Worst Comes to Worst, We’ll Negotiate With the Ghost (1)

The pedestrians passing by set their sights on the woman and child pair, murmuring amongst themselves.

Ding Yi, who was fuming just a second ago, felt bothered by the peoples’ strange glances. And even more strangely, everyone seemed to be talking about them, but none dared to come and talk to them.

Are the people who live here all so neurotic? Why are they looking at her as if they’ve seen a ghost???

Mu Yueshi pulled on Ding Yi’s sleeve, whispering: “Ding Yi, that shopkeeper wasn’t lying.”

Ding Yi shut her eyes and sighed: “Looks to be that way. Wonderful, it looks like there will be no returning that house.”

Mu Yueshi looked at her innocently, saying: “Then let’s not return it.”

Ding Yi’s clouded face seemed to clear up a bit at Mu Yueshi’s words. After seeing how calm he was, Ding Yi’s own anxiety was able to somewhat subside.

After having come to terms with her situation, Ding Yi led Mu Yueshi back to their residence, asking him along the way: “If we keep that house, that ghost might come keep us company in the middle of the night. Aren’t you scared?”

Mu Yueshi shook his head: “I’m not scared.”

And that was the truth: He really felt no fear towards the ghost.

After having heard this, Ding Yi felt a great sense of shame. She cried internally: Of course you aren’t scared, you little demon, but I’m just a scaredy-cat who can’t help but feel fear!

But in the end, they were stuck with that house.

Ding Yi didn’t have much money on hand. She had done some market research and found that her entire life savings wasn’t enough to buy even half a room of a normal house!

Reality was cruel, even the luxury of being afraid costs money.

After feeling the loose silvers* in her pocket, Ding Yi’s hopes of getting a new house were instantly extinguished, her mental state reaching a state of apathy. In her heart, she smiled coolly: Heh, so what if it’s a haunted house? I already spent the money, so I have a right to live there!

*(Loose, inconsistently sized/shaped pieces of silver typically weighing below one Tael)

[Received hidden quest: ‘The Haunted House on West Street’. Congratulations host, you’ve received 100 EXP. Plot advancement +5, target’s dependence +5, courage points +10, received the Skilled Homemaker tag. Please keep up the good work!]

Ding Yi was absolutely speechless at the horrible, opportunistic system’s forceful methods.

After seeing the ghost, I had a feeling things wouldn’t be so easy!

Ding Yi, exhausted, attempted to futilely reason with the system: Boss, hey, let’s have a talk. We’re supposed to be a child development system right? Raising Mu Yueshi and helping the future boss develop a healthy personality is hard enough. Why do we need to go through all these hidden events? Don’t you think it’s a little too hard for a cannon fodder like me?

Don’t try to fool me, this isn’t part of my job!

System replied confidently: Development is only the ultimate goal, the required objective. Side quests are how you get points! There are multiple point value categories which go toward upgrading the system. If the host only depends on the main quest, your comprehensive score will be very low, so it is optimal to complete the side quests as well!

Ding Yi couldn’t even muster the energy to retort. So that’s the reason you shamelessly forced me to steal someone else’s job?

As if it felt Ding Yi’s resentment, the system revealed a little more information: The harder things are, the more benefits you’ll earn. If the host is able to improve on the contents of the original work, there will be extra rewards.

After hearing about the bonus rewards, Ding Yi felt slightly better about the whole ordeal. At least getting something for her efforts was better than getting nothing.

Sigh, whatever, it was her fault for rolling the hell difficulty.

There was nothing she could do about it.

Just follow the designated path and try to survive!

Ding Yi closed the invisible window and sighed deeply before returning home with Mu Yueshi.

But since she decided to stay, it was necessary to do the appropriate homework. Ding Yi went out and inquired about the strange events that had happened to the house in the past, including notable points about the previous owner’s life.

The results of her research were alarming to say the least.

The house was no ordinary haunted house. The house had changed hands several times, and in the span of ten odd years, there have been no less than a dozen tenants! Every one of them had either suffered some sort of injury, gone insane, or even lost their life.

The ones who died all died in front of the door, their corpses mangled. It was very eerie.

Ding Yi finally realized why the shopkeeper was in such a hurry to deny responsibility. Who would want to be associated with such a frightening house?

“This place is close to Mount Yuling. The influence of cultivators should be great. Has nobody ever checked it out?” Ding Yi felt that it was strange. It was a pretty big deal back in the day. Was it possible for the master cultivators nearby to just ignore it?

It didn’t make sense.

“Of course they have.” A wrinkly old woman retorted, sighing afterwards: “If it wasn’t for the Mount Yuling cultivators who suppressed the ghost, all the people with surname Liu in this entire city would have died! That house isn’t dangerous if nobody goes inside… Ah well, people shouldn’t do immoral things or else they’ll live to regret it!”

The old woman was reluctant to say any more and left shaking her head, causing Ding Yi to fall deep into thought.

Mu Yueshi quietly stood nearby, but upon seeing Ding Yi’s solemn countenance, he could not resist asking: “The person who sold us that house might be named Liu, should we look for him?”

That was Ding Yi’s original plan, but now she had second thoughts.

“No.” Ding Yi shook her head, steeling her resolve: “Let’s go home. We’ll talk with the previous owner’s ghost tonight.”

Otherwise, this problem will never be solved.
