The Talentless Inheritor

Chapter 71 - The Previous Royal Family

Amy and Sebastian brought Sana to the house with constant alert. Amy personally bathed her while the servants went off to buy clothes that fit her.

"This house is so big..."

"Yeah, and you'll be living here too."

"Cool!"

Sana was a curious child. She hadn't been in such a big house before and ran around exploring. Amy accompanied her all the way.

It was only natural that she'd get tired after running around for so long that after they ate, she immediately fell asleep.

After sending Sana to sleep in Amy's room, Amy and Sebastian talked in his room.

"If she's from the remnants of the royal family, she's definitely still being hunted down. Getting her out of the orphanage as soon as possible is the wisest choice."

"But is she really part of that royal family?"

"I don't know... but, her hair and eye colors do match."

The royal family's hair was light green. Though it isn't exactly a rare color, it was still in the minority due to fact that most healers had that color.

"I'll send a letter to father, do you want to send anything back?"

"Then, I'll go and write it."

"Alright."

Amy sat on Sebastian's bed while Sebastian wrote the letter.

"Hey, I've been thinking, what do you think happened to Gilbert?"

Sebastian was the one to ask.

"Gilbert? Well, true to his word, he hasn't bothered me in the least after our last meeting. Last I've heard, he was doing extensive training and hasn't left his house."

"I see..."

"What brought this up all of a sudden?"

"Well, I suppose it's alright to tell you."

Sebastian explained the situation in the House of Sol and about his aunt.

"Your aunt pressured you to make me marry Gilbert?"

Amy frowned. The matter was already over but it was still disturbing.

"What would she stand to gain from it? The House of Sol wouldn't get stronger from the union between the House of Luna and the Walt House, they'd only get weaker."

"That's what's been bugging me for so long."

Amy frowned.

"It's either... your aunt has a backer in the Walt House that would help her faction gain control of the House of Sol or... there's a much greater power behind her."

She would benefit by weakening the strongest house for the greater power behind her.

"Sebastian, have you heard from father about the true reason behind this trip abroad?"

"Yes."

"Do you think that this is related as well?"

"Might be."

"If so, then I have to report this to father as well."

"Here's my letters. To my mother, my aide, and this one, just tell them to leave this letter on my desk."

"Got it."

Amy took the letters and left the room. Normally, she would use pigeons that could find their way back as fast as the airship but it was an important letter. Although it cost a lot, she was going to use a teleportation service to teleport the letters to her father tomorrow.

"Now then..."

Sebastian sent a letter to the Blue Rose. One of the members would take the letter from his desk and deliver it to Wisteria, he had no doubts that it would be delivered and he wasn't worried that it would be read by others before then.

Sebastian completed the mission given to him by Blue Rose and even found Sana who was a potential healer. Unfortunately, he couldn't just base it on chance. He had to make sure Sana was a healer lest he regret not meeting any.

At that moment, Sebastian felt a gaze through the window and threw his pen. It broke through the window and nearly hit a bird.

"...strange."

It was a bird but he could feel its watchful gaze.

"Sebastian?! What happened?!"

Amy burst through the door and yelled.

"I felt someone watching me but it was just a bird."

"A bird?"

Amy frowned and looked through the broken window.

"It couldn't be a summoner, could it?"

"Can a summoner watch through a bird's eyes?"

"Yes, it's one of their specialties."

"Then, we have to be on full alert."

Amy and Sebastian decided to minimize their sleep at night and stayed half awake. Sebastian was used to staying awake for several days so it wasn't much of a problem for him.

'Are they here for Sana?'

If they were, then it was going to be a problem. Sebastian took his spear and placed it near his bedside and covered the window with a curtain.

There weren't any attacks this night.

...

"What should we do?"

"She should be safe in the mansion as long as she doesn't go outside."

"But, aren't there only servants guarding this place?"

"I requested more guards last night. I'll go and talk to Sana before we leave."

"Got it."

Sebastian had weapons on his person. If they wanted to get to Sana, they had to go through him and Amy. There's also the possibility of them being attacked in the school and though it's low, it isn't zero.

"Good morning."

"Morning."

Mary and Sebastian greeted each other in the hall and walked into class.

"Hey, why didn't you go to the masquerade?"

"Ah? I did. I just wasn't able to find the two of you. Sorry."

Though that was a lie.

"Eh... Well, we enjoyed ourselves anyway."

"That's good."

The two of them remained silent until they reached their seats.

"Hey, did you two study for the test?"

Elliot asked as they arrived.

"Of course, it's an important test after all."

With Mary's answer finished, Elliot turned to look at Sebastian.

"No, not really."

"Eh... Well, I guess your final grades here don't really matter."

'They actually do, but I'll just keep that to myself.'

Sebastian sat down and got ready for the test. He didn't need to reread any material like everyone in the room was.

The professor arrived and distributed the papers. After his warnings, he signaled for everyone to begin answering.

'How long has it been since I last took a test?'

Definitely a while. With everything that happened in the city after Gilbert's challenge, he had no time for school. With his record, he wouldn't fail so long as he aced his final examinations.

Sebastian took a deep breath and picked up his pen. He took around a minute to stare into empty space and reminisce of the past.

'I used to enjoy tests.'

They showed the fruit of his efforts.

'But, they're worthless to me now.'

Sebastian began writing. He didn't even need to finish reading a question to give an answer.

Mary, Elliot, and several other students looked in his direction in confusion after hearing his pen moving so fast but quickly turned their attention back.

He must've given up, they thought.

'That's finished.'

"Professor?"

"Yes?"

The professor looked at Sebastian who raised his hand. It had been less than ten minutes since the test started.

"Going to the restroom isn't allowed during the test."

"I just wanted to ask if we could pass our papers early."

"?"

"""???"""

The professor and everyone looked at him strangely.

"Well, yes, but I think you shouldn't rush and check your answers a few times..."

"I'm good."

Sebastian stood up, gave the professor his paper, and walked out.

The class stared at the closed door dumbfounded.

...

That test was going to take up the whole first period but since Sebastian finished early, he had around four hours of break.

"Guess I'll go see how Amy's doing. I heard they were doing spars with skills."

It was definitely more interesting than sparring with just wooden weapons.

Sebastian didn't need to go far, he saw Amy and her class in the field. She was dominating her opponent with basic skills.

"Well, it's not like I was expecting anything different."

Sebastian walked into the field and near the weapon racks where Amy's classmates were seated on the floor.

Because he was a transfer student, he had a relatively free schedule and could sit in some classes like this.

Amy's classmates looked at him strangely and turned back to look at the battles. They weren't familiar with him but they had heard of rumors about the black haired transfer student and averted their eyes.

At that moment, Sebastian stood up and walked to the weapon racks. He took one of the bows for practice and then loaded an arrow. Without missing a beat or garnering any looks, he fired the arrow into the distance.

Once he saw the arrow hit its mark, Sebastian put the bow back and sat back in his previous spot.

Coincidentally, Amy's battle had just finished. She spotted Sebastian and walked over to him.

"Good work out there."

"Why are you here?"

"I finished the test early."

"Eh, well, it's you we're talking about after all."

Amy giggled and sat next to him. Her classmates sent the two of them glances but neither of them paid any heed.

She lowered her voice and whispered.

"By the way, your archery sure has improved."

"You noticed?"

"Nn. I saw him earlier but he wasn't doing anything. I planned to deal with him after my match but you did it for me."

"It's the husband's job to protect his wife."

"What wife?"

Amy giggled again and hugged Sebastian's arm.

"Do you think Sana's okay?"

"If everyone pursuing her is at the level of that stalker, then yeah."

The stalker that Sebastian talked about couldn't even dodge the arrow for practice and it ended up lodged in his shoulder. Sebastian could've killed him but it wouldn't be good if the corpse were to be discovered, it was an open field after all.

"When do you think we'll get married?"

Sebastian twitched.

"M-married?"

"Of course, silly. You don't expect to make me stay your fiancee forever, do you?"

In society's eyes, the two of them were already a.d.u.l.ts. Sebastian and Amy are both sixteen but Amy was born a few months earlier.

Typically, marriages could even happen as early as then for nobles and 『Inheritors』. Of course, that isn't really the case for everyone.

"I think when we're eighteen is good."

"About two years, huh..."

Amy didn't want to rush their relationship. She had waited for sixteen long years, she could wait for a few more.

Sebastian looked to the sky and dwelled in his thoughts. What would happen during those two years?

In just half a year, he had faced many things. It was hard to imagine what was in store for him during those two years.

"Sounds good."

"Mmm."

Once Sebastian voiced his agreement, Amy snuggled up to him. Her classmates had long since avoided to look at them.

The couple was flirting in public with their energy pouring out of their bodies. Nobody dared talk or look at them.
