The Time When Me And My Family Went To Other World

Chapter 12 - Blacksmithing Lesson #1

"First things first, tell me what do you know about Blacksmithing, kid." urged Grandpa Doh.

"What I do know is that is the art of taking ore and turning it into something useful such as tools or equipment or even structure materials. You use high temperature to make metal moldable, like some kind of dough, and hammer it into shape, depending on the characteristics of the final product you would heat it more or less, quench it or let it cool in the air, but how to achieve the characteristics you d.e.s.i.r.e, I know nothing." I replied from my impressions of the fantasy games who were more realistic and from the little bit of study from the history lessons the teacher would give a glimpse of feudal lifestyles.

"Very nice, well done, you have a good understanding of the overall knowledge in metalurgy, but as you said you know nothing about the process utilized in manufacturing anything, we also use other materials to make things, not just metals, although it makes the biggest portion of what we make and use, we also work with leather, wood and magic items, since they are the base to make weapons more attuned to some kind of Mana, for example if you use a Fire Mana Stone in the forging of a knife it will make it so it gathers the Fire Mana in the vicinity." he explains "But this is way up ahead, you shall get there someday."

"By the way Grandpa what are Professions and how do they affect us? We had no such thing from where I came from, so does that mean that if I didn't get it from the Gods Blessings, there would be no hope for me? How does one get the Profession? What about Skills of Trade? How do they affect a person? Is it better to have more? How do I get them?" I threw over a barrage of questions towards Grandpa.

"Hum... It seems Brontus and Kavko forgot to do this introduction to both of you... Well, sit down, since this will be a lengthy talk." he motioned his hands towards a barrel and I sat on top of it as he also dragged a small chair over "Everything in this world is a blessing brought by the Gods themselves or by what they did to make this world the way it is, so it is accepted that the Professions and Skills are also part of what they blessed us with. Profession are ways to measure your achievement for retaining a certain amount of skill in an area of knowledge, as they develop it eases the burden on the body from doing the same exhausting work, making even easier to learn new knowledge as well, as long as it matches the assigned level towards that type of knowledge, which brings us to levels, they are a way to measure the total experience you have amassed on that certain area, if you make the same work every day you will get experience as well, but learning new things or experimenting with materials even if they don't make anything useful or even explode will still give more experience, since you are learning what DOESN'T work!" he exclaimed "But having someone teaching you the way forward is the best way to amass that experience first while later is better if you try different things yourself. Each profession and skill that are possible to amass experience and are not some kind of buff can level up, for example your Woodcutting and Smelting, the maximum level is 10. So after getting the amount of experience towards that profession it will unlock a new tier, profession have five tiers, Apprentice, Amateur, Veteran, Expert and Master, after Master there is no more tiers to unlock, so normally people try to mix different knowledge to their profession and according to the experience you amassed in that area and different ones you can unlock a new Profession, kind of like a mix between two Professions or the knowledge and a Profession can give birth to a new one, eh?"

he asked "Are you still following, kid?"

"Yes! Profession are recognition from Gods!" I said trying to resume the idea.

"That's a'ight, but remember that levels are determined by experience and you amass it by learning and researching the trade, there is no shortcut, also new trades can be developed with old one as base so you do not get stuck in your development. The third and last way is through the acceptance of Gods for any service you have done for the development of the Races or for a milestone that has been achieved, such as winning your first life and death battle in the wilds as you did. Those are the three know ways to get those jobs, the first is the blessing you are born with, second is derivatives of owned jobs and knowledge and the third is the milestones, achievements or contribution towards the Gods and Races that get recognition. Now do you remember that yourself had a level?" he asked looking at me.

"Yes, I remember" I answered back "If I am not mistaken, it was Level 1."

"You got that right, eh, so how do you think you get stronger and increase such level?" he asked with a grin.

"I think by raising the level of the Professions?" I asked back for the answer.

"Yes, that's right, so each level increased for your jobs it makes your level higher and increases some of your stats that were available in display from the Eye of the Gods, the status increase depends on the level and professional upgraded, for example your Blacksmithing will increase sometimes your Strength and sometimes your Wisdom, depending on the level and tier. Higher tiers and levels of mastery requires more experience on those areas as well. That is why it is hard to get the maximum level in Master tier, the only plus is that if you are getting experience on a derivation of your base profession you can acc.u.mulate experience simultaneously." He finishes the explanation on professions "Now let this old man take a break from talking too much and get us some drinks, I will ask Rir to explain to your wife too, since it will be better for the baby if she has a stronger body. Ah, and you can increase your level by, also, becoming a better person in the view of one or all of the seven and such progress will also be recognized and increases your level just like that, the stat growth are determined by the Seven too." he said as he left.

So there is also that way to make yourself better, that is a relief to not need to gain so much experience towards improvement, it helps, but is not necessary.

He comes back with some drinks.

"Where was I?" he asks while sitting and drinking some tea.

"Finished leveling and was about to go talk about Skills of Trade." I complement his question.

"Well, those are random Skills that you always have activated as your Ki Sensing or that you doing some action it will make it easier, such as your Woodcutting which makes easier to cut wood and that's it, if there are other types, sincerely I don't know, because it is kind of very hard to have those bestowed upon any individual." he said while he looked a little bit lost "But they progress as you use, only it doesn't if they are always active."

"Okay, Master Doh, let's do this lesson." I said enthusiastically "What are we going to learn first?"

"Gahahaha, first you are going to learn about the safety in the Forge.

Rule number one! Never touch the flame or any hot metal with your b.a.r.e hands! Always use tongs and leather gloves.

Rule number two, never stare directly in the furnace when it is fully on if you don't want to go blind, eh?

Rule number three, always have all procedures and schematics memorized before starting any project or even if it is a big one a process of such project, to minimize accidents and waste.

Rule number four, only leave the Forge of there is someone to watch the furnace cool or else watch it cool down, before leaving or close it if is the Earthen Flame one.

Got that, kid?"

"Yes! No flame touching, no flame watching directly, no stupid moves and watch cooling for possible hazards." I try to resume the whole safety in these short sentences.

"Gahahahahhahaha, I like those 'No stupid moves' of yours! Gahahahahhaha!" he started laughing his a.s.s off "You are a really funny apprentice."

After almost two minutes of laughs he could start to breath in normally.

"Haha... Well, first pick up the hammer and that bar to your right. We shall start your lesson with the basics of the Blacksmithing, put on the apron and the leather gloves" he said while getting up and going close to a coal forge in the left.

I put on the gloves and went and picked up the hammer and the ingot bar, the bar was normal thin iron bar and the hammer was one with a wide circular flat tip with some rounding in the edges in one side and the other was a smaller and sharper but still flat tip with no rounding in the edges.

As I walk towards the Forge I see, that it is completely burning with coal with a bellows held in place by a pair of pliers stuck on the table directly pointing towards the bottom part of the Forge.

"Now, the Forge is ready, this is the optimal temperature for the material you are dealing with today, but if it starts to lower too much try using the bellows to heat it up a bit, if it still drops quickly try to add some more fuel to burn, but this is just right for a lil'chap as yerself." he said "Now take one tip of the bar and put it on the flame." I put it in, a little while after "Now the bar is red hot right? Take it out, I shall first teach how to draw out the metal." He says as I pull out the burning red iron bar "Hit it with the flat tip to see what happens" He said and I try to hit it while holding it in the air "Hol'up chap, get yer a.s.s to the anvil got it?" As he points to my back, there is an anvil right beside the forge, but on my back since I am facing Master Doh, so I just put it on top of the flat side and start hammering with the wide flat tip flatly.

After some hitting I barely notice the difference but it looks like it elongated towards the tip a bit, but also flattened a lot.

"Now that way you draw out the metal, BUT!" he shouts at me "See this, thickhead? You just hit it at the same side so it is all flattened and not at all elongated." he points out what use my way of doing stuff worked "Now, this way is not very optimized as you could see and feel, that way of hitting flatly is more used for finishing touches and mostly to straighten out pieces of work. Give the hammer here." he took it and the hit the bar at an odd angle "This is how you draw out the metal, by hitting with the edges of the hammer, the edges work as you are pinching the dough that is the red hot almost molten metal, and you keep turning ninety degrees so it does not end up flattened by yerself, got it?" I nod at him "Now draw out all the ingots as much as you can, all one hundred pieces, eh?" he said while looking at me, I nod see there are plenty of bars from where I took this one and I put it in the flame and started doing work trying to hit the hammer oblique to the anvil, and it started to get elongated quite quickly.

"Now try hitting the tip from the side of the hammer to the far edge of the anvil." Grandpa said.

Just as I started doing it the material started to flow quite quickly, but it got quite uneven forming different kinds of curves, so I tried to straighten it on the top of the flat part of the anvil and the hammer together and made it smooth quite quickly.

"To save on materials and fuel for the forge, try to use it as much as possible both edges of the anvil and hammer" he said as I started to work at the forge.

We spent the whole morning drawing out metal until lunch when Granny Rir called both of us to eat.

"Hey, Doh, sweetie it's lunch time!" she shouted from the entrance of the forge.

"All righto, chap. Time for a lil' break" said Grandpa Doh.

I was dripping in sweat, drawing out metal is really hard, it was making my right arm numb, I had to change arms hitting the ingot many times to let them rest, so tiring, I only drew out a total of five ingot bars.

I take of the apron and gloves and let the heavy duty clothing from Mr. Guido on, leaving with Grandpa.

When we arrived at the dining room there was a feast on the table.

Holy cow! There is food for 10 people here today!

"Hahahhahahahaha, that is what I was looking towards for, that dumbfounded face that he makes when he gets a scare!" my wife was laughing while pointing at me with Granny Rir chuckling beside her, both close to the kitchen door.

"Uwa? What? Why are you laughing at my face anyway?!" I said while blushing, she was too cute laughing that I couldn't resist that smile.

"Gahahahahahahhahahhaa, it's even worse when he gets shy in front of others!" she laughed harder for some reason "But you can sit here since it you are very handsome!" she was very excited today. I was beat.

"So, Dohdoh how did the sweetheart did today? Is he being smart about it?" she was still chuckling "Do you think he can leave the apprentice level today?" she asked as if it was easy to get out of that tier that fast, is it?

I looked with a big interrogation dot in my face towards Grandpa.

"Well, if he gets upsetting and how to set the forge and how to get his tools right, probably today" he said while scratching his beard "Well, getting out of apprentice is about having the basics down and being able to do any work with a template unassisted." he looks at me as saying 'satisfied?'.

I nod at him and sit down on the table, but I notice that Ti'oh is not here yet, so I decided to ask my wife why she was so uppity.

"So is there any need to celebrate? Why is Nordya so happy, Granny?" I asked while looking at Granny, since honey would probably not answer.

"She finished all this cooking by herself, so she almost finished going through apprentice stage, all that is left is for her to clean the dishes and the table after we're done." Granny says, while my wife suddenly freezes in place, since her weakness in housework was put up in display, I looked at her worried about the dishes.

"This time you have to do it, honey, it is for the baby and also for you." I said while looking at her, she seemed a little better.

"I will do my best..." she said with a miniscule voice.

After that Ti'oh comes in dragging Captain Vermont with him. Jivs and Metania where right behind.

"Now to celebrate this sleepy head Ta becoming my Ta, I brought the other Martial Instructor here with his pupils. Now those are your rivals." he said "Now, give them your salutations." he says as he puts his right fist in form of a claw in front of his left c.h.e.s.t and his left in a closed fist on his back and bows down a little towards Captain where as Captain salutes with Jivs and Metania salute too

I do just as Ti'oh did "This lowly Ta greets Martial Instructor and Captain Vermont and his disciples and soldiers Jivs and Metania."

"At least you know your place! Let's eat!" Ti'oh said while showing all of his teeth. Since there was no space for everybody to sit, we ate while standing, it was really fun talking to everyone for a little while, Jivs and Metania told me not to worry too much about the rivals thing, it's just because Ti'oh and Captain had a long rivalry going on, but they were very good friends. They saved each other lives more than a few times, I was told by both of them.

"Hahahahaha, if this is what rivalry is for then I will gladly become rivals with both of you" I said while smiling, they laughed a little too much after that.

Captain Vermont saw us laughing with each other and then looked at Ti'oh and both nodded their heads. Then Captain went and grabbed the two of them by the back of their shirts collar and dragged them away as lost little kittens.

I waved goodbye at them. I looked at Ti'oh and said "I will match up to them in no time!", he smiled and went towards his room.

"Now it is time for you to match up your smithing skills" Grandpa Doh said.

We left after I kissed my wife goodbye. She was really spooked by the dishes she would have to wash. Work hard! We went to the Forge to finish the learning of upsetting and finishing touches. But first we had to turn on the Forge again, since we doused it before leaving, I just took some flint and oil, put some new coal and striking the flint on metal getting some sparks, just enough to burn the oil and start the coal after that, too. When the coal was burning, I put some more on top of it and used the bellows to feed the flame and make it stronger, raising the temperature.

Nice and ready! I look at Master Doh and he smiles at me. Then I put one of the ingot bars on the flames, while it heats Grandpa explains.

"Now, to upset the metal you hit it flattly in the direction you want to take mass of the ingot of" he said, very easy to do "Just don't use too much force or you risk breaking the bar in other place or where it is heated. And to bend the bar just use any round surface or the edges of the anvil, it depends on how much you want to curve it, upsetting and straightening is advised if you need something done. After that is quenching, you can do it in water, oil or air, since I am still gonna use these, just let it quench on water, just drop it for some time and it's done!" he said excited about the end of some imaginary process, I started working on these bars, bending, upset and quenching, the whole afternoon and I just could make two of these, but I think I got everything down, the basics of smithing something into shape.

After the second bar, Grandpa called me out to the table, as I sat there I was exhausted and sweating buckets from working in the heat for a lot of time, it is really tiring.

Then Granny Rir brought some drinks over as I reach out to grab some of it I take the same as another lady hands, now I notice a spooked, tired, honeyboo, on the other side of the table.

"Hi..." I said not wanting to do anything else, as I let her take the drink.

"Hello..." she brought the drink for herself after responding, I reach for the other one.

I drank and it tasted like a sweetened lemonade with passion fruit, very good and refreshing.

"Gahahhahaa, the very first day and they are moping around already? Gahahahahha, have some sandwiches that Ririr brought, you will feel better." Grandpa Doh said "After the afternoon snacks we are going to the Church and update your slate, since both of you probably have reached Level 10 in apprentice tier and then there will be the Amateur tier available to start too."

We all ate while Grandpa and Granny where talking about how we did in our areas of study today.

"I think that she should be able to start making some great food at their house, getting everything done really quickly if it doesn't depends on fire." she said "But she was really a mess, when I brought the dishes of the party for her to do, when she touched the water she froze for a little bit since it was cold" she started smiling and giggling with the hand on her mouth.

"Gahahahahhahaha, this one was really into it, I had to call him, so he would stop" he said smiling "The only problem is his stamina is still low, because he is low leveled, but he made up for it with willpower and some smart thinking of changing arms and taking small breaks to keep working more." at least I got praised! "But when drawing out metal, he still can't make it straight easily, he has to re-hammer the whole piece quite a bit." And there it goes.

We looked at each other and smiled, thinking it at least went well, since we weren't complete failures.

After a little while of resting, the four of us went to the Eye of the Gods to update our slates, Ti'oh wasn't in his room.

When we got there, we saw Elder Brontus and Kavko with Ti'oh opening the doors.

"Now Ta, let these Elders see how our new warrior is doing!" we went inside and under the Seven Gods statues, thankfully we wouldn't go to the White Room again and after this we would go to have dinner at our house and to sleep a little early today.
