The Knowledge I Live With

Chapter 4 - The busy market day

It has been a year and two months cense I was born into this world. My life here hasn't changed much. All that has really changed is that I can now move around on my own and even run a little. My mother also feeds me real food. Also my mother takes me to the market daily now. I think she does that to get any kind of free food or sales on anything. I can see that it is really hard on her. She has to carry me around, because my small body gets tired very easily. Today I am going to change that. Well… I can't help our family with money... But I can still try and walk on my own! Maby I can even help my mother with carrying.

"Lin are you ready to go?" My mother asks me as we are stepping out of the house.

"Yeah. Bye bye house!" I say happily. My mother loves seeing me act childish like this so I do it to make her smile.

"Okay, get on my back and we can get going." Mother says.

"No! Imma walk on my own." I say.

"On your own? I don't think that you'll be able to do that." Mother says. She smiles at me and tries to make me get on her back, but in the end I just take her hand and we walk together. At first everything was fine, but as we got closer to the market my little body started getting tired. It wasn't because of how long we had walked for, it was because of how many people there were. I honestly felt like the towns population had doubled in one day.

"Oh no, I guess today the market will be full." My mother says. She has a worried expression on her face and she looks around for something. Suddenly she pulls my arm towards a small shop were an older lady and a young man were selling things.

"Excuse me." My mother acks. "Would it be possible for you to look after my child while I am shopping? I don't have any place where to put her and I can't just leave her alone. I can even pay you if the price isn't too high."

"I can look after her." The older lady says.

"Thank you a million times! I will be back as soon as I can!" My mother says. She pushes me to introduce myself and then hurried to the market.

"I'm Lin..." I say. i don't really know what to do. There isn't much I need to say and now that mother's gone I don't need to be all cute.

"Lin. That is a beautiful name!" The old woman says. "You can just call me grandma and this is my son Lars." She says and points at the man. He doesn't say anything and just quietly nods. I look around me a little to see something I can play with. I didn't bring any of my toys so I was left with nothing to do.

"Would you like to hear a story?" Grandma asks. I nod little shily. Then grandma takes something from the table. I don't think I can believe my eyes. It's a book. This is the first time for me to see a book here. It doesn't look that old and looks like a story book.

"These don't really sell well, because they are so expensive. Not that many people can actually even read." Grandma says.

"Can I read?" I ask. Only after saying it I notice how stupid that question was.

"I don't think that you can read, but I can teach you how to read if you want me to." Grandma says.

"Yes. I want to read too!" I say excitedly.
