Chapter 28: Two Peas in a Pod

She even brought along three little ones. No, four little ones.

She was even better than her at taking advantage of their parents.

Liu Guimei believed that her third sister was the main person responsible for depleting her parents’ financial reserves.

Every time she came back to her parents’ house, she would bring at least one of her children along.

Mdm Song massaged her aching head and frowned as she watched her granddaughters running around her courtyard. It was so noisy that her headache intensified.

Why can’t she have even a day of peace?

Both her daughters were extremely enthusiastic about getting free food from her, taking turns to come to her.

They would not stop until they had sucked her dry.

“Well, I’m going to give birth soon. By then, I won’t be able to come by to visit you for a long time until after my confinement. I will definitely miss you very much, so I will come by when I still can.” Liu Guihua walked over with her big belly and said cheerfully.

Liu Guimei pursed her lips in disdain.

What an excuse!

They lived in the same village and their houses were mere walking distance from each other.

“Guihua, just say it honestly that you wanted to come back to freeload. If what you just said was true, Mother would have been sneezing dozens of times a day.”

She knew very well that her third sister also had her thoughts on their mother’s retirement money.

Among the four sisters, she was the one who freeloaded the most from her parents’ house.

They had a huge advantage with their headcount.

Madam Song felt a chill down her spine.

It’s not true that her daughters missed her. The only indisputable truth was that they were all after her retirement money.

In any case, all four of her daughters were money-hungry freeloaders.

“Guimei, we’re two peas in a pod. Let’s not start that.” Liu Guihua sat down with difficulty and said with a smile.

Liu Guimei turned her head away and snorted.

Liu Guihua waved at her daughters. “Girls, come over! Come greet your aunt.”

They surrounded Liu Guimei. “Hello, Youngest Aunt.”

All three of them called in unison.

They all looked pale and thin. They were skin and bones. They wore the look of typical undernourishment.

They had a dull complexion from head to toe. Their clothes were laden with holes, and their toes were peeping out from their torn shoes.

They looked exactly like beggars.

It was not that they were pretending to be poor. They were truly, really poor.

Liu Guihua’s in-laws had several sons. With them married and with their own families, the house was filled with people.

Her other brothers-in-laws had sons, but she only had daughters. This made her status in her in-laws’ family very low.

Naturally, their basic needs were barely met.

When the two sisters sat together, Liu Guimei exuded an energy that was visibly better than Liu Guihua.

Liu Guihua was thin, almost bamboo-like in her thinness, while Liu Guimei still had a bit of visible fat on her body.

Otherwise, Liu Guihua wouldn’t have come to her parents’ house for meals once every few days.

She would be so starved of nutritious food that she would eat everything she could find at Madam Song’s house.

Liu Guimei responded to the children lazily. She didn’t really like her nieces.

There was no other reason than that they were also little freeloaders who continuously feed on the reserves of her mother quickly.

Now, they were snatching food from her again.

“Granny, I want to eat steamed buns.”

“Granny, I’m hungry too.”

When they saw the steamed buns on the table, their eyes lit up like hungry ghosts. One by one, they cried that they were hungry.

They reached their hands out to take them.

Liu Guimei swiftly extended her arm, smacking their hands as she exclaimed, “Those are mine.”

Liu Guimei was no pushover, but these little troublemakers almost managed to outmaneuver her.

“Remember: first come, first served.”

Even though she did not like the steamed buns herself, she did not want them to have them too.

As soon as she finished speaking, Liu Guimei was pulled back by Madam Song. “Aren’t you being embarrassing? How could you still snatch food from children as an adult?!”

With that, she grabbed the steamed bun from Liu Guimei’s hand and distributed it to the three girls.

She even had to grab the half-eaten steamed bun from her mouth and distribute it too for there to be enough.

Liu Guimei’s eyes widened threateningly in annoyance.

The girls hid behind Madam Song in fear.

D*mn it.

They would even snatch steamed buns from her.

They had done this many times in the past too.

Liu Guimei was so angry that smoke was almost coming out of her nose.

Liu Guihua pretended not to see this.

“Mother, is there anything else to eat at home?” Seeing her daughters gobble up the steamed buns one by one, Liu Guihua felt her stomach growling too. She said, “This child here is hungry.”
