ReBirth Of The Primordial

Chapter 31 - Conflicting Memories and Reality

From the day Io had left Eden worked to persuade Sorcha and Dagan to escape. The behemoth that had come after them was not something that they could handle. Dagan and Sorcha were obstinate in their insistence that Io would keep them safe and return to them as soon as she killed the behemoth.

It was confusing to Eden. Where did they get that confidence? Why would a creature like Io spare them the time? It made more sense that Io was toying with them until the game grew tiresome to eat her prey. It just so happened that the behemoth interrupted their time together and Io made a valiant exit under the pretense of going out to 'save them all.'

It was frustrating. Even though they looked the same, were the same species, they were... Different. Normally their species were born in solitary and eventually found their way to their homelands. At least that's what Eden's bloodline memories related through hazy dreams, but it seemed that these two didn't have those memories.

The conception of their species could occur through partners or an excessive gathering of essence in a particular region. Those born through the later process are called 'Sparks.' Just like a spark, these little ones flicker into existence, but just as quickly it can be either extinguished or grow in a raging inferno. A Spark is the purest form of essence as there is only one contributor. Some Sparks referred to themselves as, 'Children of Thaumatos,' as they view the world as their progenitor.

Dagan and Sorcha had stumped Eden when they asked where Dagan and Sorcha's protector was. Their response had been "Io." Dagan and Sorcha had also said that Io was the one the pulled them out of the ground. That Io was the one to get them to safety, and that she had been with them even before their hatching. Eden stopped here when the two began to shed tears. Whatever it may be, the answers were not worth upsetting them. They may not have the memories that were handed down among their kind, but that was okay, Eden did and they would help Dagan and Sorcha fill in the gaps where they needed to.

It bothered Eden though. "What had happened at their birth though?" Eden couldn't help but wonder.

Who was that one that had unsealed their egg and where were they? The seal that kept them from hatching had developed over millennia as a countermeasure to their species fragility after hatching. A seal also served as a homing beacon for others of their kind. The stronger the resonance the better. Strong resonance meant potential to hatch, whereas though with lower resonance would shelter and watch over the egg. One to defend, while others tend. That was the ideal condition for hatching.

The one to defend usually had the highest resonation and would be the one to unseal the egg. Their kind had developed this way because this afforded the greatest rate of survival, evolution at its finest. While it was great if one could tend to the hatchling without a defender or protector as they were called the likelihood of a Spark surviving their hatchling years decreased dramatically.

That was something else that bothered Eden. Resonance required a certain amount of experience. The new calling to the old, some would say. That was why resonance was different for each Spark. Normally they were already full-grown themselves. That was another thing that threw Eden off.

Eden could feel lines forming on their tender head and gently rubbed them away. They leaned back against the cave and wrapped small thin arms around their knees. Why did Eden and Dagan have such a strong resonance? Dagan was too young to fulfill the obligation of a protector and Sorcha as a tender was too young as well. Tack on the fact that they were related, there was no way. Protectors and tenders had the potential to be mates always. In other words, Dagan and Sorcha resonating as a protector and tender did not make any sense.

On the other hand, a protector was able to unseal an egg without a tender. This is where Eden could feel a head begin to develop, even if Dagan displayed wisdom beyond his young age, was that truly enough? Dagan was still a hatchling himself. Where was his protector? Sorcha too, why did she not have one as well. The duo had said that they something called 'twins' which baffled Eden. The explanation that they gave was that they had been born together was a strange concept but Eden supposed their current circumstances were strange enough as it was.

As a species, they were born with basic knowledge or inherited memories, the ability to comprehend, and reason. So, if that is how Dagan and Sorcha came into the world, then Eden would accept it. However, that and the whole, 'Io backstory' was different. Their recognition of Io as their Protector was unlikely the truth of the matter.

It wasn't that Eden thought Dagan and Sorcha were lying. It wasn't that at all. It was impossible for a species other than their own to resonate with ones such as them. History had proven it over and over again. Millennia of hatchlings to protectors of their own kind. It was more probable that Io had killed their protector and then taken their place.

There were a few hiccups in this theory though, why would Dagan and Sorcha need to be pulled out of the ground and why would Io, ȧssuming she was not playing with them, let them live? Sorcha had said that they had lived elsewhere before being born here. Eden had originally thought that they had simply confused their bloodline memories with living a previous life but when they had described their previous memories none of it matched up.

Eden sighed, irritated with all the holes in Dagan and Sorcha's beginning. They bit the tip of their claw, brows scrunched together. Out of nowhere, Dagan ran his claws gently over Eden's forehead, smoothing out little lines.

"Eden, are you okay?" The little flame questioned, concern lacing his voice as he began to carefully run his hands through Eden's long black hair, gently detangling it.

"I'm just tired." Eden closed their eyes, enjoying the sensation of being cared for. Their world could be so cold, but in moments like this, it made all the memories of danger fade for just a little bit.

"Forget it," Eden thought. They could only do what they could do. So starting tomorrow, they would need to start catching filling the gaps that Dagan and Sorcha had in regards to the world around them. Tomorrow and the days that followed would be up to the three of them to survive. It was important that Dagan and Sorcha learn to rely on Eden too. Not that Eden didn't enjoy their care, but Eden needed them to know that Eden could contribute as well.

Eden felt a bit better with that in mind. It was like a weight had been lifted from their shoulders.. Slowly, their breathing deepened, the gentle ministrations of Dagan untangling and braiding their long black hair, sending the hatchling off to sleep sweet dreams.
