Our Hearts Beat For Anne

Chapter 8 - Getting along

Vincent's pov

I entered my new office and surveyed the room. It was quite spacious and the furnitures were of good quality.

I finished my internship and was retained by the hospital as a medical doctor and was giving my office today. Mum wanted to hold a party but I refused which made her pout all day. I'll make it up to her by taking her out for dinner later.

I settled down and got ready for the day's work.

I was told earlier that a group of med lab students will be doing their project and we staffs were to assist them however we can.

I left my office, walking down the hallway, someone ran into me, sending both my and her papers flying.

'Am so sorry!' She said shuffling to pick up the papers. She stood up, handing me my papers.

I recognized her as a student with her ID card around her neck.

'Forgive my clumsiness, I was rushing to meet up with my partner.'

'Its ok.' I said.

She started towards her direction and called out to someone.

'Hey wait for me!'

I turned to see who she was calling out to and my eyes landed and locked with brown ones.

I saw hesitation in them before she walked up to me.

'Good morning doctor.'

'Good morning Anne.'

'We're here on a school project,'

She said and from they way she was moving from one foot to the other, one could tell she was uncomfortable.

'So I've been told, if you need anything, am at your service."

"Ok."

I finished my work and looked at the time, 9:30. My first day was hectic with me covering many rounds which was unusual considering we had many doctors.

The unpredictable weather of Alba has been dull since afternoon but didn't let up, I should leave before it does. We are nearing December but its as if we're still in june.

I packed up the doc.u.ments I wanted to go through at home and locked up my office.

Heading down the hall, I greeted the night staffs, some of which wanted to have conversations, mostly the female staff which I politely declined.  I needed to go home and rest.

Reaching my car the clouds finally let up pouring down heavily. I hurried into my car and drove off.

I couldn't stop my mind from wandering to a certain brown eyed girl.

I've tried to ignore the stirs I get  in the pit of my stomach whenever I end up thinking of her or the few times I met her. I blame everything on d.e.s.i.r.es of the flesh because I have not been intimate with a woman for awhile.

Anne's a beautiful woman, I cannot deny that but she looks like trouble. Gut feeling. That's why I acted all rigid around her.

Speak of the devil or in this case, think of the devil and it will appear. Right under the bus stop stand was the girl in my thought holding an umbrella that was doing little to protect her from the downpour.

Without hesitation,  I swivelled my car and packed infront her.

I could see her tense up before relaxing on recognizing me. She was shivering from the cold.

"Anne get in." I said opening the door.

She hesitated a little before complying.

"Thank you doctor,"she said with her teeth chattering.

I turned up the heater and pulled out of the bus stop. She visibly relaxed.

"For a moment there, I thought you were going to refuse."

She gave me a quick glance and I could almost hear her head working on a reply.

"Honestly,  I had wanted to but who would I be kidding. Its almost ten o'clock and I was under the rain, half of my body soaked and catching serious cold. I couldn't let the chance of getting a ride out of the rain pass me by...," I smiled internally at her honesty. "and besides, if I had wasted time, we would have been swimming in rain water inside your car."

I chuckled at the last part and she stared at me like I just grew another head.

"What?"

"I didn't know you had it in you to smile talk more of laughing."

I didn't know how to respond to that.

"Well, you've not known me for that long."

Now I know why she and my brother got along. She's easy going when she's not mad at you. Speaking of which, the hostility she directed towards me during the time at the hospital seemed to have vanished. As if reading my mind, she said solemnly

"Am sorry doctor for my behavior towards you, I acted based on false belief.  During the time you dropped me off at my hostel, I thought you had the intention...mm.."

"Its ok Anne, its all in the past now and you can call me Vincent."

She smiled sweetly and my breath hitched. Sweetly? Where did that even come from.

The rest of the drive was in a comfortable silence.

I pulled up infront of her hostel and bid her farewell. She thanked me again and went down. The rain has reduced to a drizzle allowing her move without her umbrella that I think was made for babies.

I watched her run into her hostel,  jumping over potholes filled with water.

I couldn't stop myself from smiling as I drove home.

She's interesting.

Anne's pov

I took my bath, got into my night gown and laid on my bed. I had wanted to read but I was so exhausted.

Pamela and Jane were already fast asleep which was unusual. They must have had a hectic day like me.

Me and my partner with the help of nurses collected test samples that we ran under the strict supervision of the lab scientists, running errands for them that includes buying their lunches. It was stressful but worth it, we got to learn alot.

I passed Vincent once or twice in the hall way and that man is one fine specimen. His scrub fitted him, outlining his toned arms and c.h.e.s.t. Yes, I stared that long. Even during the car ride, he was wearing a white collared shirt which showed the movement of his muscles as he steered.

Phew, God took his time to create those brothers.
