71. The Nice Officer Kong

Translator: Iris Guo

Kong Wenjie hadn’t said a word until the donkey cart reached the foot of the mountain.

“Officer Kong, thank you so much for today!” said A’Chou hurriedly, “This is a bumpy mountain road, and it’s not an easy ride. You could just drop me here, and I’ll walk back.”

Kong Wenjie ignored A’Chou, whipped the donkey, and the cart went uphill.

“Officer Kong, it’s fine, really. I can manage it. It’s not that far.” A’Chou hastened to suggest. She didn’t feel flattered but terrified. He was so abnormally kind to her today that she couldn’t figure out his plan.

It seemed like A’Chou had seen a ghost. Kong Wenjie glanced at her frightened face, compressed his lips indifferently, looked away, and continued to drive the cart.

A’Chou became even more scared and didn’t know where to put her hands. She tried to figure out what Kong Wenjie wanted while rubbing her hands. She was just a maid, so she wouldn’t be worth it. Therefore, he might be targeting Zhong Mingwei.

A’Chou’s heart suddenly jolted.

“Officer Kong, I know how busy you are, so you could drop me here. I’ll just walk back, seriously, and you could get back to work.” said A’Chou with a smile. She tried to calm down, but she was overwhelmed with anxiety.

Kong Wenjie frowned impatiently: “The deck chair is very heavy. How can you carry it back without the cart?”

A’Chou was startled immediately: “Officer Kong, you…you will give me this chair?”

Kong Wenjie glanced at A’Chou again. It seemed that he was saying “What do you think”.

A’Chou was so surprised that she hastened to take out three qian of silver ingots from her wallet. She thought for a while, gritted her teeth, took one more qian of silver ingots, and put the money in front of Kong Wenjie: “Officer Kong, I really appreciate it. This is the money for the chair, and I need to pay for the donkey cart.”

Kong Wenjie looked at the money in A’Chou’s palm and snorted sarcastically: “I didn’t know you are a big spender. Why did you bargain with the shopkeeper then?”

A’Chou got a little embarrassed, lowered her head, and whispered: “He did overcharge me, and I’m not stupid…”

“Put it away.” said Kong Wenjie while darting a look at A’Chou. “Make out that I already took your money.”

A’Chou didn’t understand Kong Wenjie, so she asked cautiously: “What did you mean?”

“Before we left for NingGuTa, didn’t Duan Chenghong give my brother and me ten liang of silver ingots?” Kong Wenjie frowned harder and whipped the donkey impatiently, “Go! Go! Go!”

A’Chou didn’t decline again and put her money back in the wallet. She felt ill at ease and forced a smile: “Officer Kong, it’s so kind of you.”

Kong Wenjie didn’t seem to hear what A’Chou said. He totally ignored her and smoothly drove the donkey cart to the courtyard on the hillside.

When the cart pulled over, A’Chou stepped down. At that time, Kong Wenjie already carried the deck chair on his shoulder and headed for the courtyard. She didn’t offer to help him but hurriedly ran over to open the door. Then, she stood aside to let him come in.

“All right. Officer Kong, you could just leave it here.” A’Chou led him into the main hall.

Kong Wenjie placed the chair down, looked around the room, which was shabby but clean, and his eyes were fixed on the door to the chamber.

A’Chou‘s heart thumped so fast that she was fearful that Kong Wenjie would push the door open. Zhong Mingwei was inside, and he might have wetted his bed. If others saw his biggest weakness, his high self-esteem would be hurt.

Therefore, A’Chou hastened to walk over and deliberately stood in front of the door: “Officer Kong, thank you so much for today. Well, it’s getting late. I don’t want to waste your time, so I won’t keep you.”
