Chapter 3.2 Braille Teacher (1)

While Sang Wuyan was reviewing the postgraduate entrance examination, she was also busy with her graduation thesis.

By the time of the midterm, everyone was assigned an internship. Li Lulu’s group was transferred to a high security prison on the outskirts of city A for psychological treatment.

“What is a high-security prison?” Sang Wuyan asked curiously.

“It means that there are all prisoners with a serious sentence of over fifteen years.” Li Luluyun replied calmly.

Sang Wuyan immediately stared, “All murderers?”

“Not necessarily,” Li Lulu smiled slightly, “there are also kidnappers, drug dealers, smugglers, and women raping.”

Sang Wuyan’s face suddenly changed. She thought of the “Green Corridor” that she had watched some time ago about how the prison executed the death penalty. The prisoner put a wet towel on his head and then sat on the electric chair. That scene kept her from eating for a few days.

Li Lulu raised her eyebrows: “Fortunately, you pampered girls didn’t go, or you would be frightened.”

Indeed, Sang Wuyan’s group was the easiest and was assigned to a school for the disabled in the community. The school was a bit special, and they were required to officially go over by the beginning of spring.

That day, Sang Wuyan went to hand in the internship form and walked from the office to the playground, which happened to be the children’s second class time. When Sang Wuyan passed a small classroom on the second floor, she heard a sound that seemed familiar.

Then Sang Wuyan saw the man through the window.

He was standing next to the podium in a soft white shirt, looking relaxed. The children were doing homework, and he buried his head and waited silently.

“Teacher Su!” a girl with braids yelled from another place.

It turned out that his surname was Su, and Sang Wuyan smiled lightly and stared at them motionlessly.

His blind cane was not in the classroom, and he moved his hand across a few tabletops and walked slowly to the girl’s side. It seemed that he was familiar with everything here.

The man bent down and said a few words, then squatted down in front of a small desk and continued to patiently communicate with the girl. His voice was completely different from the voice heard in the elevator, it was soft and light, and even made people feel like he was smiling.

Finally waited until the end of the class. When he came out, Sang Wuyan, who had been hiding from the window and peeped for a few seconds, hesitated for a few seconds, and then learned to shout like those children: “Teacher Su.”

He turned around sensitively, his pupils were out of focus, and his eyes seemed to fall far away. He asked: “Do we know each other?”

They had only met once, and she didn’t expect him to remember her.

“I don’t think we know each other.”

He unexpectedly showed a somewhat relieved look when he heard the words, and then leaned on the blind cane in one hand and the handrail in the other to get down the stairs.

Seeing this, Sang Wuyan asked again: “Where are you going? Do you need help?” As soon as the words were spoken, she regretted a little, and she had no intention of showing mercy.

He turned around for the second time, then he groaned slightly, and said slowly: “I seem to have seen you at the radio station.”

“In the elevator.” Sang Wuyan added.

At that time, she kindly said “Do you need help?” The same five words.

Fortunately, he had a good memory, Sang Wuyan thought with pleasure.

“I’m the new intern named Sang Wuyan, how about Teacher Su?”

“Su Nianqin.”

“Nianqing?” Sang Wuyan was quite surprised, so she repeated it again.

“No, it’s Qin.” Su Nianqin corrected her pronunciation.

She was a southerner, and she used to have some ambiguities in the front and back nasal sounds. Because of this, her programs were often brushed down by the director. Now, she could say it accurately, but she still couldn’t hear it accurately.

Su Nianqin seemed to feel her dazedness, so he added: “Jinyi, Qin.”

Jinyi, Qin?

Sang Wuyan smiled embarrassedly, her language was not good and she didn’t recognize what Jinyi Qin was, but she was too embarrassed to ask again, so as not to appear uneducated, she had to pretend to understand.

In the evening, when Sang Wuyan was memorizing vocabulary at home, she suddenly thought of his name. She hadn’t looked through the Chinese dictionary for a long time, and it took a while to find it in a list of homophones.

Jinyi, Qin.

She saw the explanatory note, which turned out to be a quilt.

“Nianqin? It must have been because his family was very poor when he was young, and there was no quilt.” Cheng Yin analyzed boredly from the side.

“What if his name was chosen when he was born?” Sang Wuyan retorted.

“Then it’s probably because his parents were poor before they got married. Chinese parents like to put hope in their children’s names.” Cheng Yin continued her boredom.

Sang Wuyan finally surrendered and stopped discussing such issues with this woman who poured cold water.

Su Nianqin.

Sang Wuyan was lying on the sofa and holding a dictionary and chanted these three words silently, recalling the scene when he was talking to her during the day, and couldn’t help but smile.

He spoke Mandarin well, but he had a little accent on certain fixed words, such as the word “Qin”. He would slightly raise the first and second tone. He should be a local, because the people of City A would blur the first tone in Mandarin into the second or third tone.

“Wuyan.” Cheng Yin interrupted her thoughts.

“What?”

“Hurry up and wipe your mouth, your saliva is almost flowing out of joy.” Cheng Yin said and handed her a paper towel decently.
