Chick of the Beast Family

The air inside the Northern Duke’s Castle, which originally cold, froze even more.

My father, and the owner of this Castle, ‘Matheus von Mont’, was the cause of the cold.

He couldn’t resist his temper and was on the verge of explosion, growling at his maids and attendants.

“Say it again. My daughter’s spirit… is what?”

The body of the poor maids and servants trembled because of fear.

A war-maniac, monster duke, the devil of the north… A man labelled with those vicious nicknames terrifyingly asked for an answer.

“Lady Lena’s companion spirit… that is…”

“Stop idling and answer me!”

“It’s a chick, Sir!”

Startled by the Duke’s growl, one of the servants answered in surprise. Then he crouched his shoulder as if he had expected the Duke would make an angry shout again.

However, the Duke didn’t shout, but rather laughed as if he had lost his temper.

“Hahaha… My daughter… The companion spirit of this daughter of mine, who rules the North, is not an eagle nor a hawk, but a chick.”

At the same time as his voice was lowering, the room temperature was also gradually decreasing.

It was because of the spirit growling next to him, the “December Ice Wolf”. Since I’ve already experienced this many times, I sighed instead of being surprised.

‘It’s about to start again, his raged mode I mean.’

All people of Kirsch Empire possess one animal-type “companion spirit”.

They were usually more reliable than anyone else, but they weren’t always helpful.

Since they are connected to people by souls, when the emotion of their master became intense, they are affected and will eventually run wild. It was often called as ‘raged mode’ but officially, it is called ‘berserker state’.

Growl.

In any case, the wolf spirit, who was in raged mode, displayed its ability to deal with the cold, turning this place into a freezer.

I always wanted to see it happen, but after seeing it in real life, late regret tormented me.

“Tsk. If only I didn’t open the text file back then…”

It was exactly six months ago that my life became so precarious as a piece of thin ice.

Six months ago, I was just an ordinary college student when I received a mail with a text file attached, entitled as << The World Once Destroyed >>.

I was planning to ignore it but because I’m curious, I decided to open it.

‘Is this a romantic fantasy novel?’

As expected, it was really a romance-fantasy novel set in the middle age and medieval times of the West.

Magic, Spirits, and Gods… A novel that makes you dream of all sorts of mysterious beings. I usually enjoy reading books with the same genre, so when I came to my senses, I already reading the content attentively.

‘Oh no! I still have a part-time tomorrow! I have to sleep now!’

The novel was very entertaining that I couldn’t stop reading it. It was so irresistible that I even stayed up all night just to read it.

Because everything in the story touched my heart. I also liked the main characters, Tara and Lucas, and also the unique worldview setting that people has once companion spirit in the form of an animal.

The surprising thing was, I was so absorbed that I’m already reaching the story’s end.

‘Why do all characters die?’

As the story progressed, the characters I like died over and over again. I sped up to check the ending, and finally read the last sentence.

‘Is this why its title was << The World Once Destroyed >>?’

The novel ends with the main characters’ death and the destruction of the world. Thinking about it now, it makes sense.

Of course, wouldn’t the content of the book follow its title? So I can understand why the ending is like that.

But understanding and accepting are two different things.

‘What’s this…’

I felt betrayed.

I don’t want this.

I wanted to see a happy ending for the main characters.

‘If everyone died anyways, then Lena killed herself in vain!’

Lena von Mont.

When she appeared, she was just a stupid villain. Despite the warnings of her friend, Tara, regarding Adrian… she still fell in love with him and resort on doing bad things.

But atleast in the last moment, she did not remain such a pathetic villain.

‘She even killed herself with poison in front of Ed just to hide Tara.’

In the ends, she sacrificed her life to end things right.

To die in front of him must have been the last struggle to stop him from becoming more and more depraved. But Ed, for some reasons, has become even more mad after her death.

As if possessed by the devil, he destroyed the world in such state.

Was he angry at Lena for ignoring his orders and committing suicide? His feelings are unknown because they’re not detailed in the novel.

Anyway, one thing is for sure.

‘It’s so pathetic.’

Lena, who bears the coldness of her family ever since she was born, died without being loved until the very end.

I couldn’t even let go of my cellphone, staring blankly, and leaving the file open.

Whi-ing. Whi-ing.

I snap back to my senses after hearing the vibration of the notification that a new mail has arrived. An unidentified text file was sent in my mailbox, so I immediately checked it.

「The World Once Destroyed— Reboot」

Now that I think about it, it was a very suspicious file name. But, drawn by my own curiosity, I opened it right away without even having time to think about it.

After that, a bright light coming from my cellphone enveloped my sight.

‘What, what?!’

Because the light was too strong, I thought I would lose my eyesight if I open my eyes carelessly so I decided to close it for a while.

When I opened my eyes again, a woman in a maid outfit was reprimanding me.

“Lady Lena! It’s morning! Come on, wake up! You must practice hard today and succeed in summoning spirits!”

In short, I came to the world inside the novel of << The World Once Destroyed >>, possessing ‘Lena’, the pathetic villain whom I had so much pity for.

I recalled everything happened, and a laughter broke out of my mouth.

‘Aren’t I lucky? If I had been forced to live happily, I would shed blood and tears, but I wasn’t.’

In my original world, I didn’t have a family in the first place.

I have never seen my father since I was born and my mother disappeared after leaving me, a young child, to my grandmother. Last year, my maternal grandmother passed away, so I was barely making a living by myself in a small studio.

So when I transmigrated into a novel, I wasn’t very upset.

Above all, Lena is very good-looking as she is a significant character of the novel. Whether it’s her pure white skin, or her rare pink color hair that comes from her mother, the Duchess… In any case, she has good genetics so I’m really not unhappy when I arrived here.

“Since I am already here, shouldn’t I work hard?  I’ll run a business as a Duke’s daughter and I’ll save Ed too! I’m going to live well and protect world peace!”

… I was burning with enthusiasm.

However, there was one thing I’m having a hard time to accept.

It was the man right in front of me.

‘I think my life would’ve been happy if this man wasn’t my father.’

The Duke is still making a fuss saying that my companion spirit is disappointing.

In order to calm him down, the sound of the Duke’s servants was buzzing in his ear.

“Sir, you have to calm down now!”

“The window! The window is frozen!”

“Please calm down! Otherwise, everything will freeze just like the other time!”

Despite their efforts, the Duke could not calm his anger, and his wolf became more and more violent instead.

Soon, the glass window cracked because it could not withstand the coldness emitted by the wolf anymore.

As a result, the pouring water froze in the middle of the bedroom, forming an ice sheet, and the surface of the expensive ornaments were also frosted.

At that point, I had no choice but to be worried.

‘He will end up killing a person…!!’

A similar thing has happened in the past when the Duke was furious after receiving a letter from the Imperial family.

I remembered that icicles formed all over the castle that caused a huge accident. So it’s not an exaggeration that he might really kill someone.

‘Tsk, do I already have to take out my hidden card?’

As his daughter… No, I felt the sense of responsibility as someone who possess his daughter, so I will stop the Duke.

“Father.”

“……?”

The cold wind that was raging immediately stopped.

He seemed a little surprised.

Before I transmigrated, the original Lena won’t dare to talk because she was afraid of him.

He stared at me for a while, then asked.

“……What.”

His face was looking at me as if I just started a fight with him.

He’s really handsome, although he’s angry right now.

He has a shining silver hair, and bright blue eyes. It’s such a waste that such appearance was meant for this cruel father to have.

But of course, it won’t end well to me if I say that out loud.

“I have something to tell you. First of all, I want you to dismiss the servants.”

The Duke’s gaze was cold. His wolf spirit also sent a cold gaze at her while flaunting its silver fur.

So I was very nervous…

“All of you may go out. Now let’s hear it, what excuse are you trying to make?”

He gladly granted my request.

Meanwhile, the servants and maids were running out of the room until we’re the only ones left.

After taking a deep breath, I opened my mouth.

“I too, understand that you don’t like me.”

“……”

“I was born in exchange for my mother’s life and was even born with a weak body, so I couldn’t summon a spirit on time, and barely do so. But this…”

I held out the little spirit that was sleeping on my hand. It’s a cute yellow cotton ball but unfortunately looks useless.

“I was able to summon this little spirit.”

“Tch. I don’t think you understand the subject.”

His tone just now really makes me want to hit him.

I didn’t have a weak spirit because I wanted to, it’s just because of my poor luck that I was born that way.

I have to calm down first, so I tried to cease my anger.

“I’m sorry…”

“So you’ll just end up saying sorry again? You don’t have a strong spirit and magical power. Tsk, it’s hard to believe that you inherited the blood of me and Lilia.”
“In return, I’m thinking of accepting that ‘arranged marriage’ that my father told me before.”

“……?!”

His face is so shocked as if he has been poured a cold water on the street.

‘He really looked surprised. After all, Lena insist that she would rather die than be a pawn of political marriage.’

Before I possessed Lena, she was quiet and timid in front of the Duke.

She never talks back and yet, she’s really against political marriage.

Enraged that his daughter refused his words, the Duke treated Lena even more coldly and unable of tolerating it anymore, Lena runs away to the battlefield.

Then she met Ed, a villain, and fell in love with him.

‘I don’t want to be like the original Lena.’

I’d rather use the political marriage, than refuse it like she originally did.

“I will leave, as you wish.”

“…… Why did you suddenly change your mind?”

Probably because of my desire to ran away from you plus, the thought of stopping Ed, from destroying this world.

It was the combination of these thought but I don’t necessarily need to tell the truth.

“Because I don’t want my father to suffer anymore. Your daughter who you despise to see, now has a useless weak spirit. So I will leave.”

“……”

“It’s also good for the both of us.”

Oddly enough, the Duke was silent, without any sign of rejoicing.

‘Why don’t you answer me right away? You’ve been telling me about this marriage for so long.’

This is why I put the political marriage as my trump card. If something suddenly happens later on, I’ll just say ‘Forgive me! I just married you by arrangement!’. Then make up for it after I prevent his blackening.

‘Why is he not speaking? He won’t awaken his paternal love now, right?’

I immediately became sarcastic because of the ridiculous imaginations inside my head.

“I get it. If you say so, then proceed with that. Do you have someone in mind?”

“Yes. I thought about it deeply. Someone who might be able to help the family.”

I looked into his eyes and blurted out the name of the man I wanted to marry.

“I think Prince Adrian would be good.”
