The Blade Keeper

Chapter 7 - Escape

Dr. Kade glanced at his watch, causing the guards around him to feel nervous.

"I guess it's been about a day. I wonder if my dear little Alex will disappoint me. Someone go down there and see if he is still alive."

The guards immediately started to sweat.

"S-sir, is it necessary for us to head down into the pit? Can't we wait until he wakes up and gets out of there on his own?"

Dr. Kade sent a murderous look towards the fear-struck soldiers.

"You good-for-nothing extras were meant to be used for menial tasks such as these. Why else would we pay you? Get down their at once unless you want to join in on the experiment. . . . As subjects."

The guards let out shrieks of fear before immediately picking one guy to send down into the pit.

The guard chosen was forcefully pushed to the edge, by those he once called brothers, with a tear filled face.

The guard took a glance at the endless pit before letting out a whimper. The other guards handed him a thick rope as comfort.

"Bring the body up when you find it, it can still be of use to us."

"Y-yes sir."

The guard steeled himself before slowly scaling down the pit. After about an hour of steady descent, the man could finally see the floor. The sight that was presented before him was wholly unpleasant.

"Damn it, why do I have to be the one who has to come down to this hell hole? Trial of D.e.s.i.r.es my a.s.s. More like trial of Despair."

The man grumbled you himself before treading around as carefully as possible. All he was looking for was an intact body. Something that wasn't just bones.

After walking a while, he found a black and white haired boy on the floor unmoving. He had found the boy.

The guard took a deep breath before approaching the still body. The boy was free of wounds and seemed to be sleeping. The guard hesitated before reaching out and gently placing his finger on the body's neck.

All though it was faint, the guard still felt a weak heartbeat. At least he didn't have to carry a dead body. The man heaved the body up onto his back before making his way towards where he had scaled the pit. He tugged on the dangling rope signaling the guards up at the top to pull him and the body up.

After about a long time of being pulled up the cliff, the guard and the boy made it up to the top. Dr. Kade and a bunch of panting guards greeted him.

"You have brought back the body! Well done! Is the boy alive or dead?" Asked Dr. Kade after a moment of jubilation.

"Still alive sir, although he seems a bit weak."

"He must've passed the trial! I wonder what he obtained. An item? A piece of knowledge? A special ability? Was there an item on his body?"

The soldier shook his head.

"Then it must be knowledge or power! I can't wait for the boy to wake up! He has indeed met my expectations." Said Dr. Kade with an excited expression. "We were running out subjects who had passed the trial as well! I assume that my dear Alex can last for at least another month!"

The guards shivered upon hearing Dr. Kade's fervent mumbling. They could not help but feel pity towards the unconscious boy.

"I must prepare for the upcoming experiments at once! You people guard the boy until I come back. Do not hurt the boy. I repeat, Do not hurt the boy. If there is a single scratch on him when I get back, then all of your heads will fly. Do you understand me?"

""Yes Sir!""

"Good

Dr. Kade left the room without even bothering to hear the guards' reply leaving them alone with the sleeping boy.

"Damn I hate my job," one of the guards said while sighing. "The pay is so horrible."

"We deserve more for what we do for these arrogant psychopaths."

"Oi, shut up. If you get caught badmouthing the scientists, they will kill you."

Silence ensued the room once more as the guards watched the sleeping boy with bored gazes.

"Ey, did anyone bring something interesting?"

"Nah, They won't let us bring anything in here. They even confiscated my sword. Can you believe that? A guard with no weapon?"

"Let's be honest here, why would we need a weapon? The only thing that can threaten us in here are tortured kids who don't have weapons. If one of the kids did end up escaping, all we have to do is beat him up with our hands."

"Hah, the scientists would stop us from doing that. We can't risk harming their 'precious' subjects- oh, I think the boy is about to wake up."

Alex's eyes were starting to flutter and his body started to twitch. One of the guards hesitated.

"Should we call for Dr. Kade? The boy seems to be a bit weird."

"Nah, the Doctor will arrive eventually. Let's just wait until then."

The guards all watched Alex with interest as he slowly got closer to waking up. Suddenly, Alex's eyes flung open, revealing two blood red irises.

"Oh, the brat is finally awake. Don't make any suspicious moves kid-"

Before the guard could say another word, a black blade pierced through his stomach.

"W-what the f.u.c.k-"

The guard stared at the blade in disbelief before glancing up at the face of the person who had stabbed him.

"F-f.u.c.k.i.n.g insane bastard-"

Cold emotionless blood red eyes flared back at him as he slowly crumpled to the floor.

"W-what is going on-"

Before the guards could recover from their shock, Alex drew the blade from the guard's body and slashed at another guard beheading him entirely.

"W-where did he get a sword?"

"E-everyone be careful! Draw your weapons!"

All the guards reached for their weapons when they realized that none of them had any weapons. The scientists had confiscated them when they entered the cave.

The guards flinched when they heard the swish of a blade and a soft thud.

Another head had been sent flying.

"R-run!"

However, it was too late. Alex came at them like a wolf hunting sheep. The guards had no way to defend themselves and were massacred.

Covered in blood the same color as his eyes, Alex gave the bodies at his feet a cold look.

"I'm done being an experiment."
