Chapter 38 Ol’ Tom

Leo took two steps back and dodged the incoming woman. He pulled out a five dollars note and waved it in front of the woman.

“I’m not interested in you. I’ve heard there is someone here who helps others make legal identification. If you tell me who I should find, this five dollars is yours.” Leo said to the woman.

The woman let out a coquettish smile after listening. She reached out for the five dollars before tucking it into her chest.

She gently said, “I happen to know this. This five dollars really is earned effortlessly. You can go to Pure Love Bar in the center of Mingde Street and find a man called Ol’ Tom on the second floor. He knows how to make an identification. However, good-looking, remember to pay attention to your safety!”

Leo did not say anything as he turned around and left with Bucky. The woman followed the two out of the alley in a leisurely manner.

When leaving the alley, there was a bar named Peach on the right side of the alley entrance.

“These two good-looking, you really don’t want to come in and play? I have many sisters here with all kinds of styles!”

Leo swept back and saw the woman leaning on Peach’s entrance. She was waving at him and Bucky with half of her head popping out.

Leo ignored her and headed towards the center of Mingde Street.

The woman saw Leo and Bucky walking away. She shook her head in disappointment while entering the bar.

At that moment, a strong black man greeted her and asked, “Boss, are you alright? I heard you screaming just now. But when I saw Shadeed run away and you hooked up with another two strangers, I didn’t venture over.”

“I’m fine, Shadeed owes me fifty dollars and a right hand. Remember tomorrow go and collect the debt.”

“Boss, you should stop accepting jobs outside. It’s too dangerous.”

“This lady likes it, what can you do?”

……

Leo led Bucky towards the Pure Love Bar in the center of the street.

Just as they entered, two sultry girls came up. As they were about to hug Leo’s shoulder but Leo dodged it.

“I’m looking for Ol’ Tom, not to have fun,” Leo said.

The two girls left in disappointment while a burly man in a suit who was standing by the entrance came over. The burly man asked with a deep voice, “Brother, which gang are you from? Why are you looking for Ol’ Tom?”

“A man from the mob. I’m here to talk business with Ol’ Tom.”

The burly could not figure out Leo’s real background since Leo answered casually. So his momentum became weaker a bit.

He was a guard and did not have much authority. Thus, he led Leo and Bucky through a hallway and up a long staircase to the bar’s second floor.

The second floor was much quieter than the first. There were not many people and the music was gentler.

Just as they reached the second floor, a man that looked more ferocious came up and asked the burly man, “Bobby, what do these two want?”

“Brother Barno, they say they’re here to talk business with Ol’ Tom.”

“The people from the opposite bar didn’t notice them entering, right?”

“I’m not sure but these two are new faces. There’s a high chance of them noticing. But they probably aren’t sure whether these two are here for fun or not.”

Barno nodded and let Bobby return to the first floor to guard the entrance. Barno sized up Leo and Bucky and asked, “You are looking for Ol’ Tom, for what business?”

Leo was confused about why they were vigilant against the people from the opposite bar. However, this did not matter to him so he did not ask anything to avoid trouble.

Thus, Leo answered, “I was introduced to Ol’ Tom and prepared to apply for two legal identifications.”

“You know the rules?”

“I’m not sure. But you can tell me.”

“Man or woman, old or young, 10000 dollars each. Pay 1000 dollars as a deposit first and the balance will be paid after it’s done. And, don’t spread the word afterward.”

Leo nodded indicating he understood. Barno saw two of them had no slightest difficulties and knew they were not short of money. He immediately continued, “Then, please follow me. I’ll bring you to meet Ol’ Tom.”

Barno led the way and reached the end of a hallway. He pushed open the door with his right hand and took a glance. He loudly shouted, “Ol’ Tom, get down from Polly. The moneybags for your next month’s squandering are here. Hurry up and start working! I don’t even know how many lifetimes of blessings have you cultivated. You actually can make legal identification through social climbing. Just lay down in your home to make money and don’t have to be afraid of getting shot at.”

A half-naked mixed-blood woman came out of the room with a coat draped over her while giggling. She gave Barno a flying kiss while at it.

When she saw Leo and Bucky who were behind, she gave another two flying kisses. Then she headed towards the lobby giggling.

Barno shook his head gesturing for Leo and Bucky to enter the room. Then he closed the door and left.

The colored light in the room was warm in tone and brightly lit. A man was standing in front of the sofa while wearing his pants. The man probably was Ol’ Tom.

“It’s shameful for both of you to see. Feel free to sit down, I’ll be ready soon.”

Leo carefully sized up Ol’ Tom. Ol’ Tom was not old, just a little over forty. However, he looked lethargic, probably due to excessive drinking.

Within a few moments, Ol’ Tom had tidied his shirts and washed his hands. He wiped with the towel while saying, “Just now Barno had told you the price, right?”

Leo nodded. Barno continued, “Since you have no problems with the price, I’ll tell you the status of the identity I made. The identity I made can only be both parents who passed away and an orphan that grew up in an orphanage. You can pick your age between 18 to 24 and the birthplace can only be Manhattan, New York. The identification includes two things, a social security card, and a driver’s license.”

Leo nodded again and lightly said, “No problem.”

Thus, Ol’ Tom began his work. He led the two of them to a separate compartment and took their photo with a camera. Then, he gave Leo and Bucky a simple form each.

They only needed to fill in their name and age. Leo naturally filled Leo Erwin, age 20 while Bucky had no intention of changing his name as he filled Bucky Barnes, age 24.

Afterward, Leo took out his thick wallet and pulled twenty pieces of one hundred dollar notes out and gave Ol’ Tom while saying, “I know one hundred dollar notes are not hard to spend here, but it should be no problem for you guys to spend them.”

Ol’ Tom frowned slightly as he instantly took the notes in Leo’s hand. After a closer look, he heaved out a sigh of relief as it was not consecutively numbered. He relaxed his brows and said with a smile, “These small amounts are certainly no problem. You can go back and wait for the news. Come back here after seven days for the final payment, by then all the paperwork will be done.”

Leo stood up and shook Ol’ Tom’s hand. He secretly sighed as the order of the gang here still seemed alright! It was not as dark and messy as Leo thought.

Since the matter was settled, Leo was preparing to leave with Bucky. Suddenly, he acutely sensed there was a commotion in the hallway. Dozens of people were rushing towards Ol’ Tom.

Bucky also noticed the unusual movements. He and Leo looked at each other before stepping a few steps away from the door.
