Chapter 13: Old Mrs Fu’s Days are Numbered

Fu Xing’er was stunned.

Mdm Fu was amused.

Second Fu scratched his head in confusion and asked, “Dear, what are you laughing at? Isn’t Fubao hungry?”

Mdm Fu didn’t want to dampen his enthusiasm and answered, “Yes, yes, yes. Go to the kitchen and fetch some goat milk to feed her.”

Fubao was probably hungry after peeing so much.

Second Fu warmed the goat milk and brought it over. He insisted that he feed her himself.

From now on, he would strive to do everything that is related to his daughter’s needs, so as to raise his daughter well.

Mdm Fu was happy for him to share the load.

It was fine as long as he was willing to do it. Even if he could not do it very well, she would encourage him and not dampen his enthusiasm.

Second Fu held Fu Xing’er in his arms stiffly, his entire body tense.

His daughter was as soft as cotton and not sturdy like little boys. He had to be extra careful.

Fu Xing’er immediately felt the difference as she was held in his arms.

Why are the limbs of my undependable dad so stiff? They’re not at all like mother’s, who were soft and comfortable.

He held her like he was holding a piece of priceless treasure.

He did not even dare to breathe. A thin layer of sweat could even be seen on his forehead.

He was extremely nervous.

It was understandable. She was the only precious daughter in the family.

This extraordinary treatment was not something that any other could get to enjoy.

Second Fu scooped a spoonful of goat’s milk, his hands trembling so much that he almost spilled it.

Mdm Fu couldn’t stand looking at his state and said, “Old man, relax. You’ll scare Fu Bao if you’re so nervous.”

Fu Xing’er blinked her big eyes.

This indicated her agreement.

Even her breathing had quickened with Second Fu’s nervousness.

“Then I’ll relax.” Second Fu took a deep breath and imitated Mdm Fu’s usual posture of holding and feeding her. His limbs gradually relaxed.

If his dear could do it, so could he.

“Fubao, eat your fill,” he said in a doting tone as he held out the spoonful of goat milk to her mouth.

His face was filled with overflowing fatherly love.

Fu Xing’er sucked cooperatively.

“Yes! My daughter is drinking the milk I fed her.”

Second Fu was so excited that he loosened his grip.

Fu Xing’er slid off his lap instantly.

What! The! Hell!

Is this some kind of a slide?!

Mdm Fu, who had been keeping a close eye on them, was scared out of her wits and jumped forward. “Fubao!”

Second Fu was quick to react. He leaped and caught her securely, pulling her into his arms in a bent position. Mdm Fu’s hands were also ready beneath them.

The couple heaved a sigh of relief upon their success in catching her.

They felt as if their lives were halved from the shock.

Fu Xing’er was so shocked that she cried loudly, “Boohoo!”

My dad is indeed undependable!

I don’t want him to feed me anymore!

She had almost lost her life to him.

Mdm Fu was so shocked that her face had turned white. She hurriedly carried her back. “Fubao, hush hush, don’t cry. It’s all your daddy’s fault. Mommy will scold him.”

Her murderous glare pierced Second Fu, almost turning him into a hornet’s nest.

In the future, she would never let him hold their daughter again. No, she would not even let him touch her.

How undependable!

At this moment, Mdm Fu was so frightened that her limbs were limp and her entire body was cold.

She held Fu Xing’er in her arms and coaxed her while humming a soothing tone.

The warm and comfortable embrace slowly dispersed her shock.

Fu Xing’er cried until she was sleepy.

She fell asleep.

“Fubao, I’m sorry! I’m sorry! It’s my fault.” Second Fu was so shocked that he was covered in sweat. His heart had almost stopped beating.

“You, go stand over there.”

Mdm Fu pointed at the wall and commanded him to move aside.

Second Fu didn’t dare to disobey and followed, throwing glances at them from time to time.

He was so angry at himself.

He had almost killed his extremely precious daughter.

After the shock from Second Fu, Fu Xing’er could not sleep well.

She jumped awake as soon as she was placed down.

Mdm Fu had no choice but to pick her up again and walk around. She hummed a lullaby and coaxed, “It’s okay. Mommy is by your side. Fubao, you’re good. You’re Mommy’s little sweetheart…”

After a long while, Fu Xing’er was finally able to fall into a deeper sleep without waking up easily.

As he waited for Mdm Fu to be done, Second Fu faced the wall and cried hard.

Guilt had encapsulated his entire heart. He was a prideful man, yet he cried uncontrollably.

He was not worthy of being his daughter’s father. He could not do anything well.

He had done wrong to his daughter!

“Stop crying. It’ll be so embarrassing if your grandsons or daughter-in-laws come in and see you. If that happens, you’ll lose your dignity as the head of the family.” Most of Mdm Fu’s anger had dissipated. “Wipe your tears and turn around.”

Although she was angry at him, she couldn’t throw his dignity down the drain.

Second Fu turned around with his head lowered.

He was too ashamed to face her.

They had been living together for so many years, and this was the first time that she had seen her husband cry like this.

She was both angry and amused.

“Dear, I’ve done wrong to our daughter!”

Second Fu looked up and his gaze instinctively landed on Fu Xing’er, who was lying on the bed. An additional layer of guilt formed around his eyes.

Tears streamed again.

Mdm Fu’s lips twitched.

He’s crying like a woman.

She had never seen him like this before.

“Hurry up and wipe your tears. How embarrassing.” Mdm Fu threw a handkerchief at him, and Second Fu used it to wipe his face.

Just as he was about to walk closer, Mdm Fu shot him a look that stopped him in his tracks. “Just stay by the side and not do anything for the next few days.”

She did not dare to let him take care of her anymore.

She would rather do it herself and be a little more tired, than let him shock her again if he had taken it on .

Second Fu nodded hard. His wife was not the only one who doubted his ability. He doubted himself too.

He stood in his spot and looked in their direction with his neck stretched out like a giraffe. Mdm Fu found it amusing and said, “You could come closer to look. How are you going to take a proper look all the way from there?”

Second Fu came over eagerly and sat down.

He felt terrible looking at his daughter’s tear-stained face and swollen eyes.

A while later, Jiang Xinghua brought over tea-time snacks. “Mother, have a bowl of bone porridge.”

When Liu Guimei and her were doing their confinement in the past, Mdm Fu had prepared at least five meals for each of them every day.

“Oh yes, have you sent some to your Grandmother?”

Old Mrs Fu was in high spirits and had the greatest appetite today in the longest time. Hence, Mdm Fu also asked Jiang Xinghua to prepare a portion for her in the future.

She had said that she didn’t mind eating less if there wasn’t enough food to go around. It was more important for Old Mrs Fu to eat.

It was too rare to see Old Mrs Fu’s appetite improve. She hoped that her health could improve upon having nutritious food and resting for a few days.

“Yes, I did. Grandma just woke up and has a very good appetite. She said that she would come over to see Fubao immediately after she finished eating.”

As the saying goes, One would be in high spirits when one encounters a happy event.

Indeed, Grandma’s illness was mostly cured after today.

However, upon hearing Jiang Xinghua’s words, Second Fu couldn’t help but sigh.

His mood dampened.

After her Jiang Xinghua left the room, Mdm Fu couldn’t help but ask, “Old man, what’s wrong? Mother has such a good appetite now. Shouldn’t you be happy?”

Yet, he looked deeply troubled.

Second Fu wore a heavy expression as he choked, “Dear, I’m afraid that Mother’s days are numbered. It could even happen in the next few days.”

“What! Stinky old man, what nonsense are you talking about! She can eat, drink, and sleep well. It’s not possible for something to happen to her.” Mdm Fu felt that he was getting delusional.

How could he curse his own mother like this?!

Old Mrs Fu looked full of energy today. At least ten folds better than usual.

“Dear, it’s not like you don’t know how Mother’s health was like previously. I suspect that this is her going through terminal lucidity.”

Mdm Fu paused.

She fell into deep thoughts.

At her age, she had seen many people pass on.

There were visible signs to tell when a person is going to die. Those who usually could not eat or drink would suddenly be able to eat and drink a lot. Those who were usually bed-bound would suddenly get out of bed and walk.

And Old Mrs Fu had checked all of these on the list.
