New World's Empress

Princess Sora became solemn. She knew they had quite difficulties. The prices were ridiculously high. But, to eat grass, how comes? Impossible

"You are bit exaggerating with grass. I know that prices in our city are crazy. But..." She saw Xiao Ran shaking her head and standing up.

"Big sister is awake. Ask her." She wanted to explain more, but knew that she will trust only Liu Mei's words.

Liu Mei opened her eyes and yawned. "How long have I been asleep?" She was wide awake and felt full of spirit and vigor.

"Two sticks of time. Not long. Want to walk a bit with me?" Princess Sora knew her already.

She would occasionally take a nap and after that will have a surge of energy. Mostly she would go for a walk. They went to the place where two old horses were and sighed. "They are too old."

Liu Mei patted one of the horses and smiled. "They are strong and even if they are old, they deserve to live comfortably in their last days. They worked enough. I bought enough dried grass and millet for them, so I'm not worried."

When Princess Sora heard that she pointed at the grass in her garden. "While we talk about grass, Xiao Ran told me a ridiculous story."

Liu Mei turned her head towards the grass and sighed. "You mean about your people that are eating grass?"

Princess Sora became serious. "Yes."

She suddenly felt a hand on her arm. Liu Mei pointed at horses. "Let's take them for a walk. They need it now and then." She must show it to her. It was not even hard as they were often outside to bring the horses to walk and they would see people often in fields trying to gather as many wild vegetables and herbs.

Princess Sora had simple clothes and Liu Mei as well. As the weather became a bit windy, they put warm hats on their heads and rode out the town. The summer was almost gone, so the first gusts of fall appeared often. Rain, clouds and wind were now more and more pronounced.

These two horses might be old but were well fed and treated the best in the last weeks, so they had lots of energy. As they left the town and open prairie could be seen.

A few smaller bushes and a bunch of grass made the prairie look like a green sea.

Liu Mei smiled brightly. "How pretty. Too bad your people don't cultivate your land."

They were famous for their stocks of sheep and goats. And for horses. But only a small amount of people used the land to grow crops as it was hard and summers were short.

Liu Mei was still astonished as she saw the cities. How did they become wealthy enough?

''How comes your people have food if you don't grow anything near the Capital?

"We have farmers that are on the southern border. The summer here is too short to grow anything." She saw Liu Mei coming off the horse and touching the ground. She pulled the grass up and dug a bit the earth. With a sigh, she pointed at the dark earth and a vein popped on her forehead, making Princess Sora became fl.u.s.tered.

Liu Mei was usually calm and warm, but right now she looked like she wanted to beat up someone. "Calm down. What is it?"

"What... is... it? You must be kidding me? How long do your people live in this city? When was it built?" Liu Mei assumed at least a few centuries.

"Father chose to make the city here as he liked the prairie about twenty years ago. The capital was for centuries somewhere else. What is it? Why are you so angry?" Princess Sora became now worried as she saw Liu Mei's face becoming red.

Liu Mei, on the other hand, rubbed her temples and was trying to calm down her anger. "Tell me more about people that work for your father."

"You mean nobles and ministers?" Princess Sora saw her nodding.

The two let horses freely grass and just sat down on the horseseats that they took off the horses.

The more she listened about the ministers surrounding the current Emperor, the more she found it ridiculous. The Dalan Empire was sometimes bothersome, bit Bai Empire was just ridiculous.

If he chose to come and take over this land, it would be so easy. Nobles did what they wanted. Some paid taxes some took taxes for their own spending.

Ministers were more there to argue about ridiculous things, not considering Empires people and luckily only the army and Generals were completely under Emperor's control, or they would have split this country a long time ago into small pieces.

"Emperor only by name. He must start cleaning his surroundings soon, or his people will die. I'm not kidding. Do you know why I am so angry?" Liu Mei grabbed dark earth and put it into her hand, surprising Princess Sora.

"Why? What is wrong?" She held the earth in her hands and blinked in wonder at Liu Mei.

"This earth is so good, it can feed everyone. No wonder there are so many machinations about surrounding land. Nobles do not wish that the Emperor finds out about this. Look. With this earth, your people can produce so many good things. If you prepare seedling before winter ends, you can grow enough food. Someone is doing this on purpose to destabilize the whole country. Be careful. I will tell you how to make this land into heaven. Listen..." Liu Mei started explaining and the more she spoke the more Princess Sora was amazed.

"We can have them all?" They usually brought all those things from the southern part of the country.

"You can grow them only once, but with such good earth, it will give enough food for people to survive winter. Look, you have a river nearby so even irrigation wouldn't be hard."

She was flabbergasted by the whole situation. How comes no one made farm in such good land, but earning money seems was the main reason. The horrid prices were perfect for the nobles to become even richer.

Suddenly Princess Sora jumped as she saw a whole group of people walking in the grass and gathering stuff. Impossible...
