Chapter 37: The Conflict Resulting From Anger

Liu Guimei was counting money in her room. She held an extra 100 copper coins, which she had easily fleeced.

This would surely hurt Fatty Li’s pocket!

Then, she heard a series of laughter coming from the central room.

Those sounded extremely ear-piercing to her.

Instead of figuring out how to earn more money, they were wasting their time playing with Fu Xing’er.

Did they really believe money just appeared from spending time with her?

Suddenly, her sharp ears caught fragments of the conversation coming from the central room.

“Dear, our harvest this time is at least tens of thousands of catties of food. Shall we store half of the food at home and sell the other half?” Second Fu asked.

“Isn’t it too early to discuss that?”

Mdm Fu would only feel confident of making such plans when she could see the actual harvests.

Overwhelmed by the marvelous news of the bumper harvest, she still felt like she was dreaming.

“It’s not too early. We can start harvesting the crops tomorrow. No, we can start later this afternoon. They have all matured.”

Second Fu was also worried that they might be happy for nothing.

He would only feel at ease when the harvests were complete and confirmed.

He planned to harvest them as soon as possible.

“Half of it will be enough to sustain our family for a long time. We’ll sell the rest for money and build up our emergency savings.”

He had finally been able to stop borrowing from the other villagers. It was a deeply embarrassing experience for him.

For all these years, their Fu family had been so poor in the village that they couldn’t even hold their heads up with pride.

“Are we really going to sell them? Or should we store them all, just in case?”

Mdm Fu was still a little worried. Though the harvest was good this time, what if the harvest next year turned poor again?

If they were to store all their harvests this year, they could rest assured that they would not go hungry for the next few years.

As the head of the family, she was truly worried about poverty hitting the family hard yet again.

“That’s not necessary. We might have a new species of rice next season. If we store so much this time, won’t we have to eat the old rice for the next few years?”

With the confidence that he had gotten from Fu Xing’er, Second Fu was sure that things would definitely turn out well.

Mdm Fu couldn’t help but laugh. Look at how smug he was!

In the past, it was already a miracle if they had any harvests at all, let alone having extras to sell.

Mdm Fu hesitated, but Second Fu couldn’t contain his excitement. “Come on, dear, don’t you see what’s happened? Our dead rice crops came back to life! It’s like we didn’t have to pay anything for this harvest. And we’ve got Fubao now, so what are we afraid of?”

In the neighboring room, Liu Guimei was pressing her ears on the wall intently,

listening to their conversation.

Shock was written all over her face.

What?!

The dead rice crops came back to life?! Ten thousand catties?!

Was he joking?

Then, she heard Fu Erxing’s voice. “That’s right. With our lucky star Fubao, the situation at home will definitely get better. We should use the money to hold a grand one-month-old banquet for Fubao!”

“Alright, alright. Do whatever you want.” Mdm Fu agreed immediately.

It was rare to see her husband and two sons on the same page. She would go along with their wishes.

Liu Guimei was so angry that she smacked the wall.

Fu Erxing was brainless!

Instead of saving the money for their son, he actually wanted to use them on Fu Xing’er’s one-month-old banquet?!

Is he crazy?!

Why would they hold a one-month-old banquet for a girl?!

No one in the village had ever done it before.

Did they think that they had too much money?!

Liu Guimei muttered a thousand disagreements in her heart. Immediately, she dashed over to the room, flung the door open and exclaimed, “Father, Mother, I don’t agree to us selling the harvests.”

She would rather stock up on food at home and eat more than ten meals a day than spend it on Fu Xing’er.

Her appearance immediately dampened the atmosphere in the central room.

“What are you doing here?!” Fu Erxing said angrily at the sight of her. “Hurry up and close the door. Do you want Mother to catch a cold?!”

Liu Guimei closed the door quickly and walked over shamelessly.

She seemed to have forgotten the trouble that she had caused when she drank the pigeon soup yesterday.

She immediately said, “Father, Mother, our family has been poor for so many years. Food is a necessity to every household. If there’s any natural or man-made disaster, it’s always good to be prepared. It’s better to be safe than sorry.”

There was a reason why the family didn’t want to see her.

They were happily chatting about the one-month-old celebration just a few seconds ago, but she ruined the atmosphere with her words as soon as she arrived.

The expressions on Second Fu and Mdm Fu hardened.

Why must she get herself involved in everything?!

Would it kill her to not stir up trouble at home?!

“Nobody will forget you have a mouth if you don’t use it all the time!” Fu Erxing was furious. “Father and Mother will call the shots in this family. It’s not up to you. If you have nothing to do, go and help Xinghua with the chores!”

Jiang Xinghua had been so busy the entire morning that she had not even had the chance to sit down to rest. Whereas for Liu Guimei, all she did was to slack off or to stir up trouble in the family.

Ignoring Fu Erxing, Liu Guimei continued, “I’m just speaking the truth. Our family has grown crops for so many years, but this was the only time when we had a good harvest. Shouldn’t we stock up on food at home? It’s fine for us adults to starve, but our children are all growing. Look at Xiaoma, he is malnourished and much shorter than his peers.”

If she didn’t say anything, they would have given everything to Fu Xing’er.

Again?!

“Stop using our son’s name to suit your agenda. If you had fed our son with as much food as what you usually ate, he would have grown taller.”

Fu Erxing was tired of her bringing their son into their conversations for her own benefit all the time.

“Don’t worry, Guimei. Even if I have to starve, I won’t allow my grandsons to starve. However, we will still be holding Fubao’s one-month-old banquet for sure.” Mdm Fu’s tone was firm and resolute.

She didn’t give her a chance to say no at all.

She knew very well that Liu Guimei was worried that all the money would be spent on Fu Xing’er. While Mdm Fu doted on her daughter, she wouldn’t forget about her grandsons either.

She had already planned to give Daxing and Erxing a portion of the money after selling the crops to buy some necessities for their own children.

On the other hand, Liu Guimei had to jump in anxiously.

She was as narrow-minded as a needle.

Liu Guimei lowered her head and bit her lip, her heart filled with resentment.

Mdm Fu had always closed her eyes to her actions, but Liu Guimei had been pushing her limits more and more.

She had to teach her a lesson this time.

She gathered her authority. “As long as your father-in-law and I are still around, we are still in charge of this family. Even Daxing and Erxing didn’t say anything, so who are you to speak?!

Even if the family was poor, when had we ever starved you or Xiaoma?

Didn’t I also give you money from the sale proceeds of the pigeons and firewood yesterday? When did I ever forget your share?

You won’t find another mother-in-law who gives money to her daughter-in-law like I do!

Go ask around and see if there’s another daughter-in-law in the village who doesn’t help out with household chores or bring in money to support the family. Just look at Xinghua and then look at yourself!

All these years, you’ve been slacking off whenever you can. Xinghua has been magnanimous, so I didn’t say anything. But, you’re getting more and more overboard!

Also, you kept talking about your son, but what have you done for your son?!”

Liu Guimei lowered her head even more.

“Also, I’ll put this upfront today: Fubao is the only daughter in the family, so I will definitely dote on her!!! What is wrong with that?!”

Liu Guimei bit her lips and clenched her fists tightly, looking unconvinced.

“Dear, don’t be angry. Don’t get sick from anger.” Second Fu spoke.

Mdm Fu was really angry at how Liu Guimei was still causing so much trouble and disrupting her rest when she was supposed to be in confinement.

“Mother, don’t be angry.” Fu Daxing patted her shoulder.

He looked relieved. Fortunately, his own wife was unlike Liu Guimei at all.

“Why are you still standing here? Go and help Xinghua with the chores!” Fu Erxing exclaimed.

Fu Erxing was so angry that he really wanted to beat her up again.

Liu Guimei left angrily.
