E/D: Spirit Song

Though the distant mountains had yet blocked out all of the last rays of sunset, the chilling moonlight had already started to shine. Though twilight had yet to pass, dark clouds had already covered the rosy sunset shade, appearing just like small little black clumps, that gradually stained paper through with its colour.

The red glow of the setting sun perfused through the lands, staining the mottled white walls of the house, as well as the exquisite face of the young girl by its side.

Ning Ning stood alone by the side of the small house, pondering for a while, before speaking out in an extremely soft murmur: “Then I’ll… go in now.”

No one gave any reply to the words she spoke.

That included the system in her mind that had disappeared after providing her with the mission briefing.

Okay.

Ning Ning wrapped her clothes tightly around her body in the chilling night, before extending her hand out, pressing her palm gently on the brown coloured door.

The entire process of how she ended up here in the first place was an utter accident for her.

After all, regardless of how it was, something like being thrusted into the world of a novel that she had read before could never be classified as “something to be expected”.

The novel’s title was “Sword breaks through the heavens”. From the plain and simple chinese words, it could make people feel a simple and unsophisticated quality to it. Furthermore, it was refreshingly catchy, and yet the title didn’t do anything to hide how refreshing it was.

This was coupled with its storyline, which fits the title to a tee. If one wanted to summarise this novel into points, it would most probably be done in 4 points:

Point 1, “Reincarnated immortal dreams about his own Life Sword”.

Throughout the entire novel, the main male protagonist Pei Ji was the reincarnation of a powerful ancient sword cultivator, possessing an immortal sword within his body, granting him extraordinary potential.

Although he didn’t retain the memories of his past life as a sword sovereign, he would depend on his incomparable talent and hard work to carve a path for himself, and finally become the number one sword cultivator, and rise to become an immortal.

Point 2, “Thousand Years of Loneliness”.

However, as everyone knew, for the sake of embarrassing other people in a counterattack, the main characters of such simple novels would always have a miserable life in the earlier chapters, like having a poverty-filled upbringing, or loss of cultivation which resulted in being substituted. This novel was no different from those in the same genre.

Pei Ji was the son of a demonic cultivator and a mortal woman. Like a seed-sowing machine, his father had a one night stand with his mother, before disappearing without a trace, and did not even appear at all throughout the entire novel.

After giving birth to the so-called “b̲a̲s̲t̲a̲r̲d̲ child”, Pei Ji’s mother naturally didn’t treat this child, who had destroyed her purity, well. Therefore, she would frequently treat him as a substitute to demonic cultivators, and subjected him to various kinds of punishments and maltreatment.

Such a childhood would develop and form the lonely, indifferent and malicious character of the male lead. Consequently, he would leave his mother and enter a sword sect, where he would always go about by his lonesome character, devoid of any friends.

Point 3, “Members of my harem wish for me to announce publicly: Geniuses aren’t in love with mind games”.

Pei Ji was a solitary wolf. However, this did not hinder 99% of the female characters within the novel from developing extremely strong feelings for him.

It was said that the male lead character was extraordinarily handsome. Be it the cold and indifferent eldest senior sister of the sword sect, or the charming and bewitching seductress of the demonic way, all of their faces would “unconsciously turn flushed, with their heart rates racing” upon laying their eyes on his handsome face.

Was it exactly due to the fact that he was a walking hot hunk, or that every female character suffered from varying degrees of a heart illness, that in itself was a question that Ning Ning was unable to find an answer to.

The only thing she could confirm, was that Pei Ji would personally crush all of these infatuations apart. In the ending, he had forgotten of all of his mortal connections as he ascended to the heavens. This ending was called, [I’m too grandiose and you all aren’t deserving of me].

Showing off all the way to the Heaven.

Point 4, “Cannon fodders X sacrifice”.

This was an incomparably sad and heavy part.

Ning Ning only wished to wipe away the long shedded tears that streaked across her heart. After thinking about this much, she finally reached the happy old home that belonged to her.

According to this storyline, there would always be countless walk-on cannon fodders that would jump up and down, giving the main characters weapons of destiny, with some teaching him how to improve his sword skills, with Ning Ning belonging to the 3rd kind of characters.

Evil female characters that would constantly unleash bewitching attempts.

The original character was also called Ning Ning, and was the personal disciple of the sect elder Tian Xianzi. She was born into a family of wealthy merchants, and therefore was pampered by her family from birth, which gradually shaped the bad habit of her arrogance and haughtiness.

In the present times, with the flourishing of the imperial dynasty, therein comes the clash and circulation of Martial, Dao, Confucian and Immortal cultivation arts. Ning Ning had entered the Xuan Xu Sect, which was the number one sect in the Way of the Sword.

With her extraordinary talent, she had entered the eye of Tian Xianzi during the great disciple meet, who regarded her as his heir apparent. This master of hers possessed profound strength, yet was solitary in his actions. With Ning Ning included, he had only a mere humble count of only 4 disciples under his wing.

The original owner of the body was successful in her endeavour, even gaining the pampering and doting from the sect, and thus would never imagine the sudden change that would occur today.

The Xuan Xu Sect would host a big meet every spring, where its disciples would compete among themselves to compare their skills. Before the meet, she was brimming with arrogance, and utterly did not place anyone within her eyes. Never did she expect that she would just so happen to bump into Pei Ji as her opponent.

With his impure bloodline, half of Pei Ji’s Sword Intent was suppressed by his Demonic Qi. Therefore, his performance during the sect’s entrance test was mediocre, and thus was relegated as an outer sect disciple.

However, being the lead character, a moment of dire straits was just the precursor for a bout of face-hitting counterattacks. Through his continuous training, Pei Ji gradually learnt how to restrain his Demonic Qi, and unleash his incomparably sharp Sword Intent. This was a secret no one was privy into, with him being the only person that could feel the changes that had happened to his body. With that, he slowly waited for the day he could reverse the situation to spring the trap on his “predators”.

The original owner of this body was precisely that “predator”.

Too sorrowful, really too sorrowful.

If she had used her full strength in the fight, she would in theory not lose.

However, that lady did not regard an ordinary outer sect disciple with any urgency at all, resulting in her only using around 50% of her strength in the fight. By the time she had discovered the outstanding strength her opponent possessed, she was already caught in a helpless situation that was hard for her to extricate herself from.

After losing to him, the little miss immediately exploded.

It was right at this moment that Ning Ning crossed into this world.

According to the storyline, she needed to take step after step into the conventional direction of an evil female character. Not only would she need to continue to court disaster by the side of the male lead, she would also need to act shamelessly and torment the other male characters, keeping that up all the way till the conclusion of the story.

The first step of courting disaster was to head to where Pei Ji lived after the test, and humiliate him right in his face.

The system that had brought her here had said: “Think about this. This is similar to you being the 3rd in the class, but in the final exam of the semester, you were beaten by the person 3rd from the bottom. Would you say that you won’t be angry, and want to take revenge?”

Ning Ning had never been in such a situation before.

She had always got first rank all the year around.

Furthermore, she had never said any swear words since young, much less bully other people.

“You don’t need to have such heavy feelings of guilt.”

The system consoled her: “A villain is also a must have in a storyline! Think about it. If you do not bully the male lead, he would not do his utmost in his training to surpass you; without that all out training, his cultivation wouldn’t improve by leaps and bounds; with his character, if his cultivation doesn’t improve, how could keep his life in this cultivation world? God knows how fast it’ll take for him to kick the bucket.”

At the end, it increased the solemnness of its tone, and added a final sentence: “The proud son of the heavens! The male lead of the story! If he dies because of you not willing to bully him, how could you have the heart to do so?!”

This was simply a fallacious line of thought.

Nevertheless, Ning Ning was still swayed and convinced by it.

After all, according to the storyline, the original body owner’s disaster courting not only didn’t lead to any injury to the male lead, it would also allow him to acquire various kinds of treasures from unexpected turn of events.

In comparison, she would have to eat the bitter fruit, as she would end up in miserable situations throughout every single time.

This was to the extent that after reading the original story, Ning Ning would subconsciously think that as long as the female character started to do evil deeds: Okay, the male lead can act pretentiously and embarrass her any time.

Upon seeing her lukewarm attitude, the system continued to add on: “The most important point you need to understand is that after this mission is completed, I will help you fake your death and leave that body, and start a new life in this world–after dying so easily in your previous life, aren’t you not resigned at all?”

After that sentence, Ning Ning was unable to speak or come up with any more rebuttals.

In her original world, she had passed away from a serious illness.

17 years old, late stage cancer, intense pain racking her entire body as she laid on a bed, unable to move and unable to to speak, with even breathing being a burden for her.

The system wasn’t wrong. She really didn’t wish to die without a purpose so early into her life.

Ning Ning wasn’t an unreasonable person. Immediately, she nodded her head: “Okay boss, thank you boss. I’ll work hard, boss!”

Therefore she finally arrived at the living quarters of the male lead, Pei Ji.
