Chapter 13: The Door Couldn’t Open

At this moment, the sun had already set, and nightfall had arrived. The restroom was quiet, with only the occasional sound of flowing water. Zhang Li chose a stall. With her palm pierced by the glass, her movements were hindered. She struggled inside for quite some time, and her discomfort was aggravated by her clumsy actions. She was used to being pampered like a princess at home, and she had never experienced such frustration.

“Ahhhhh!” Zhang Li yelled in frustration in the restroom, venting her annoyance.

Suddenly, the restroom lights momentarily went out before quickly coming back on. Zhang Li didn’t pay it much mind at first. However, soon after, the lights in the restroom began to emit crackling sounds, as if something was disrupting their normal functioning. The lights started to flicker intermittently, creating an eerie atmosphere.

“Trash! They can’t even keep the restroom clean.” Zhang Li was not accustomed to using public restrooms. She considered them dirty and associated the cleanliness of the restroom with the competence of the janitor. Frustrated, she muttered quietly, “I’ll complain about the janitor when I leave. They can’t even manage such a simple task! They should stick to cleaning, those dirty and exhausting chores!”

After her outburst, Zhang Li swiftly straightened her dress and attempted to push open the restroom door. However, it remained stubbornly shut, resisting her efforts. She exerted more force, but still, the door wouldn’t budge. It seemed as though something was obstructing it! Damn it! When she entered the restroom, she was the only person there, and no one else had entered since. How could the door suddenly refuse to open?

Reflecting on the events of the day, Zhang Li’s anger surged within her. “It’s all because of that despicable Fu Xiaoya! Jinx! She shouldn’t think that Qin Huaichen helping her once makes her superior! That one million-plus, I will make her cough it up sooner or later!” Frustrated, she lashed out and kicked the door, only to hurt her toes and grimace in pain, while the door remained unscathed

Zhang Li twirled in pain, but then with a sudden thud, her phone fell right into the toilet bowl.

“Ahhhh!” Zhang Li, paying no attention to the pain in her foot, let out a loud scream. She watched as her phone dropped into the squat toilet, slowly submerging in the water and going black. The sight only fueled her anger further. To make matters worse, the lights, which had been flickering intermittently, suddenly went out completely. The entire restroom was now shrouded in darkness, with only a faint green glow emanating from the nearby emergency exit.

In the darkness, one’s hearing becomes more acute. Zhang Li heard the sound of footsteps approaching the entrance of the restroom, but it was an odd sound as if the footsteps never touched the ground and were walking on tiptoes…

“Is it the janitor? Open the door quickly! Be careful, I’ll report you!” Zhang Li’s tone was unpleasant as her footsteps echoed, sometimes getting closer and sometimes moving away. She felt like someone was pacing inside the restroom. After a while, the heavy footsteps stopped, followed by the sound of the restroom door opening and the mop hitting the door frame. It made a clanging noise, seemingly undisturbed by the darkness.

Zhang Li felt that the restroom doors on both her left and right had been opened, except for her own cubicle. And the person she was speaking to didn’t respond, ignoring her. Who would be working in the darkness without acknowledging someone?

“Who are you? What are you?” Zhang Li’s voice trembled slightly as she couldn’t help but recall the horror stories she had read. She had heard that ghosts walked on tiptoes and could see things even in the darkness.

Her voice reverberated in the restroom, but the person still didn’t answer. Whether it was her imagination or not, Zhang Li felt that the person was getting closer and closer to her…

Various horror TV shows and movies echoed in Zhang Li’s mind, causing her limbs to go numb with fear and a chill to run down her spine. It was so dark, she couldn’t see anything. She curled up into a ball, pressing her back against the wooden wall, her heart pounding in her throat.

“Is… Is anyone there?” Zhang Li’s voice trembled with fear as she tried to seek help. She wanted to reassure herself that ghosts didn’t exist in this world, but the events unfolding before her rendered her reassurance useless.

Suddenly, a hoarse singing voice filled the air. Someone outside was singing while dragging something, its voice raspy and ethereal, as if something was obstructing its throat. In the darkness, it sounded particularly eerie.

Zhang Li clutched her clothes tightly, her fright tightening her vocal cords. But she mustered up the courage and said, “Who are you? Don’t think you can scare me with these tricks. I’ll give you a chance. Release me, and I won’t hold you accountable for scaring me.”

Suddenly, the noise outside ceased. The sound of dragging and footsteps disappeared as if it were all just Zhang Li’s imagination.

Several minutes passed, and the silence outside remained. Zhang Li’s tense mood finally eased slightly. She moved her stiff body, contemplating how to escape from this situation.
