Choice of survival

————————

“Rudy, are you okay?!”

“It hurts, but I’m fine.”

Responding to Naomi, Rudy staggered to his feet.

In a distant place, the fallen demon writhed in agony on the floor.

His skin was inflamed in several places, emitting white smoke and the sizzling sound of burning flesh.

If it weren’t for the demon’s head undergoing regeneration, he would have healed instantly with his superhuman recovery abilities. However, he had to prioritize the regeneration of his head at the moment, leaving the healing of other areas for later.

Naomi mentioned that he defends against physical attacks with his body hair. Can I take him down now?

Rudy stared at the struggling demon attempting to stand up and took a deep breath to compose himself.

With his short sword at the ready, he engaged his accelerated electronic brain and entered the zone.

In a slow-motion world, only Rudy moved.

Approaching the motionless demon, he swiftly slashed with his short sword, as if performing a quick-draw technique. Then, he slipped behind the demon and sheathed his short sword.

As the zone ended, the demon’s body froze.

His torso began to shift, and his body split in two, with the lower half remaining upright while the upper half collapsed to the floor.

“It’s over.”

“…”

Rudy spoke in a nonchalant tone, but Naomi’s brain struggled to comprehend the current situation.

What was that just now? It was so fast I couldn’t see anything…

Rudy disappeared, and in an instant, he was standing behind the demon. It’s hard to believe, but he seems to have cut it in an instant.

But the opponent was that demon. Physical attacks shouldn’t work… And that sword, it’s abnormal…

“Rudy… What on earth are you…”

“Despite appearances, I’m quite strong.”

Rudy shrugged his shoulders and joked, which made Naomi’s slight fear towards him dissipate.

That’s right. No matter how strong he is, Rudy is still Rudy. He’s a boy older than me, who came from a distant universe, speaks in a funny manner, and is skilled at cooking.

“Ah, that was impressive!”

Naomi responded with a smile, and Rudy smiled back, winking at her.

“What do we do next?”

“I’m hungry. Let’s go back to the base camp.”

Rudy was not only exhausted from the intense battle but also starving to the point of feeling like he would die.

“You eat a lot for someone with such a small body.”

“It’s just how my body is now.”

Rudy grinned in response to Naomi’s exasperation.

“Are you going through a growth spurt?”

“I have a lifespan of 500 years, you know. Ten years is nothing in terms of growth period. Angel coefficient… Angel? No, not that. Engel coefficient, it’s too high.”

“Engel coefficient?”

Naomi tilted her head in confusion, not familiar with the term.

Rudy started walking towards the air duct, intending to leave the storage room.

“Wait, what about that?” Naomi called out, pointing at the fallen demon’s corpse on the floor.

“Bury it in the ground with the drone later.”

“It’s burnt, but it could fetch a good price as a material.”

“…Can something like that be sold?”

Rudy raised an eyebrow upon hearing it could be sold.

“It’s a demon material known only from ancient texts. It could fetch a fortune, and you could even commission someone to make your own equipment out of it.”

Rudy pretended to ponder Naomi’s explanation and consulted with Hal through his electronic brain.

“What do you think?” he asked.

“The current equipment is superior,” Hal replied.

“In that case, we don’t need it,” Rudy concluded.

“I’ll have the drone collect a small sample of its cells later. We won’t need anything else.”

After finishing his discussion with Hal, Rudy turned to Naomi.

“I don’t need it. I’ll give it all to you, Naomi.”

“You’re the one who defeated it.”

“Besides, I don’t have any connections for selling it. And it’s not good to draw attention.”

Saying so, Rudy crossed his arms and made a pouting face.

“Well… if I sold such a material, I’d become a celebrity in no time.”

“You’re acting like you don’t want attention while doing attention-seeking things.”

Naomi smiled and thought for a moment at Rudy’s words.

“Hehe, you might be right. If you don’t want it… Huh?!”

As Naomi was speaking, she felt a shock on her back.

Confused, she looked at Rudy, who was surprised and staring at his own abdomen. So, she also looked down.

For some reason, claws were growing from her own abdomen.

“…urgh!”

Nails tore out from Naomi’s abdomen, and she collapsed to the floor, coughing up blood. By her side, the upper body of the demon, whom they had thought was dead, lay.

The blood-drenched claws that had stabbed her were pulled out. Despite still being in the process of regeneration, the demon opened its mouth wide, ready to devour Naomi.

For years, the demon had been absorbing mana from the air within its cocoon, channeling it all into its regenerative power. As a result, even in death, it could briefly come back to life.

And instinctively, it knew that by devouring the vast amount of mana Naomi possessed, it could even resurrect its lower body.

“Naomi!”

The demon attempted to consume Naomi’s head with its mouth, but before it could, Rudy’s kick landed in its mouth.

The demon, having been hit by the flying kick, sank its teeth into Rudy’s right leg. However, Rudy’s sturdy shin guards and boots prevented it from tearing through.

Acidic saliva began to dissolve Rudy’s shin guards, emitting white smoke and the sound of burning.

Gah! My leg is burning! The pain shot through Rudy’s face.

Despite the pain, Rudy paid no mind and lifted the bitten leg, stomping the demon’s head into the ground.

Repeatedly, Rudy stomped on the demon’s head until his right leg finally came loose from its mouth.

Rudy gripped his shortsword with both hands and continued to stab the demon’s torso relentlessly, until it breathed its last.

“Huff… huff… It hurts…”

Rudy took ragged breaths, trying to steady himself. His right leg had been scorched, with his shin guards and pants melted away, leaving his skin blistered by the strong acid.

Enduring the pain, he checked Naomi’s condition. She was still alive, but the bleeding from her abdomen was severe. Judging that she would die from bleeding and shock if left untreated, he made his decision.

“Hal, we’re evacuating Naomi.”

“Yes, Master. But wouldn’t it be more convenient for your existence if we let her die and hide it?”

For a brief moment, Rudy wavered at Hal’s suggestion but shook his head, discarding the thought.

“No, we’ll keep her alive. She’s… my friend.”

“Yes, Master. I’ll prepare a cart to transport Naomi. Please wait here.”

“No, I’ll carry her to the cockpit. It’ll be faster that way.”

“Master, your injuries are quite severe.”

“I won’t die.”

Rudy stated firmly and lifted Naomi onto his shoulders.

“Damn! It’s quite painful.”

The weight of Naomi pressed against his burnt right leg, causing him to grimace in pain.

Nevertheless, determined to save her, Rudy began to walk.
