Li had already calmed down, but his brain was still thinking.

"Then it's the same as not having one. You absolutely cannot mention this to the public. You are single."

Then he said dryly: "Condolences, bah, what I mean is, it's okay, don't be sad."

From the implications of Gu Qingchi’s words, Ye Li pieced together a melodramatic story of a young man marrying into a wealthy family and then being ruthlessly abandoned.

Moreover, when he met Gu Qingchi, he was still living in a tube-shaped building. Five or six people lived in a partitioned room of 40 to 50 square meters. He had lost his job and was raising a stray cat which could be found all over the streets.

It seemed that the "rich family" didn't suffer at all, and nothing was distributed to Gu Qingchi.

Many people in the entertainment industry had married into wealthy families, and Ye Li had seen a lot.

There were some who married for love and some whose intentions were less clear. Wealthy families were not easy to marry, and rich people were not stupid. They would arrange a prenuptial agreement before getting married, making it virtually impossible for them to be taken advantage of.

But most of them would at least give the other party a breakup fee.

Gu Qingchi was taken advantage of for two years and then left the marriage with nothing. This was actually pretty rare.

Ye Li cursed silently.

What kind of deep-seated hatred was this? You’ve already slept with him, the flower has already been picked. The least you could do would be to give him money to settle down elsewhere, make up for the loss of his youth.  To force him out of the house with nothing was too excessive.

But what was even more incomprehensible to Ye Li was what kind of a person was able to get with someone like Gu Qingchi and then abandon him like an old shoe?

Once you had such a person, you could practically do whatever you wanted to him, making him cry because of you, begging you.

Just thinking about it would make you feel reluctant to let go.

Such a treasure should be cupped in the palm of your hand, hidden away in a safe place, guarded day and night like a dragon guarding its treasure.

The most beautiful rose in the world grew in your back garden.

The brightest gems in the world lay in your jewelry box.

The most moving nightingale in the world sings in your cage.

The brightest star in the world fell in the palm of your hand.

Gaia's golden apples were in your possession.

You should be awake day and night, guarding it closely. You shouldn’t be abandoning it like an old shoe.

Gaining such a treasure and then unhesitatingly throwing it away.

Who the hell could do such a thing?
