The Apocalyptic Mother And Her Struggles

Chapter 41 - The army of their own

I am finally back. Thank you all for waiting. :)

Days passed. Mario would go out to scavenge and harvest as much food they could. He took all the farmers with him. A quarter of their own produce he left with them, after all, it was their own sweat, three quarters he left in warehouses in the shelter. Produce that shelter made was or eaten or dried for later use.

In the future, it could be used for a long time. Emma thought about any possibility. The dried food would be as well proviant for those that plan to stay outside shelter for days. Or it will become a trading item.

Either the way there was always something to do. He knew that instead of him and couple appointed female soldiers no one else could enter Emma's level so when she was alone in the house he felt quite safe. But lately, he felt uncomfortable. Somehow he had that strange feeling when he goes to her level. He would search whole surroundings every time, but after a while, he would feel like someone is staring at the house.

Unfortunately, Emma was against him leaving guards in her house. He had his own apartment in the city district not far from Olivers. He still walked around with the full body protection mask so not many people saw his real appearance.

Emma wrote on her program for days then went to the main room to check on the progress of zombies, to check off any issues inside the shelter but Oliver and Mario took care of most of the things. Everyone could see a change in her. Slowly but sure she changed from a bit silly but cute woman into a real authoritative boss. And they needed that.

How could they trust someone who was weak? Actually, she became weakling because of the way her husband molded her in years. Now she had to throw away that stuff of her back and become real support. After all, so many lives depend on it.

All new arrivals became stronger as well. Most of the people that could train started training for an emergency. From a small child until an elder person that could move. Learning everything they need, from shooting to fighting to surviving in wildness. Every little thing they could learn.

The schools started with new programs. And children could choose what they wanted to learn. Basic things like mathematic and literacy were a must, everything else could be personally chosen. That made people realize that some children had quite an affinity for certain things.

Doctors from the hospital became teachers as well. They found many new talents that could become one of them. But that is just one of the tasks that children were good at. There are few children that had an amazing affinity in inventing things. So they were put together with those crazy scientists to be though everything they need for the future. Of course, there were many children that were not geniuses but were good at handy work and simple tasks. They were given extra points if they would finish their tasks on time and so everyone had filled life, including Aisa.

She had an affinity with the military. Somehow she was accepted from start on as she tried so much and with time she became captain of children squadron. No child in her division ever got angry that the girl who tall just a couple of feet of the floor was commanding them with a strict voice. They could see how much effort she put when she trained and of course, wanted from others at least that much.

Actually they would often beg her to join her ranks so after a while, she started making tests. Once a month there would be a written and practical tests of their skills. Morena and Guadalupe became her assistants almost naturally. Already on the first day after their arrival, they went to Aisa and under her strict regiment, they became rapidly fast and strong. Even stronger than their brothers.

Their mother became famous in arms fighting as she had quite good eyes and Hose and his sons became the warriors that choose to protect the two women. Somehow it just went that way.

Guadalupe was older from the two so she felt like she should order the younger ones around. Aisa let her do that. Some people were born to become higher ranks, but Morena was not less authoritative. With their help, three full squadrons of children were made that actually became a strong force in the future.

Emma looked at the slow pace of the zombie tide and wondered. On another hand she let the newborn zombies spread out through the country. Luckily only in beginning, they seem to be smelling nice and yummy to zombies, but with time the zombies didn't attack them anymore. With that, she found a way to command them. They would under her command go from city to city and kill as many zombies they could. Not all cities had a light so they did that when no one would be on the streets and no one would notice their doings.

As other zombies ignored them and felt no fear, the mass killing could continue. Slowly the cities became safer, but the tide didn't become smaller. She still feared that the zombie tide would attack the newborn zombies so after a while she sent them to one of the abandoned old shelters and let them stay there. The strange thing was that new zombies seem to get much energy after eating zombie's hearts.

So she let them collect all the zombie hearts and freeze. After they cleaned the xth-city of tens of thousands of zombies, she let them go to the shelter and just stay there. Those new zombies were not as intelligent as humans but still had an understanding of a child. They realized many things after she sent them all the instructions and waited for future tasks. They could feel her care and somehow she became their mother. Emma and Aisa could feel their thoughts and feelings so they became emotional.

Somehow they felt they had to protect them. Unfortunately behind their backs, new trouble was brewing. And not a little.
