Chapter 27: The Scene Looked Funny

“Boohoo, Boohoo.”

Sensitive to her hesitation, the little baby pursed his lips in protest and cried again.

“Hey, hey, don’t cry. I’ll hug you.”

Su Qingluo had a moment of panic. She subconsciously extended her small body forward and took him into her arms.

The small baby was lighter than estimated and was as light as a newborn civet cat cub. Qingluo had no problem holding him in her arms.

The poor little thing. Poisoning had dragged his body down.

While breathing a sigh of relief, she was flooded with a wave of sympathy. She jumped off the carriage, carefully held him in his arms, and blocked his eyes the best she could, not allowing him to peek at the bloody scene.

The soft little body of the baby was trembling slightly, his little hand clutching her lapel. The little face was covered with teardrops, pressing close to her heart.

The fragrance belonging exclusively to the little girl unintentionally floated into his nose with a hint of attractive sweetness.

He sobbed, took a few deep breaths, and finally stopped crying under the soothing, intoxicating scent.

Su Hu dragged the injured woman into the carriage when the little fledgling drove the horse back and lassoed it.

Seeing that the carriage was ready, Su Qingluo held the little ball and jumped on the front carriage. “Father, get Mother, Sister, and Brother over here. Let’s go in this carriage.”

“Okay.”

Su Hu habitually trusted his daughter, so he agreed without hesitation and brought Li Xiu’e and the children back in a short while.

Li Xiu’e, Qiaoqiao, and Doudou all looked frightened. They walked across a field of dead bodies. Their legs and feet were still weak from terror.

Qiaoqiao covered her eyes, not daring to look at the scene. Thanks to Doudou’s help, she didn’t trip over the corpse.

After they got into the carriage, Su Hu jumped on it guiltily, whipping the whip and tugging on the reins, trying to drive it.

Su Qingluo sat beside him with the little baby, vigilantly observing the surrounding movements.

The little kingfisher flew down from a low altitude and landed on the horse’s head, chirping crisply to command the horse to move forward.

Hearing its command, the horse neighed and raised its front hooves, clattering forward.

“Whoopeesh.”

Su Hu breathed a sigh of relief and mimicked the coachman by whipping the horsewhip a few times in the air before quietly wiping away the cold sweat on his forehead.

The horse clattered forward under the command of the little kingfisher. They drove smoothly into Mingshui County before the city gates were closed for the night.

Mingshui County was at the foot of a hill and near a river. The tributaries of the Wei River flow from the foot of the mountains outside the city. The river also had diversions within the county, and the entire county was built along the river.

There were semi-circular stone arched bridges and weeping willows everywhere, along with the flowing river, making for a very picturesque county.

Su Hu drove his carriage into the county, not caring to enjoy the city’s beautiful scenery. Instead, he asked the residents for directions and drove to the most famous medical center in the county, Jishi Hall.

There were beds for the temporary placement of patients in Jishi Hall. With the help of the assistant, Su Hu carried the unconscious woman into the backyard, paid the consultation fee, and left her there temporarily under the doctor’s care.

Directly across the street from Jishi Hall was a small inn. The couple discussed and made a decision to stay at the inn to facilitate contact with the doctor and care for the injured woman.

The inn was not large, with only two floors and ten rooms.

Su Hu drove the carriage directly into the backyard, leaving the horse under the bartender’s care. He asked for three empty rooms, prepaid for three days, and led his family to the second floor behind the bartender.

Su Hu shared a room with Doudou, Li Xiu’e with Qiaoqiao, and Su Qingluo with the little baby.

Because Su Qingluo had her little secret, she insisted on staying in a room alone since she could speak freely.

Su Hu and Li Xiu’e had always spoiled her and agreed to her every request, so they also gave in to her wishes and let her sleep alone.

The scene of a five-year-old girl holding a smaller baby looked funny.
