The Talentless Inheritor

Chapter 1 - The Talentless Inheritor (Prologue)

Aurora Academy, one of the special schools that house 『Inheritors』, special people that are born from a lineage that traces back to a 『Primogenitor』, a person that is personally granted an ability bestowed by God.

These 『Primogenitors』 hold power unlike anyone has ever seen, legends spoke that they can decimate mountains with a wave of their hands or create a lake from nothing.

Unfortunately, because the God who grant these powers hasn't shown itself in countless years, there haven't been any cases of a new 『Primogenitor』 and there are none of them that are still alive.

『Inheritors』 or the successors of these 『Primogenitors』 hold an inferior version of their power but compared to the common man, they are still like gods.

Although these special schools admit those who have inherited the blood of these lineages, there is one student with the blood of his forefathers yet no potential to use his abilities.

Sebastian Sol, the only inept student recorded in history. He was admitted to the school as he was the second son of the House of Sol, a house with a lineage of fire.

The House of Sol had people who were able to kindle flame from nothing and set battlefields ablaze were one of the kingdom's most treasured families.

Naturally, they had put a lot of expectations on the second son of the house head, though he was born of a mistress, nobody dared slander him or at least not until he was branded as inept.

At a remote corner of the school, three students surrounded a boy with black hair and eyes. The boy that was surrounded had blood dripping from his lip and the student who had punched him had a mocking smile on his face.

"What's wrong? You're from the House of Sol but you can't even stand up to us? Your hair isn't even the same color as your family!" The attacker mocked the injured boy.

"Please... just let me go, I'll give you the money," The boy pleaded.

"Hahaha! The second son, Sebastian Sol is actually begging for mercy!"

Sebastian's plea just elicited another mocking response but he still searched through his pockets then held out his hand that had the money.

"Two hundred Aur, that's all I have, please let me go..." Sebastian tried moving away but as soon as he did, the student who had attacked him just raised his fist.

"You there, stop!" A voice called out from behind the three students.

"It's her!" The chubby one of the three students yelled out causing the skinny one next to him to panic.

"Tsk. You've gotten lucky this time, always hiding behind the student council president," the student who had attacked him who seemed like the leader of the three took the money and left.

The girl with black hair that had just arrived and wanted to stop them but instead went over to Sebastian to check on his wounds.

"Sebastian, are you okay? How could they do something like this?!" The girl asked Sebastian worriedly while wiping the blood on his lip with a handkerchief that she had brought out from her b.r.e.a.s.t pocket.

"I'm okay Amy, your handkerchief will be dirtied, I can just wipe it off," Sebastian tried to stop her but she dodged his hand and continued wiping.

"Silly," Amy smiled. "the purpose of a handkerchief is to wipe away things like this, what use is keeping it clean? Besides, it may get infected if you wipe it off, your gloves have come in contact with the floor."

Sebastian stopped resisting after her sound argument and only spoke once she retracted her hand.

"You don't have to save me in matters like these, you're busy enough as you are," Sebastian told her.

In response, Amy flicked his forehead, pouted and said, "we're childhood friends, we've got to look out for each other."

Sebastian smiled lightly and said, "that's why I'm telling you to stop worrying about me, I don't want you getting hurt."

Amy raised her hand and on her hand was a sphere of light.

"Who would be able to hurt me? Just shut your mouth and allow me to worry about you, they took your money so you must haven't eaten yet, I'll treat you," Amy said while pulling on Sebastian's hand.

The two of them walked for a few minutes and during that time, Sebastian had willingly allowed her to pull him. Still, people only gave them a glance before going back to what they were doing, this was a common sight.

"The president really shouldn't be associating with that inept."

"If only she let him be, she'd be the perfect president..."

Many of the students they passed through whispered but such comments went over Amy's head. For her, Sebastian was more important than what the public thought about her.

But Sebastian was different, he's worried because if Amy were to attract disp.l.e.a.s.u.r.e then she may be forced out of her role despite originating from the House of Luna.

Amira Luna, the student council president of Aurora Academy, no small amount of students revere her not only for her caring personality and capabilities in managing the school, but she also holds the highest latent potential among the students.

The House of Luna is a house comparable to the Sol, they've been associated for centuries and because of that, Sebastian and Amy grew up with each other and were also sent to school at around the same time.

That was both a blessing and a disaster. Amira's talent was at the peak but she enrolled with the talentless, Sebastian. Naturally, this sparked controversy.

The combined power of the Houses of Sol and Luna were able to quell them but word of Sebastian's talentless disposition was still spread.

Since then, the House of Sol has practically disowned Sebastian, only providing him funds for everyday life. The House of Luna adopted the same attitude towards him but Amy alone associated with him and never abandoned him.

Sebastian clenched his other fist as Amy led him into the cafeteria.

"What do you want to eat?" Amy asked while still holding onto Sebastian's hand.

"Then how about the most expensive meal?" Sebastian said jokingly.

"You bully, you don't even eat shrimp," Amy said while glaring at him.

Sebastian turned his eyes towards the menu and sure enough, the most expensive one was a seafood meal costing over seven hundred Aur.

"I'm kidding, I'll take what I always do," Sebastian told her. Amy nodded and began ordering for the two of them.

"Amy, can you let me go now? It's going to be difficult holding the tray with us holding hands." Sebastian teased. Although he really wanted to say, "you holding my hand", he couldn't quite deny that he also held on halfway.

"Ah!" Amy yelped. Only then did she realize that she had been holding Sebastian's hand the entire way here.

She kept her head down with a red flush on her face as the two of them took their trays and sat down at an empty table.

"Let's eat," Sebastian told Amy who was looking down at her tray.

"Nn..."[1] Amy nodded and picked up a spoon and scooped up some soup before putting it in her mouth slowly.

Although Sebastian wanted to talk with her, she kept her head down and just decided to talk with her after their meal. He didn't have any clue as to why she kept her head lowered.

Their meal finished without any disturbances.

"Thanks for the meal," Sebastian told Amy who had raised her head slightly.

"It's nothing, I can treat you every day if you want," Amy managed to let out her words.

"No, that would be just me leeching off of you, I want to become independent and when that day comes, I'll be the one to take care of you so I can't be like this forever," Sebastian declared but just as he finished, he realized that his words held a different meaning.

Fl.u.s.tered, he quickly tried to explain but Amy's face caused his words to get stuck in his throat. Amy had a bright smile on her flushed face as she twirled the tips of her hair around her finger. Although her eyes didn't meet Sebastian's, he was able to see her face clearly

"So you'll take care of me..." Amy muttered in a daze. Sebastian swallowed his words, bid Amy goodbye and took their trays back to the canteen without so much as waiting for a reply.

Once he left the canteen, he covered the lower half of his face with his forearm while speeding away. "If she makes that face, I'll lose my self-control," Sebastian whispered to himself as he headed for his next class.

As soon as he stepped into his classroom, the room fell into silence. Each of his steps was heard clearly as he walked to his desk. The eyes of the students in the room were glued to him and once he sat down, they began whispering.

"He still tries attending class? What use is there for an inept like him?"

"Yeah, no matter how good he is in theory, he's still useless in the end."

Sebastian, knowing that he isn't able to inherit any abilities, devoted himself to studying. He's retained to have the first place title in academics for the two consecutive years that he's been in the academy.

Although this was a school for 『Inheritors』, they were still required to learn science and the like. Practical tests didn't have any huge impact on grades because the students had varying abilities depending on their house.

"Oi, inept, why bother attending class?" A student sat on Sebastian's desk and asked in an aggressive tone.

"...please leave me alone Brandon," Sebastian told Brandon.

"You think you can order me around?" Brandon grabbed Sebastian's collar and raised him up slightly.

"No..." Sebastian uttered. "Then why did you tell me to leave you alone? That's ordering me around!" Brandon stood up from the chair and was just about to hit Sebastian who closed his eyes but the door opened again and a professor stepped through.

Brandon glanced at the teacher, then at Sebastian, "you're lucky," he spat out in disdain while moving back to his seat. Although the teacher saw the scene clearly, he continued on as if it never happened.

In this world, power is everything. Those who don't have power can only cower beneath those who do, hoping that they won't be seen and one such person is the talentless, Sebastian Sol, the second son of the House of Sol.
