I have Nine Lives

Chapter 98: Capturing the village

Felix couldn't see any gate controls anywhere around him and he knew that Landers and the others wouldn't be able to hold on, there was a limit to how many times Landers could redirect their attacks and he wasn't sure if he could recover fully during their cooldown period.

He frowned as he started to look around making sure to not trigger any traps or anything like that, he also had to make sure there were no stealth detectors planted around or his cover would be blown.

He wasn't sure how they looked but he trusted his gut instincts, if he felt like he shouldn't walk by that location maybe it meant that there was a stealth detector placed there.

However, up till now, he didn't get that feeling yet.

He circled the gates but he couldn't find anything at the bottom... which meant there was a chance the controls were up the walls where the guards were currently concentrated.

Some stairs led up to the top of the walls and Felix started to walk towards them slowly, there was no one in view at the stairs nor was anyone climbing them at the moment, all of the guards had been sent up there to help with either manning the canons or they were given some bows so they could shoot the enemies below.

Felix started to climb the stairs slowly as he made his way up, fortunately, there were no stealth detectors put around the stairs and he finally got to the top of the walls.

The moment he appeared at the top he felt that going forward would be tricky, he saw the controls of the gates they were around the stairs in a small tower that looked to be decorative at first glance.

It was guarded even in this situation and his gut told him that stealth wouldn't help him in this situation.

Since he couldn't use stealth he decided to use a diversionary tactic, he shot a few of his claws towards the guards from a tricky angle so they wouldn't know where it came from making them think that they were being attacked by the enemies.

The two guards who were near the controls braced themselves as they took the hits to the chest and stomach, they slowly started to bleed as they clutched their injured parts, even though the claw shots were one of Felix's weaker attacks, the bodies of the fox tribesmen were quite weak to the point that Felix's weakest attack could injure them quite a bit.

The injury wasn't something that would incapacitate them but they would have trouble fighting properly afterward.

The moment they got injured they shouted towards their comrades:

"They have snipers!"

The guards then took cover by jumping down on their bellies however no more attacks came, this also made them stop charging the cannons giving some breathing time to the troops below.

Felix quickly ran towards the controls as the guards were on their bellies and pressed the big button which he guessed would open the gates.

The moment the button was pressed the gigantic gates below started to rumble and move as steam shot out of the hydraulic pumps that worked to open them.

Landers smiled as he shouted:

"Charge!"

Now that the army could charge inside the cannons couldn't be used anymore in fear of injuring the civilians who didn't get to evacuate in time, there were multiple escae routes in the city and Felix used just one of them but the one he used was also the closest and most convenient.

The Foxes knew that fighting here wouldn't give them an advantage but they didn't want to give up and be enslaved like that.

Even though they couldn't use the big cannons anymore they still had their handheld ones which they could use to fight them head-on!

The fight was long and arduous, the foxes fought up for a very long time as they would rather die than being enslaved.

Atleast the army personnel and guard personnel did, they fought with all they had but unfortunately for them, they were severely outnumbered 10:1 as they had around 10,000 people who were fight-ready.

The population of the village was in the hundreds of thousands but most of them were civilians who wouldn't be able to do anything in a fight of this scale.

Felix watched from the top of the walls along with Landers, Lindo, and Manitola as the fighting foxes were killed.

Manitola couldn't take it anymore as she shouted to the survivors:

"Stop this is enough, you have fought well up till now but you are just wasting your lives. Wouldn't it be better if you lived? Wouldn't it be better for your families to see their fathers and sons home and well? As long as you  surrender peacefully the lion army won't treat you badly."

Manitola's words came from her heart, which was being smashed every time she saw one of her brethren die for nothing, in the end, the village would still fall to the lion's paws and all of the deaths would be useless, this was only the first batch of reinforcements from the lion tribe and more were going to arrive as soon as they finished their training along with a prepared officer.

Felix, Landers, and the others were meant to spearhead the invasion as they were some of the strongest warriors of the tribe, the moment they captured a village they would be able to slow down the expansion and use the resources of the continent to expand both economically and territorially.

They could use the resources to buy even better equipment from the human tribe and continue their invasion, at this point the first people who were going to make a base on the continent were going to be the ones who were going to make the most profit.

At this point, the Lion tribe could even break away from the alliance as they didn't need its help anymore.

The first thing they needed the alliance for was breaking through the blockade at the beach but Felix alone had done that quite quickly to boot!

If Landers was honest with himself he didn't really want to be in this alliance in the first place, the Balton and Haron continents couldn't be trusted, especially the Haron one.

So Landers decided to call the headquarters to see about Siracha's opinion:

"Lander's calling, I have a report to do."

Siracha's voice came out of the communication stone as it asked:

"What is it? I hope it's good news."

Landers cleared his throat as he reported:

"We have captured one village on the Sparron continent already and I have wanted to ask you if it's the right time to break off from the alliance."

A burst of jolly laughter could be heard coming from the other side of the communication stone as Siracha replied between the peals of laughter:

"Hahahaha Very good, you have done well Landers, you might be even able to get that general promotion soon, Hahaha."

Landers interjected as he said:

"To be honest I haven't done much, all the credit is due to our little cat, Felix."

"Oho? I thought it would take him some time to recollect himself but he is already going so hard at work? I guess another reward is in order."

"Tell him this, this newly conquered village will be his from now on, he shall be the mayor and leader of the village!"

Landers was surprised, to say the least, he couldn't believe his ears that Felix was the boss of this place now, this was both a huge responsibility as well as a huge gold mine.

If he lorded over this place properly he would surely develop into a mogul of the Sparron continent with his current relationships and connections.

But as he looked at Felix who was still nearby and cleaning his fur with his tongue he wasn't sure if the cat was cut for such type of work.

Landers closed the connection between him and Siracha as they finished talking and he started to take a few steps towards Felix as he said:

"Congratulations, the shaman has decided for you to take care of this village as the mayor from now on, it's a big responsibility."

Felix frowned as he asked:

"Mayor? What does a mayor have to do?"

Landers responded easily:

"Mostly nothing and you get to enjoy 60% of the goods of the region where you are in while the 40% is given to the tribe."

Felix felt a little better, he thought that he wouldn't be able to continue his march with the army through the continent because he became the mayor. But it seemed he thought wrongly.

Landers read Felix's expressions quite easily and he understood why he previously had some aversion towards the mayor rank he had been given. However, if it was a normal person from the army who was given this function as the mayor he would have been discharged so he could do his work as the mayor of the village properly.

But in Felix's situation, he was a hidden blade that the lion army couldn't do without so he was going to enjoy the benefits of the mayor position without doing any actual mayor work as someone else would do it all for him as his secretary.

Landers even got someone in mind already as he glanced down at the army who was finishing with calming the citizens, getting rid of the bodies of the dead ones, and helping the injured ones who surrendered.
