Chapter 8: A Bad Example for the Younger Generation

If it was Jiang Xinghua who was going, she would have been worried.

Mdm Fu said, “I couldn’t believe that Fatty Li really had the cheek to take those pigeons from us. If it weren’t for the fact that I’m doing my confinement, I would have chased her to her home.”

And she even had the cheek to bring up this again?!

How dare she pocket things from her family!

Mdm Fu was furious.

Old Mrs Fu laughed, “Guimei has the combat power to fight all the women in the village. Fatty Li alone would be a piece of cake. She would avenge us.”

After all, she learned it from both Old Mrs Fu and Mdm Fu. She would definitely do well.

Jiang Xinghua heaved a sigh of relief beside them.

Fortunately, she did not have to go.

She couldn’t handle Big Fatty Li at all.

At the Li’s

Fatty Li was delighted to have pocketed four pigeons. She was in for a treat today.

Without another word, she went straight to the kitchen to boil water and defeather the pigeons. As long as she ate them quickly, nobody could take them from her.

After plucking off all the feathers, the pigeons looked even skinnier with even less meat. If she had known earlier, she wouldn’t have put those three back into the sack.

What a loss!

Two to boil the soup in, and two braised. That would be perfect.

Li Fatty took out some precious herbs, including red dates and wolfberries, from the cabinet. She could already imagine how delicious and nutritious this pot of soup was going to be.

It was easy to get one’s hands on chicken soup or pork bone soup. Yet pigeon soup was truly rare.

Only the wealthy drank pigeon soup. A bowl of pigeon soup would cost at least a few hundred copper coins on the market. It was extremely expensive.

She had no idea where Daxing and Erxing had gone to find so many pigeons.

She was in luck.

Just as Li Fatty was going to lower the cleaned pigeons into the boiling pot, Liu Guimei rushed over angrily.

Seeing that there was nobody in the courtyard, she immediately ran to the kitchen.

She was indeed here.

“Fatty Busybody, return my pigeons.” Liu Guimei was out of breath from running and called her by her nickname.

Fortunately, she ran fast enough. Otherwise, the pigeon would have been eaten.

Fatty Li had a guilty conscience and jumped at Liu Guimei’s words. The knife slipped out of her hands and dropped onto the floor with a loud clang, nearly slicing her own foot.

“Guimei, how can you scare me like that? The knife almost chopped off my foot.”

Getting a grip of herself, Fatty Li hurriedly covered the exposed pigeons with her pot lid and turned her back to block them from Liu Guimei’s view.

“If you hadn’t pocketed my pigeons, why would I have scared you! Do you think I have nothing better to do?”

Liu Guimei felt like chopping her up. If she couldn’t kill her, she could at least cripple her.

This way, she would not be able to go anywhere and would only stay home. This would save many from her gossip and her pocketing tendencies.

Liu Guimei didn’t care about acting recklessly. She stomped over and rummaged through the cabinets roughly, looking for the pigeons. When she saw the pot lid, she snorted.

She knew that the pigeons were there.

Just as she was about to lift the pot lid, Fatty Li stopped her. “Liu Guimei, you’re going overboard! Is this how your mother-in-law has taught you?”

Liu Guimei has always despised her tendency to take advantage of her seniority.

And now, she even dared to bring her mother-in-law into the picture.

“If you hadn’t pocketed my pigeons, why would I be here? Do you think I have nothing better to do? As for my mother-in-law, she won’t be as gentle as me if she does come over personally. She might even smash your kitchen.”

She was not joking. Fatty Li had witnessed Mdm Fu’s combat power first-hand many times.

She had always lost.

Fatty Li looked resentful.

“Also, Fatty Auntie, don’t forget the moral codes of being a decent human just because you are old. If you don’t set a good example for your descendants, they will turn bad too.” Liu Guimei fired like a machine gun, her words like ruthless bullets. “Oh, wait, I take my words back. You don’t have any grandchildren.”

Fatty Li was obviously losing. She could only capitalize on her seniority. “Liu Guimei, young people are supposed to have manners. After all, I’m your elder. How could you talk to me with such an attitude?”

“I will match my manners to whatever the person deserves.” Liu Guimei rolled her eyes.

It’s ridiculous that she still expected her to treat her with respect after she had pocketed her items

How shameless.

“On the other hand, Fatty Auntie, you’re snatching my family’s possessions in broad daylight. Even bandits need to look up to you.”

Four pigeons at one go. She was indeed shameless.

“Why did you have to say it in such a way? It’s not too much for me to treat these pigeons as a gift from Erxing for saving his life when he was young. Back then, I was the one who saved him from… Otherwise, how could he have lived on and get married and even have children now? How could you have married into the Fu family? Liu Guimei, you should be grateful to me.” Fatty Li’s glib tongue was utilized to the extreme.

Instead of exploding in anger, Liu Guimei scoffed.

Grateful?!

How absolutely shameless.

“Fatty Auntie, let’s cut to the chase. I just want to ask, do you remember who pushed Erxing into the water?”

It was Fatty Li’s daughter, Li Cuicui, who did it.

During their childhood, Li Cuicui insisted for Fu Erxing to agree to marry her when they grew up. When Fu Erxing declined, Li Cuicui pushed him into the stream angrily.

Fu Erxing was highly traumatized by this experience after his near-drowning experience. Mdm Fu had told her all about this.

Her daughter had nearly killed him, yet she still had the cheek to claim credit for saving his life now.

“If you hadn’t saved Erxing back then, your daughter Li Cuicui would have been torn into a million pieces by my mother-in-law.”

Liu Guimei kept bringing up Mdm Fu, which caused a lot of pressure on Fatty Li.

Because her family was indeed in the wrong for this matter.

“Also, when I married Erxing back then, you created a lot of trouble for me.”

Liu Guimei would never forget this even until her death.

Back then, Fatty Li had slandered Liu Guimei so that Li Cuicui could marry Erxing instead.

This was especially so after she found out that Erxing was dating her. She would spread rumors about her, saying that she had a nasty character and was lazy… Anything that would tarnish her name.

Her words nearly cost her marriage.

Even now, she was still badmouthing her to others from time to time.

Fatty Li was rendered speechless.

Seeing this, Liu Guimei lifted the pot lid and grabbed the four pigeons.

She had defeathered them well.

She sneered and said, “Thank you, Fatty Auntie, for helping us clean the pigeons so well. Be it people or things, it’s better not to involve yourself with them if they’re not yours.”

Fatty Li saw that pigeons were about to be taken away but did not have the courage to snatch them from her outrightly. She could only be thick-skinned and said, “Liu Guimei, your family caught so many pigeons. Just leave one for me.”

Dream on!

Liu Guimei retorted on the spot, “Fatty Auntie, your family has a lot of money too. Why don’t you give us some money?”

Fatty Li’s expression hardened.

She had really taken after Mdm Fu. Her words were as sharp as a scythe.

Seeing the red date and the other herbs on the stove, Liu Guimei took all of them down together. These would go well with the soup.

Fatty Li panicked, “Put them down. Those belong to my family.”

She had just said one shouldn’t take things that don’t belong to them. How could she have the cheek to do just that?

Liu Guimei said self-righteously, “Fatty Auntie, Erxing’s old illness had relapsed because of you. It’s not too much to take these herbs for his nourishment. If he doesn’t recover, our family will come back here to ask you for medical fees. You’d better pray that he recovers quickly. Otherwise, my mother-in-law will definitely be the first to settle the score with you.”

Not caring how angry Fatty Li was, Liu Guimei left in high spirits with her hands full.

Her plan had backfired. Instead of enjoying some pigeon meat, she had even lost her herbs.

Mdm Fu was her nemesis, and so was her second daughter-in-law.

Fatty Li was so angry that she slapped her chest.

At the Fu’s

Jiang Xinghua stood looking around beside the door. Why wasn’t Liu Guimei back yet?

She wondered if the pigeons could be retrieved.

Suddenly, her eyes lit up. Not far away, Liu Guimei returned triumphantly like a victorious knight.

“Liu Guimei, you’re really amazing.”

Hearing the praise, Liu Guimei couldn’t help feeling proud and said, “Of course, I was trained by Mother. How can I let her down?”
