Chapter 16: Film Killer

It was 6 o'clock in the evening at the star-studded event, and the celebrities began to enter in order.

Walking the red carpet at this moment was the newcomer little flower Jiang Ke'er, who had been in the industry for two years. She was considered quite hardworking, having taken on four variety shows and three web dramas in the past year alone. She was also one of the hot prospects speculated by forum users.

The star-studded event was different from usual. There were five or six cameras near the signature wall and seven or eight interview microphones.

Jiang Ke'er was surrounded in the middle, feeling as if she had already exploded.

"Miss Jiang, with so many dramas and variety shows this year, do you have any insights on time management?"

"Miss Jiang, could you talk about the role that left the deepest impression on you among the many characters you've played?"

"Miss Jiang..."

Jiang Ke'er adjusted the folds on her shoulder, maintaining an elegant posture, ready to give a thoughtful response. However, she heard someone in the crowd shout a name.

"Is that Shen Qingzhi?"

Jiang Ke'er instinctively turned her head, and along with her, numerous journalists and photographers also turned their heads.

In an instant, the previously crowded group of people around her dispersed.

Jiang Ke'er:...

Shen Qingzhi was wearing a bright pink princess-style gown with petal-shaped sleeves that spread out. The skirt was adorned with countless specks of golden powder, creating a dazzling effect.

Such a color and style could easily come across as ostentatious and gaudy if not handled with care.

However, Shen Qingzhi had a natural grace about her. Her slender shoulders, straight neck, and delicate facial features exuded an inherent elegance that could pull off any look.

She was already young and beautiful, even with minimal makeup, she possessed a breathtaking beauty. She had earned the nickname "Film Killer" in private circles.

The sound of cameras clicking became even more frequent now, with the frequency doubling from before.

In terms of fame and experience, Shen Qingzhi was slightly less than Jiang Ke'er. Otherwise, they wouldn't have appeared together at the same event.

However, those seasoned individuals in the entertainment industry knew exactly who to capture for topics and traffic.

Every time someone released a new photo of Shen Qingzhi, it would attract a wave of fans who were eager to praise her beauty.

At the same time, the black fans* would also join in, and a fan-black battle would unfold in the comment section.

*haters/anti-fan

All of these are traffic!

That's why many people say that Shen Qingzhi has a controversial personality. Despite not being a top-tier celebrity, whenever her name comes up, it can spark more intense controversies than some bigger stars.

Now, with more than ten microphones pointed at Shen Qingzhi, each media outlet aiming to meet their KPIs*, the questions being asked inevitably contained hidden traps.

*key performance indicators, a measurable value that indicates the success or performance of an individual, team, department, or organization in achieving specific objectives.

When Shen Qingzhi first entered the industry, she had been caught off guard multiple times by these cunning questions. But now, she has seen through the tricks of these reporters.

There were a few instances where she was almost provoked by tricky questions, but she managed to maintain a good temper.

After all, before leaving home today, Song Ling had repeatedly reminded her: Safety is a blessing. Don't strive for great achievements, just avoid any mistakes.

She used to be far from obedient like this. If it weren't for the trouble she caused last week, and if she hadn't spent these days at home reflecting on herself, she wouldn't have had such a good temper.

After a few minutes of the interview, Shen Qingzhi maintained a proper demeanor and spoke with grace, surprising many who had ulterior motives.

As Shen Qingzhi looked at the various expressions on the faces of the reporters, she sneered in her heart: Hmph, you want to trick me again? No way! I have grown up, and this time, I'll make sure to impress Ling-jie when I go back.

The red carpet entrance ceremony passed without any major incidents. The reporters were unable to uncover any sensational news, but the photographers managed to capture a plethora of close-up, high-definition beautiful photos.

Shen Qingzhi entered the venue and searched for her seat. From a distance, she saw an actress in a purple gown waving at her.

"Qingzhi, over here."

Shen Qing  approached and indeed saw her name on the seat.

She noticed the name "Yu Kexin" on the adjacent seat and felt a little happy. "We're sitting next to each other."

Speaking of which, she had known Yu Kexin for over ten years, and they were good friends in junior high school.

Although they had drifted apart in college, they unexpectedly ended up in the same industry after graduation, which could be considered quite a coincidence.

Yu Kexin pulled Shen Qingzhi to sit down and took out a packet of cookies from her pocket, handing some to her. "The banquet after the awards ceremony will take at least another three hours. Let's have a snack first."

Shen Qingzhi had been waiting in the guest room since 4:30 pm, changing clothes and doing makeup on an empty stomach. She hadn't thought as far ahead as Yu Kexin.

She didn't bother being polite with her old classmate and thanked her before tearing open the package.

As she tore open the package, Yu Kexin whispered, "Did you snatch the spotlight from Jiang Ke'er again?"

Shen Qingzhi swallowed the cookie in her mouth and expressed her confusion, "I entered in the order given by the organizers, how did I snatch her spotlight?"

"Ah, it's more or less the same."

Yu Kexin leaned closer and continued, "Do you know why Jiang Ke'er is here this time?"

"What else could it be? Like you and me, to receive the award." Shen Qingzhi took out another cookie, nonchalantly.

She was never too interested in other people's matters in the entertainment industry, unlike Yu Kexin, who was always curious and inquisitive, a true "information seeker."

Seeing Shen Qingzhi's indifferent expression, Yu Kexin felt worried.

"Jiang Ke'er isn't here to receive an award this time, she's here to present an award. She'll be presenting the New Rising Actress, which you will be receiving later."

Wow, you really are good at gathering information. I'm not even sure which award I'll receive later.

Shen Qingzhi wiped the crumbs from the corner of her mouth and didn't react immediately. "So what?"

"So what?" Yu Kexin said impatiently.

"You were constantly overshadowing her on the variety show we were both on."

"This time, you're receiving the New Rising Actress award for your role as Su Huai'an. The production team originally invited her too."

"Just now, you stole her spotlight again when you entered. Anyway... she's going to say something during the award presentation, so try to restrain yourself and not act impulsively."

Shen Qingzhi realized it a bit late. "No wonder I noticed she didn't look too happy when she saw me. By the way, how do you know all this better than me?"

Yu Kexin was defeated. "Come on, these things are probably only unknown to you. Aren't you the internet-savvy surfer? Don't tell me you only search for your own name online?"

Shen Qingzhi nodded. "Otherwise?"

No wonder she didn't know. Every time Jiang Ke'er's fans attacked Shen Qingzhi, they used abbreviations of their names to avoid attracting her fans.

Seeing the concerned expression on Yu Kexin's face, Shen Qingzhi comforted her in return, like a caring mother. "Thank you for reminding me. Don't worry, I've never been an impulsive person."

Yu Kexin: Well, you better not be.

The two of them chatted for a while, and then the awards ceremony began.

This awards ceremony was jointly organized by major online platforms, inviting the most popular and trending stars in the entertainment industry to come together. Each person will receive an award, aiming to involve everyone.

Although these "pork sharing" awards lack authoritative significance, they can please fans and serve as a validation of commercial value. Many renowned celebrities also attach great importance to them.

*means most attendees if not all will receive an award

Of course, besides the popular stars, they often invite respected veteran artists to elevate the grandeur of the event.

In summary, this ceremony is a microcosm of the current entertainment industry, ranging from award-winning actors and actresses to rising newcomers. It's bustling and lively.

The New Rising Actress award, considered a relatively less significant award, was presented in a later time slot, serving as a transition between two major awards.

Shen Qingzhi waited on the guest seat with an empty stomach for nearly two hours until she finally heard the host reading from the script on stage.

"Now, we will present the annual New Rising Actress award. Her portrayal of the character Su Huai'an was genuine, natural, and emotionally restrained. She vividly interpreted the struggles and hardships of a female celebrity. Let's welcome the winner, Shen Qingzhi, to come on stage and receive the award."

Shen Qingzhi stood up, delicately smiling, and walked step by step towards the stage.

Embarrassingly enough, even though she had been in the industry for a year, this was her first time receiving an award with so many industry giants watching, even if it was just a "pork" award.

As she stepped onto the stage, she exchanged greetings with the host.

The host began, "Speaking of which, our presenter and Qingzhi have quite a connection this time."

As soon as the words fell, Jiang Ke'er, also dressed in a pink dress, walked towards the center of the stage.

To create a buzz, the organizers deliberately invited Jiang Ke'er to present the award to Shen Qingzhi. The host handed her the microphone.

"As a presenter this time, is there anything you would like to say to Qingzhi?"

Jiang Ke'er took the microphone, her smile sweet and innocent, portraying a pure and harmless appearance.

"I think Qingzhi is truly remarkable. Being so young and yet able to portray such a complex and contradictory character with such depth.

"At that time, many people around me couldn't help but feel a strong resentment towards Su Huai'an, saying it was truly an 'authentic performance'."

Author's Note:

Originally, I thought this chapter could include Movie Queen Gu's appearance, but as I started writing, I realized there were still many things to be explained, so I had to move it to the next chapter. The moment for their joint red carpet appearance hasn't arrived yet, but Queen Gu can find other reasons to have fun with her wife.

I'll be taking a day off tomorrow (7/5), and both this chapter and the next chapter's red envelopes will be dropped. Cat bixin* (=^o^=)
