Reborn as the Hero's Daughter

Chapter 388: Early Morning Incident

It had been ten days since we had arrived in Stollar. We took three days of rest at first, but we worked the entire week since then by taking requests through Gadius.

“Mh…Mgnnnmh.”

I rubbed my eyes and woke up as the morning sun fell on me from the window.

The requests given to us as first-rank Adventurers were barely enough to cover expenses for the same day. We had no time to take breaks.

If we got those odd jobs once again today, I wasn’t sure if we could even cover the hotel charges.

“Well, Gadius does say we don’t have to pay for them.”

Given that I was his friend’s daughter, Gadius was kind enough to offer me to be exempted from the charges.

But for Michelle and Cloud who planned to be Adventurers, that wasn’t a very good proposal. It was naturally good to have some leeway with money, but it would be hard to claim you were independent with that.

I pulled the window curtains open and started to change from my nightclothes. I put on a thick jersey and skirt, and knee-length socks.

I finished changing while killing a yawn and moved on to equipping defensive gear. But then, I noticed something I couldn’t overlook.

“Hmm…?”

I could not fasten the belt of my chest plate properly. I paled up wondering if I had gained weight for a moment and decided to put on my sword belt before it.

This time, I managed to equip it without problems, so it didn’t seem like I had gained weight.

“In which case, I guess I just grew again…”

A body in its growth period changed day by day. It seemed that my breasts were approaching Maria’s step by step too.

Normally that would be a welcome thing, but it was a complex growth for me. And it was troublesome that I couldn’t equip my breastplate because of that.

“Only the belt needs to be adjusted so it shouldn’t take that long.”

Our current earnings were about five silver coins a day. And we paid three of them daily for the inn charges. With the food expenses included, we could barely set one silver aside.

And even those savings disappeared in the blink of an eye if we splurged a little. Michelle and Cloud who were big eaters were barely scraping by every day.

It would hurt our pockets if I went to the weapons store and got my armor adjusted.

“Well, we do have savings that we brought from Raum too…”

We assumed this kind of situation would happen and had been saving up funds since the early days. But we couldn’t continue being in the red forever. That said, Gadius was only giving us downtown work with hardly any profit.

I could see our funds drying up in the not-so-distant future.

“I have to take some measures or this’ll be bad.”

I decided to leave the room with just the sword belt equipped for now. I woke up a bit earlier today, so Michelle and Cloud turned out to still be asleep.

Our rooms were at the end of the second floor. Finia’s room was next to mine, and Michelle’s across the corridor. Cloud’s was next to her room.

As I went down the stairs and headed to the hall on the first floor, I saw Gadius reading some letters at the counter.

“Hey, Gadius.”

“W-Wah!? Oh, is it you, Nicole?”

“Why do you look so surprised?”

“N-Nothing… Pay it no mind.”

As I asked while tilting my head in wonder, Gadius dismissed it with unusually flustered gestures.

After he put the letter into his pocket, he noticed the change in my clothes.

“Huh you are not armed… No, you are. But what about your armor?”

“Mmm, the size is off by a bit. The chest area in particular.”

“Bgghh!”

My reply got a weird cough out of him. It was like he was holding it but failed to. Did he catch a cold or something?

“W-Well you are growing kids. I suppose such things do happen.”

“So, I was thinking of going to make adjustments to it, but the money is proving to be a problem.”

“Hmph, do you think I would go easy on you just because you have been completing jobs for a week?”

“Not at all. You are too stubborn for that.”

“So you understand. You need to train for a bit longer… or so I would like to say, but I suppose it is time.”

“Hmm?”

With a big sigh, Gadius put a document on the counter and pushed it towards me.

“What’s this?”

“Recommendation letter for the Guild for advancing to the second rank. You have grown somewhat popular in this city already, so it should not be a problem to raise your ranks.”

“Popular… Ah, so that’s what it’s all about.”

I finally noticed Gadius’ true intentions with this.

We’ve mostly taken odd jobs the past week. From warehouse roof repairs to luggage transport, street cleaning, wall repairs and so on, avoiding anything adventurous.

But thanks to that, the city people were starting to see us in a favorable light.

Gadius seemed to have prioritised giving us such jobs to get us familiar with the city.

We, or rather, I had a very complex standing due to being Lyell and Maria’s daughter. That could lead to them seeing me as an immature kid who wore the mantle of her parents' authority.

By prioritising our acceptance and giving us minor jobs, Gadius sort of created our standing here.

“Thanks for being considerate.”

“Mgh-hm…Sure.”

He took on a complex expression at my thanks. Something about him looked different from yesterday. I was about to press him about that, but Michelle suddenly came running from the second floor.

“Waaaah! Nicole, lend me some money!”

“W-What the?”

Michelle had never worried about money until now.

Taking a look at her, the chest part of her clothes was torn. For a moment, I wondered whether Cloud did something outrageous, but that didn’t seem to be the case.

For now, I decided to listen to what she had to say over the meal.
