Our Hearts Beat For Anne

Chapter 6 - Sparks

Anne's pov

We had test today in school, so the lecture hall was filled to the brim with students including individuals who were giving admission but have not attended class for once, they're known as 'non acadas.'

It was a general course so many departments offered it.

It was so stuffy but we had no choice than to settle down and write the test.

We all settled, with people sitting, swatting, standing, leaning, at different parts of the hall. They test scripts were shared with much difficulty by the make-shift invigilators who were Students in higher levels.

Halfway through the test, a ruckus started at the back of the hall. Students began screaming and running in different directions, tripping and falling on one another.

Books, pen, phone, test scripts went flying in all directions.

"Cultists!!!," someone screamed causing more frenzy and pandemonium.

I leap to my and joined the struggle.

It was hard to move with the confused crowd.

People were being pushed and stepped on. Everyone wanted to pass through the two big doors at the same time.

I was almost at the door before someone stepped on my slipper causing me to miss a step and land on the floor.

Fortunately for me, I fell on a place that had few people and I wasn't stepped on but I was gasping due to the rush and I got less air. It made me lightheaded. The last thing I saw were two of my besties who were making their way towards me before everything went dark.

I awoke to the smell of bleach. 'Freaking hospital.' I stretched and sat up on the bed. A nurse was scribbling away on her chart or whatever that square thing was called. She looked up "hey, how are u doing?"

"Am fine. Just a little headache."

"Your friends brought you here because you fainted."

'Great.'

"Don't you worry though, you'll be out of here in no time. We just need to run some more tests."

"Thank you nurse."

"Welcome. The doctor will be here shortly to check your vital signs, so relax and I'll get you aspirin for the headache."

With that, she exited.

A few minutes later, the doctor walked in.

It has been three weeks since that incident with the drunk guy but I could remember everything vividly.

This was the same guy that dropped me in front of my hostel and tried to give me money in exchange for my silence. He was coming towards me, his face buried in the charts the nurse must have given him.

He stood in front of me in all his male goodness.

Yes, he was handsome but who cares. He tried to bribe me.

"Good day miss Anne, am doctor Vincent, I hear you had a rough day?" He said looking up. He stiffened when he recognized me.

"Yes doctor." I replied coldly.

He stared at me for a couple of seconds before going back to the chart.

"You have just a few scratches and bruises, nothing serious. How are you feeling?"

"I feel fine doctor. Please when can I leave?"

I know I was talking harshly to him but he was not showing any signs of being affected. I guess he gets that from rude patients here, so, his kind of used to it or pretending to be.

"Soon miss Anne, I need to check your vitals."

He removed his stethoscope from his neck, put it in his ear, opened the first two buttons of my shirt and placed the other end on my c.h.e.s.t.

Goose pimples rippled down my body when his fingers made contact with my skin. My face heated up. My body was reacting weirdly and I didn't know why. I guess I was repulsed by his touch. That should be it.

After checking my heartbeat, he placed his fingers on my lower eyelid and drew it down. He did the same on the other eye.

His hand on leaving my face mistakenly touched softly on my lips and I could have sworn it lingered there, but with the way I was feeling, I could easily blame it on my imagination.

"When the results are out, you should be free to go, good day." He said and walked out.

I just sat dumbfounded. I couldn't decipher my feeling. Happy that my body has stopped its weirdness or sad that the doctor didn't show any form of emotion. Acting like a robot.

My thoughts went back to that moment in the hallway when he held me. He was totally different. Well, guess he gets like that when it comes to family. That thought alone annoyed me.

I was discharged shortly and I made my way to the exit.

On reaching the door, it flew open and hit me on my head. I fell flat on my b.u.t.t.

"Oww!!"

"Am so sorry miss, I didn't. ..."

I looked up at the owner of the voice and froze.

'You've got to be kidding me.'

He froze too and just stood there.

"Excuse me?"

"Oh sorry! " he said and helped me up.

"Thank you."

I moved past him and went outside. He followed.

"Wait miss please."

I stopped and turned.

"What?"

"I know what I tried to do to you was very wrong and I sincerely apologize! Please forgive me. I have been searching for you for a while now. Please permit me to make it up to you."

"No need for that, i have forgiven you."

"Please, I need to make it up to you, for my own peace of mind.come with me please."

"And what makes you think I will follow you anywhere? Just let me be."

"Am sorry but I have been going crazy over everything. I know am no saint but I have never gone that far before and its eating up on me. Please...we'll stay in an open place so u'll feel safe."

I actually pitied him.

"Ok."

I just hope I won't regret it.
