Chapter 3: Jack of All Trades, Master of None?
Ryu turned six years old.
And today was the day of the baptism ceremony.
Children who had turned six from within the territory gathered one after another at the church.
As the children and their parents quietly took their seats and waited, the time arrived.
The priest began his explanation of the baptism ceremony.
According to the priest’s explanation,
By confirming one’s skills or “talents,” one could use them as a guide for future efforts.
For example, if one’s skills were axe-wielding and sewing, by putting effort into axe-related martial arts and sewing, one could gain abilities associated with the respective skills.
As a result, the basic stats will increase.
For axe wielders, stats like “strength” and “stamina” tend to be the focus, with bonuses added, whereas for sewing, “dexterity” is the main stat that increases and bonuses are applied.
The acquisition of these abilities is informed by the “Voice of the World.”
The “Voice of the World” is said to be the voice of the gods above and is heard directly in one’s mind.
The moment when this voice is heard is the moment when one has made the effort to fulfill the necessary conditions.
After the priest finishes his explanation, each person is led to a separate room where a ritual is performed to confirm the skills they possess.
Not doing this in front of others prevents future complications that might arise due to knowing someone else’s skills. Also, the individual seems to be responsible for sharing this information with others after the baptism ceremony.
Of course, the priest is bound by a duty of confidentiality too.
It was Ryu’s turn.
His father and mother gently pushed him on the back.
“Go ahead, Ryu. There’s nothing to worry about, it’ll be over soon.”
“Yes!”
After responding to the two of them, Ryu was led into the room by the priest.
Inside the room, there was a statue resembling a god, and a tool with a glass sphere embedded in a square box was placed in front of it.
This seemed to be a magical tool used for seeing one’s skills.
“Now, while offering your gratitude to the gods in prayer, place your hand on this sphere.”
As instructed by the priest, Ryu placed his hand on the sphere.
Suddenly, a dazzling light illuminated the room.
Ryu was surprised and almost pulled his hand back, but
“Don’t let go of it.”
At the priest’s voice, he placed his hand back to where it was.
“The skills of the lord’s child are… Gokudo? And Jack of All Trades, Master of None… Well, that’s unfortunate. Ah, but you have a separate appraisal skill; this will come in handy.”
“Is Jack of All Trades, Master of None a bad thing?”
Ryu voiced his concern at the priest’s words.
“Jack of All Trades, Master of None is a unique ability that allows you to use almost any skill, but on the other hand, no matter how much effort you put in, none of them will reach their full potential. It is said that skills have talent ratings ranging from S+ to G-, but with Jack of All Trades, and Master of None, all ratings stop at G+ and will not increase no matter how hard you try. However, don’t be too disheartened, as there are useful abilities like Small Magic Storage among them. Moreover, having a separate special skill, appraisal, implies that although there are individual talent limits, there is potential for growth with effort. Please don’t worry.”
“What is this Gokudo?”
Ryu, who had been in a similar profession in his previous life, asked the priest in disbelief, thinking that it couldn’t be true.
“I’ve been in this profession for 40 years, and this is the first time I’ve seen this skill. I recommend having your character appraised and analyzed by the famous scholar, Professor Seiten, who lives in the territory. That’s all.”
“Understood, thank you.”
Ryu bowed and left the room.
His father, Farza, and mother, Cecil, seemed worried since Ryu’s turn had taken longer than the others. They rushed over to him as he came out of the room.
“Are you alright, Ryu? What happened?”
“Did the priest say anything?”
At their words, the priest intervened,
“This is a church, my lord, please be quiet.”
“Sorry…”
Ryu’s parents bowed their heads and left with him.
Outside, parents who had finished the baptism ceremony were rejoicing and also worrying over the skills their children had acquired.
Some parents were saddened by skills that seemed unlikely to allow their child to inherit the family business. However, as it was a day to celebrate their children’s future, most were being congratulated.
As a lord and a parent, Farza had witnessed this scene many times.
Every year, seeing this sight made him believe that the future of his territory was bright. This year, however, it was his son Ryu’s departure, a child prodigy as many believed, and his happiness was even greater.
Watching his joyful parents, Ryu felt a heavy burden on his heart.
He wondered if his family would be disappointed when they learned about the “Jack of All Trades, Master of None” skill, which even the priest had found disheartening.
