Jiang Changning didn’t care too much, a dog will jump over the wall in a hurry and a rabbit will bit people in a hurry. It was not good for her to corner Jiang Luo too much.

Besides, the favorability of the servants in the mansion was probably just equivalent to a drop of water in a bucket for Jiang Luo.

What she needed to care about at the moment is another matter.

After lunch, Jiang Changning sat on the couch to catch up on sleep. Hong Xing entered the room gently from the yard door. She frowned tightly, biting her lip and standing aside as if she had something hard to say.

“What’s wrong?” Jiang Changning didn’t move, her eyes remained closed as she talked to Hong Xing.

“My lady, Gu Yan is here again.” Seeing that Jiang Changning was unmoved, Hong Xing couldn’t help but said: “He has arrived since earlier in the morning, and now are still standing outside the mansion. Don’t you want to meet him?”

“No, you go out and just send him away.” Jiang Changning turned over and pulled the lake-blue silky quilt around her body.

Gu Yan is Gu Xiujing’s people, so Changning didn’t know if there was something wrong in his head. Since returning from the hunting festival, he had been coming here every day. He didn’t do anything else, just said he was delivering something from his master.

There were presents for her to eat, use, and play with.

This strategy was so bizarre that even Jiang Changning couldn’t understand it.

Could it be that Jiang Luo’s aura of heartthrob was suddenly turned off? But every time she sees Jiang Luo, she always boasts about Gu Xiujing with bravado, and it didn’t look like the two were breaking up.

And Jiang Changning also remembered another thing.

In her previous life, she was slandered as some shameless girl who was having an affair with a guard and that had been the reason why Gu Xiujing broke their engagement in public, unwilling to be humiliated.

That incident caused a lot of trouble at the time, and Jiang Changning’s reputation was so bad that there was no room for redemption at all.

And that guard in the rumour was Gu Yan. But now that she thought about it, she couldn’t be sure who wrote those letters in her previous, there was a chance that they might belong to Jiang Luo the whole time.

In this new life, she will naturally not repeat the same mistakes.

Hong Xing did as she was ordered. Avoiding people all the way, and came to the back door of Jiang’s mansion cautiously.

Gu Yan was squatting at the door, his complexion was a little bad. A beautifully carved wooden box was placed beside him.

After being blocked by the Hou family’s attendant and having the door closed for several hours, he started to feel a little resentful in his heart.

But this was something that the young master especially ordered and it must be delivered successfully.

Seeing Hong Xing approaching from a distance, Gu Yan hastily squeezed out a few smiles.

“Miss Hong Xing.”

“Sir.” Hongxing nodded reservedly and swept the mud off Gu Yan’s boots.

Ever since Young Master Gu protected the Hou family’s second daughter last time, the eldest miss has been cold to him. Never mind all those rejected presents, she didn’t even want to meet eyes with any person from the Gu family at all.

Anyway, the two families are still close, Hong Xing sighed deeply. Looked like the eldest lady is determined to break up with Gu Xiujing.

When Gu Yan saw Hong Xing’s appearance, he knew that today will also be the same.

Although it might be impossible to change the result, he had already made some psychological preparations. Even small, he still held out hope and said some kind words to Hong Xing.

“Miss, please say kind words to the eldest lady. The things in this box were carefully selected by the young master. It would be a pity to take them back like this.”

“I understand, unfortunately, it was a decision made by my lady, and I can’t just change her order.”

Hong Xing saw Gu Yan begging in a low and pitiful voice, but when she was about to soften her heart, she remembered Jiang Changning’s cold yet clear eyes.

She shivered involuntarily and immediately realized her thoughts. I don’t know why, even though physically my lady doesn’t look different but sometimes she will become scary for no reason. It’s better to not do any wrong things against her.

Hong Xing said nothing more, turned around and just left.

Gu Yan carried his things and waited for a while.

He saw the two things in the box.

A golden hairpin with beautiful floral details and long golden dangling pieces. Alongside it was a golden necklace decorated with a pair of transparent purple flower pendants.

Both were high-quality present but when hunting, our preparations are more valuable than the bait.

Gu Yan put away the presents and walked out of Gu’s mansion with the box in his hand.

Suddenly, a little girl in servant attire came out.

It was Qing He who had become Jiang Luo’s servant now.

Gu Yan saw her and the smile on his face became much more sincere.

“Miss Qing He.”

“Sir.” Qinghe replied indifferently, and took out a few golden coins from her purse and threw them to Gu Yan: “My lady told you to buy yourself some tea.”

“Thank you to Second Miss.” Gu Yan grinned, and the depression in his heart was swept away.

He handed the box in his hand to Qing He and lowered his voice: “Master said this is for the second lady.”

Qing He opened the box and took out the hair ornament inside. Qing He put the ornament away, thought of something, and then asked Gu Yan: “Mr. Gu, do you have something to say to my girl?”

Gu Yan obviously didn’t expect Qing He to ask such a question, but he was also clever. He hurriedly replied in a low voice: “Young master said, the second girl just wait a little longer, a good thing will come soon.”

Qinghe nodded and entered Jiang’s courtyard. But Gu Yan looked around a few times, seeing that no one was paying attention, before he quickly walked a few steps, turned around the alley and entered the bustling stream of people.

Qing He walked into Jiang Luo’s yard with her head down and handed the ornament in her sleeve to Jiang Luo.

Jiang Luo took a few glances, then casually threw it aside.

Jiang Changning doesn’t want the ‘leftovers’ and she doesn’t care too much about presents.

The red sandalwood incent burner in the room was emitting light smoke.

Qing He told Jiang Luo what Gu Yan had said to her, and Jiang Luo just laughed hearing the message like she didn’t care.

Gu Xiujing has been controlled by her, it is up to her whether to marry or not.

“Jiang Changning still doesn’t see Gu Yan?”

Qing He suddenly heard Jiang Changning’s name without raising her eyes: “Yes, my lady.”

Qing He didn’t know why, Jiang Luo always has an aura that attracts her.

The longer she got along with her, the more amiable she feel Jiang Luo.

As for the eldest girl Jiang Changning, she hasn’t thought about her for a long time.

Jiang Luo understood what Gu Xiujing meant, and she didn’t mind waiting. Seeing the ornament on the table, Jiang Luo stretched out her thin white fingers to fiddle with it twice.

But it’s better to resolve Jiang Changning’s marriage with him as soon as possible, to cut off Mother Gu’s intention, and save her from doing these things from time to time that only disgusts herself.

Gu Yan hurried back to Gu’s mansion, and when he turned around the bamboo garden, he arrived at Gu Xiujing’s study. Unfortunately, he entered right at the moment when Mother Gu was talking to the young master.

Gu Xiujing sat in front of the desk with a loose posture.

Mother Gu’s voice rang out throughout the room.

“How can you change your opinion now? Although Miss Jiang is not the real daughter, what happened on the last hunt caught the favour of the empress and the Holy Majesty. Now she has been bestowed the title of a count, and her status is now not much different from that of the third girl of the Jiang family.”

Gu Xiujing was silent, how could Mother Gu fail to see her son’s thoughts?

She didn’t know what kind of demon Jiang Luo used to fascinate his pure and ascetic son into this state.

Jiang Changning grew up in the Hou mansion and was known as a considerate and proper young lady, so what’s so good about Jiang Luo who grew up in a small family in the village, must be a crooked lady.

At first, Mother Gu thought she was a good person, but she didn’t expect the newly-returned young lady to end up laying in the arms of an engaged man at the flower-viewing feast, not to mention her dishevelled clothes and shameless face.

Gu Xiujing’s pure nature can’t see the scheme but Mother Gu can see through it clearly.

Not to mention that she now has the reputation of a witch.

Mother Gu rubbed her forehead due to the headaches and turned her head only to see Gu Yan standing respectfully outside the study.

Her eyes naturally fell on the wooden box in Gu Yan’s hand.

Does this servant just come back from Jiang’s mansion?

Mother Gu’s complexion improved a little, no matter how unwilling Gu Xiujing was, at least he listened to her words.

Take good things to coax her. After a few times, the relationship will naturally deepen.

Jiang Changning and Gu Xiujing have been friends for more than ten years, and now they should not be afraid of any affair. As a mother, she believed she can always bring him back to the right path.

“There are still a few days before the Lantern Festival. If you have nothing to do, go and see it with the Jiang family girl. The little girl always likes those.”

t/n:

I completely rephrased the sentence about the presents in the box. It got some flowery description that totally lost me in the mtl haha… but its basically just a hair pin and a pendant. Here some reference photo of what it might be:

I cant find any suitable pendant photo appropriate during that time so let me just show some pretty one i found.

Also here is what the incent burner in Luo’s room probably look like too, cuz those got some weird description too.

Man… i really wish mother gu remains the same and doesn’t fall prey to the system. When she talked about the flower-viewing accident, it just made me think that oh, others in the place might be just as clueless to the situation lol… like they saw an affair happen right in front of their eyes. Thats kinda funny and egregious at the same time.

Also i dont know whether its because i work slowly or the story actually progress pretty slowly… oh well, now ive got a full time job, so prob gonna update on saturday and sunday here. If you can, please support me so that i actually got some energy and motivation to continue translating the novel (and maybe pick up a new novel too).
