6. The Accident

Translator: Iris Guo

First, the guards scolded Duan Rulan several times, and there was one time when the guard with dark skin almost hit her. However, she threatened to kill herself and it seemed that she was ready to risk everything, so the guards got fed up with her drama and had to let her stay in the room alone.

Nevertheless, there was no chance that A’Chou could stay in the guest room. The guards ordered her to spend the night in the woodshed. It was not like she never stayed in a woodshed before, so she didn’t complain and always slept in woodsheds of hostels along the way from the capital to Tongliao. Unfortunately, the woodshed of the local hostel in Tongliao had been occupied, so were the wide beds for a number of people to sleep in, and only a few main rooms were available. The guards had no alternative but to book a room for A’Chou. It was the very first time for her to sleep in a guest room. Duan Rulan stayed in the room next to hers.

A’Chou was finally able to take a hot bath and sleep in the soft bedding. It seemed fantastic even to think about it. As soon as she entered the guest room, A’Chou went straight to the big bed with carvings and rolled on it. It felt so amazing and she couldn’t get out of the bed at all and decided to skip the hot bath. She just fell asleep with the clothes on.

On the next day, A’Chou was awakened by the anxious knocks on her door, which were mixed with a man’s rude curses. She jumped off the bed, rearranged her clothes, combed her messy hair with fingers, and rushed to the door. It turned out as expected that the guard with dark skin was standing in front of her door impatiently, and his face seemed gloomier: “You freaking slut! You lived in the main room once, so what? You are the master now? I should attend to you and wake you up?”

“Sorry Officer, I’m so sorry! Please calm down. I will boil some water for you to wash your face right away!” A’Chou hastened to bow unctuously like a spineless slave. It was not her fault at all. Having been a maid ever since she could remember things, every time she met someone, even a nobody, she would flatter him subconsciously. Anyway, although this ugly guard was mean when he spoke, A’Chou found him kinder than the pale guard who was always fickle.

“Go wake up the Miss first!” The guard ran out of his patience. While he walked back to his room, he kept cursing, “People say that a man who loses position and influence may be subjected to much indignity. Little bitch! How dare she put on freaking airs in front of me! Every day I have to beg you several times to get out of the bed. Who do you think you are?”

A’Chou rushed to knock on Duan Rulan’s door but there was no response for a moment. A’Chou had no choice but to shout out, “Miss! Miss! You up yet?”

After a while, it was still dead silent in the room. A’Chou had an inkling that something bad might happened. She slapped the door and shouted louder: “Miss! Miss! Please open the door! ”

“What the hell? Somebody died? ” The guards couldn’t stand the noise she made anymore and rushed out of their room with sullen faces.

“Officer! Officer! The Miss never responded!” This time A’Chou really panicked and didn’t have the time to be afraid. She pulled the arms of the guard with dark skin and said anxiously, “Officer, would you please ask the owner to open the door?”

The guards also panicked immediately. The Emperor ordered them to escort Duan Rulan to NingGuTa. If anything happened to her, they were the ones to blame, and they might be condemned.
