The Zombie Queen’s Second Chance [Rewrite Ongoing]

Around 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning, the sky has already been dark for some time, inside the blackened hallway, a person cautiously stepped towards the last floor with a weapon in hand.

"Are there still more apartments?"

"Doesn't matter, we'll take a look anyway."

"There are some empty apartments, they're either empty or…"

The man in front snapped at the one who complained, "It doesn't matter, our orders were to bring back her body after making sure she's dead"

"Plus, if there are really people upstairs, we could score some food for ourselves."

The two climbed in the dark, silent without any unnecessary movements. Without entering any apartments, they looked through the peephole – the light inside was brighter than in the stairwell, not a soul in sight.

They ate the loss; the first area was empty but now they worried about an ability user's possible appearance through a half-opened door. After confirming the two closest homes to the stairway were empty, they were about to head deeper when a dog suddenly started barking.

The two jumped back and bumped into each other while staying quiet. The noise made the dog bark more furiously – it almost seemed like there was more than one!

"Retreat! Let's get out of here!"

They could barely deal with an ability user, let alone a bunch of rabid dogs like the ones outside. As for searching, the doors were closed and one could not enter without a key.

Chu Lixue confirmed, looking from her windows, that the people from earlier had left. Her dog was happily barking and wagging her tail leaving afterimages.

Chu Lixue put on spare slippers and went back to the bedroom. After putting her awaken daughter back to sleep, she closed the heavy curtains that blocked outside light, and used a lamp on the nearby nightstand instead.

The woman slept on the ground with closed eyes. Her elegant face could not be hidden behind paleness, injury and blood loss.

Chu Lixue, standing next to the bed, couldn't help but be a little jealous. The girl could only be described as 'beautiful' or a 'fairy'.

"Well, at the very least she seems to have some ability to protect herself...", she marveled.

After her transmigration, Chu Lixue had never thought of getting together with a man. Since the future was unpredictable, who knew if he would betray her when he realized her secret. Her value during the Apocalypse was very high. The truth was that Chu Lixue could not gamble, even more not bet on her future. She wouldn't get a third chance.

As for a girlfriend? She didn't really think about it. While it's true that during the Apocalypse, a lot of people don't have a choice but to turn to their own s.e.x, but that wasn't the case for her. Even through she had nothing against them, she wasn't really interested in a relationship like that.

However, Chu Lixue now had an unexpected beauty lying on her floor. She had only previously seen one similarly beautiful person, a powerful lightning user near the place she worked. All she could remember from that time were pools of blood coming out of dead zombies.

The woman was not ordinary and there was no way to guarantee her good will. While Chu Lixue could imprison a normal person, it would be very difficult to control another ability user. Because of that, she was now confused. She promised her daughter to save the 'beautiful older sister', and she did! So, could she now leave her outside in the hallway? Probably not...

The troublemakers had fled, and after seeing that she had a fever, Chu Lixue fed her their last anti-inflammatory drugs. If her body was strong enough, she would survive. If not then she would not have much time, and Chu Lixue would only lose her medicaments.

Chu Lixue bent down, deciding to pick her up and place her on her bed. If she lost her now, her investment would be bleak.

'I should have just left her on the stairs... I need to learn more control, can't always give in to my daughter', thought Chu Lixue.

When she moved, she felt a movement from her side. Chu Lixue turned and saw a pair of narrowed eyes. In the dim light, the woman's sharp eyes were pretty scary.

*Badump, badump, badump*

Chu Lixue's heart was beating really fast. Asleep, the lady was like a fairy, awake she seemed more like a demoness. Perhaps it had been a trick of the light?

Chu Lixue's brain ran in circles, unsure of what to do. The woman's eyes started to become clearer, and seeing a somewhat familiar woman, her eyes became gentle as she whispered, "Give me water, please..."

Chu Lixue recovered, thankfully the woman didn't seem to bear much hostility towards her. She handed her a glass of water over, but due to the c.h.e.s.t injury, she ended up needing to feed her the water.

Her lips somewhat moistened after drinking it. She thought back of her surroundings – soft bed, wardrobe and furniture. Prior to passing out she had been on cold stairs; it must be the mother and daughter pair's home.

"Are we inside your home?" Her voice was hoarse, but pretty nice to hear.

"Ah?" Chu Lixue was distracted by her thoughts, so she didn't manage to hear what the woman has said to her.
