The Chronicles Of Rhaxtyx

Chapter 53 - At the Capital

The streets of the capital city were really wide, wider than any of the party ever saw, well except for Damian. They could drive their carriage so easily and without worry for hitting anything.

"This place is awesome!" (Rhaxtyx)

"Will you get down already!" (Roman)

"I wanna see it better!"

Rhaxtyx was trying to climb up the canopy of the carriage and Roman was trying to hold him back. His reasoning was he could see the city better if he had a higher point of view, which was not wrong, but the shortest building they could see was, apart from stables and small shops near the entrance gate of the city, had three floors.

"You will not though!" (Roman)

"You are just jealous I can do this!" (Rhaxtyx)

"The buildings will block your view master. Think logically for once please." (Miriam)

"I see. Well then there's only one choice left."

"Yes. You will come down now, ri-"

"I will have to be on their roof then!"

"Haaaaa?!" (Roman)

Without waiting, Rhaxtyx jumped down from the carriage and ran towards an alley while waving them goodbye.

"I'll find you by night so the place to sleep is in your hands!" (Rhaxtyx)

"I swear to god, that guy will get in big trouble one day because of how he acts!" (Roman)

"Isn't it nice though? He is true to himself. Not like many people I know of. He acts the way he wants." (Damian)

"I see you have finally adapted to Rax's behaviors. That is surprising." (Miriam)

"Why not? Even though I am strict, it is only in line of duty. I'm actually quite the friendly fellow."

"You really seem so."

"So what are we going to do now? Rax has ditched us." (Roman)

"I will have to go to the royal court to report my arrival and get an audience. I don't know you though."

"First we should find a place to sleep, I suppose. What do you say Miriam?" (Roman)

"That would be the sensible thing to do."

"Damn that idiot!"

"Master can be so irresponsible sometimes."

"Haha. You sure are getting along." (Damian)

The rest of the group went to look for an inn based on the suggestions of Damian. He was in the Capital before and it looked like he was very knowledgeable about the city itself, knowing where what was and how to go there etc. and easily giving directions.

"Wow, you are good at explaining things, aren't you?" (Roman)

"Well I had to command a troop of newly recruits often times so I had to learn how to explain." (Damian)

"So you are saying that we can have our carriage in that inn as well?" (Miriam)

"Yes. Crystal Cove is easily one of the best inns in the whole capital."

"The name suggests something different though." (Roman)

"Haha. It is true the place used to be a brothel but believe me, the owner, Stephanie had her fair share of troubles back in the day with various gangs. After seeing that it was practically impossible to continue as a Brothel, she decided to convert to an inn. The rooms can be rented as well so you won't have any problems there. You can also leave the small lassie there without any worries, they will take care of her without any problems when you are out. Oh and also, don't forget to send the owner my regards." (Damian)

"Are you good friends?" (Roman)

"You can consider us that. But she's probably angry at me because I don't really show up at her place anymore. Just tell her I'll visit if she asks and be careful, she can be a bit forceful from time to time."

"Thanks… I guess." (Roman)

They calmly drove towards the Crystal Cove and on the way, Knight Captain Damian jumped down from the carriage saying if he were to be seen there, he was sure Stephanie would wreak havoc and he would be beaten. His wry smile said it as a joke but his eyes were showed his horror. Without anything else to do, Miriam and Roman parted ways with Damian with the promise of meeting once before either of them left for good.

Even though their journey was short, it was pleasant for both parties. Rhaxtyx always bothered Damian about training but he seemed like he didn't mind it at all. Even Miriam and Roman would ask for pointers from time to time. This was received well by Damian and he helped with everything he could.

That's why the trio came to like Damian as one of their own, not wanting to be separated. But there was nothing they could do as it was a chance they ever met anyway. It was also a certainty that everyone would get separated one day so they couldn't really do anything. The only thing they could do was live their lives. That's why Miriam and Roman were getting off the carriage in front of Crystal Cove with calm expressions. They were not the type to get sad from separation anyway.

The carriage and the horse were received by an employee and they were guided inside the tavern. The onside was quite tidy and calm, unlike a normal inn. The patrons were calm and there was a bard playing a calm tune on his lute. The employees were mostly female and they were very gentle. The windows had luxurious curtains and the windows themselves were actually high-quality glass, something rare in these parts of the continent and hard to produce.

A waiter approached them as soon as they were inside. This waiter was male but his face was not rough like most men. He had a gentle smile and his bearings were noble. He spoke in a soft voice, unexpected from a man.

"Greetings and welcome to Crystal Cove. How may we be of service?"

"Uhm. Hello. We were looking for a place to stay a couple of nights actually." (Roman)

Roman's behavior was somewhat unnatural, he seemed uncomfortable in that place. Miriam shook her head and took over.

"As my friend said we are looking for a place to sleep."

"I understand. Please, this way."

The waiter led them to a counter next to the stairs, took out a thick notebook and opened it.

"Our couple rooms are located in the second and third floors."

"Oh no no no! We are not a couple!" (Roman)

"You are not? You seemed like one with the kid and all. I apologize."

"There's no way it would be true now is there? Come on Mr. Waiter, pay attention a little bit more. Haha!" (Roman)

After this exchange, the waiter took out another thick notebook and began talking about the room selections. There were large rooms, medium rooms and small rooms. He suggested they rented a medium room if they were going to stay together.

"We also have a friend outside right now, touring the city by himself. If we count him as well, we'd like two different rooms please." (Miriam)

"You do know he will cause a ruckus right? Like 'Why did you separate like this?' or 'Why are we staying in different rooms, it'll be more fun together right?' That kind of things will be said." (Roman)

"At the worst case, I'll handle master."

When this sentence escaped her mouth, Miriam smiled mischievously. Her smile made Roman and the waiter flinch involuntarily.

"S-so, two rooms then?" (Waiter)

"Oh no. I'm not sleeping in the same room with that mad man. Make it three." (Roman)

"As you wish."

"Oh, there is another matter." (Miriam)

"Sure, how may I help?"

"Can we speak to Miss Stephanie? We have a word from one of her friends." (Miriam)

As soon as Miriam spoke, the whole atmosphere changed. The waiter's eyes opened wide and his mouth opened and closed as if he wanted to say something.

"I-I'm sorry but who are you?"

"We are not acquaintances if you are asking but we really have a word from one of her friends, at least he claims he's friends with Miss Stephanie." (Roman)

While they were talking with the waiter about this, they heard someone descend the stairs. A soft and dreamlike voice entered their ears.

"Who is it that looks for me?"

Meanwhile, on a different part of the city, Rhaxtyx was jumping from roof to roof. He climbed to a nearby roof after he separated from the group with thrill but now that he saw most of the city looked the same, he was kind of bored and decided to look for something interesting.

He was currently looking for a magic shop. His reasoning was:

"I bet there are some shops that sell magical items or some spell scrolls. I just have to find them."

He was quite right. From the moment he entered the city area, he could feel the high mana concentration around the city. It felt pleasant for him being surrounded by this much mana.

"If there's this much mana concentrated here, I'm sure there's bound to be a magic shop! There's even a mage tower in the distance!"

He was thinking out loud. He couldn't keep his excitement to be able to learn new spells and expand his arsenal. His mindless running around finally bore fruit as he stopped on the roof of a magic shop. Thankfully the roofs in the capital was not too steep, one could stand on them without much effort.

Rhaxtyx jumped down from the roof and stably landed in one of the side alleys. He calmly walked out to the street and stretched his arms a bit. He checked if his sword was still on his hip and finally walked towards the door of the shop.

Before he opened the door, his arm stopped for a second and he smiled mischievously. After a small chuckle, he opened the door and entered the shop with the welcoming of a bell ringing above his head.

There was a heavy new book smell inside the shop with some fragrance from some medicinal herbs. A somewhat old woman greeted her with a small nod when he entered and Rhaxtyx returned the greeting with a smile.

The shop had a total of two long display cases that contained various magical scrolls and herbs and there were two weapon showcases that contained a couple of what seemed to be magical weapons and armor pieces.

There was also another customer inside the building, a middle-aged human male with brown short hair. When Rhaxtyx looked at him, their eyes met and a small nod was exchanged. After that, he started touring the shop. He looked around for a while, checking out the scrolls and herbs. All this time, the man's eyes were on him, trying to find something. After some time Rhaxtyx sighed loudly, making sure everybody in the store knew he was bored.

"Look if you are going to ambush me do so with more effort will you?"

After he spoke, a magical aura spread inside the shop and a couple of cloaked figures entered the building from the main door. The middle-aged man turned around with wide eyes, surprised at the fact that they were under attack and the shop owner just said a single line while waving her hand, casting a shielding spell on her wares.

"If you break anything, you pay."
