Chapter 23: Go to Furong Town

It was not easy to go to the county with the whole family. Li Xiu’e made preparations early. On the way, the children might want to drink water when they were thirsty, eat when they were hungry, need umbrellas when it rained, change clothes when their clothes got wet, and need ointment to stop bleeding if they got hurt.

Li Xiu’e had prepared a lot of things, which filled her basket and Su Hu’s, and there were some items that she failed to put in their baskets.

Before leaving, Qiaoqiao and Doudou had to carry a basket on their own. Even Yuyu carried a small basket with small things she might need.

On the second day of the summer vacation, Su Hu’s family got up early, closed the doors and windows, and locked them. They told the village head that they were leaving. Then, they crossed the river by boat, went to the neighboring village, took a donkey cart, and embarked on the journey to Mingshui County.

The three children, who had never been far away, were very excited. They laughed happily on the donkey cart. Their happy faces were like the morning sun, brimming with youthful vitality.

When adults heard the children’s laughter, they could not help smiling. The adults became much happier and felt more energetic.

When Su Hu and his family arrived in Furong Town, they didn’t dare to stop and didn’t have a rest. They immediately got on a carriage for Mingshui County.

The carriage was much bigger than the donkey cart. One carriage could seat 10 people. Each passenger needed to pay 15 copper coins for the fare, no matter children or adults.

A five-year-old girl like Yuyu had to pay the same fee for occupying a seat.

Su Hu took out 75 copper coins and gave them to the owner of the carriage. He then got on with his wife and children. When 10 passengers got together, the driver waved his whip skillfully and started the carriage immediately.

At noon in the hot summer, the carriage was clattering forward. The back compartment was stuffy and hot. Even though the door curtain was wide open, it was still very hot in the compartment.

Su Qingluo had to beg her mother for a long time before she got her mother’s consent to sit out of the compartment on the front shaft. She felt much cooler because of the wind after getting out of the compartment.

The little girl, who was only five years old, wobbled her short legs and enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the way, giggling happily.

In the forest ahead, birds suddenly flew away in fear and circled in the sky.

Su Qingluo got nervous. She seemed to hear the sound of swords, the painful neigh of horses, and the frightened cries of women and children.
