Chapter 8: Selling Ginseng

“Since all the children want to go, why don’t you come with us too.” Su Hu was also pleased.

To tell the truth, he had no confidence in selling ginseng in Furong Town alone. More or less, he could strengthen his courage with his wife and children following.

“Okay, it’s settled. Let’s go home and change clothes. We will leave immediately.”

Li Xiu’e was a little tempted. She had been married in Woniu Village for many years but had gone to town only a few times. She wanted to take the opportunity of selling ginseng to walk around in the bustling market for a while.

“Let’s play in town!”

Su Qiao’er and Doudou got their parents’ permission. One after the other, they ran down the hill happily. Their clear and sweet laughter was soothing to the ears.

“After selling ginseng, we can buy some cloth to make some new clothes for the children.” Li Xiu’e was full of joy as she held her little baby girl.

“You should also make yourself new clothes. Don’t be stingy. I feel that our family will improve with Yuyu around.”

Su Hu carried the basket, looking forward to the good days of abundant clothing and food, with a longing face.

“Yes, we will. We will live a better life.”

Li Xiu’e lowered her eyes and glanced at the little baby girl who had closed her eyes and was drowsy. Her heart was touched.

The couple returned home. Li Xiu’e took out a few semi-new clothes worn at Spring Festival from the cupboard for the whole family to change into.

Before leaving, she carefully replaced the silk quilt wrapping Yuyu with their rough quilt and carefully closed and locked the doors and windows. Then, she and her husband each carried a bamboo basket. Followed by children, they crossed the river by boat and went to Furong Town by a donkey cart.

The Qilian Mountains were vast, with mountain after mountain, and the road was rugged and uneven. To go out of the hills and reach Furong town from the other side of the river, one had to turn a dozen turns on the narrow mountain road.

Furong Town was the largest town in the villages around. Although not much prosperity, it was located at the mountain foot of the famous Foshou Temple. As a result, a steady stream of worshippers brought thriving businesses to the small town.

Su Hu already had a plan since he dared to take his family with him to Furong Town. The best-reputed of the town’s pharmacies was the century-old Kong Shan Hall.

With a hundred years old of ginseng hidden in his back basket and a business in his mind, he was not in the mood to shop first. As soon as he got off the donkey cart, he ran to the pharmacy with his wife and children.

“Sir, you are here. Do you want to take medicine or see a doctor?”

When the family crossed the threshold of the pharmacy, a young fellow greeted them with a smile and a polite greeting.

“Excuse me, how do you sell ginseng here?”

Li Xiu’e came up with a brilliant idea. Instead of stating her intention immediately, she beat about the bush and inquired about the price of ginseng.

“Madam, do you want to buy ginseng? Or do you want to sell ginseng?”

The young assistant was resourceful and guessed the couple’s intention from their dress and attire.

“To sell ginseng.”

Su Hu was honest and a terrible liar. He revealed their intention all at once.

“Ahem.”

Li Xiu’e stepped on his foot with a love-hate expression.

“Selling ginseng! Big brother, then you have come to the right place. Our Kong Shan Hall is a hundred years old. The reputation is guaranteed. Sell to us. You absolutely will not lose.”

Seeing business had come to the door, the young fellow made a more significant and warmer smile.

“Give us a rough price. We’ll discuss it in detail if we feel it appropriate.”

Compared to Su Hu’s honesty, Li Xiu’e was more or less business-minded and would not be easily set up.

The young fellow was a bit embarrassed. “Well, it’s hard to say without seeing the ginseng.”

Li Xiu’e’s eyebrows twisted. She was a little unhappy. “How is it not easy to say? Do you want to mark it up as you like?”

“Madam, please don’t be angry. We will never do anything to entrap our customers.”

The young fellow could not resist her retort. He kept looking at the inner hall with a helpless expression showing in his eyes.
