DoM – Chapter 59: Hell’s Kitchen Holidays

Misty looked at Alvin suspiciously and said, “What? Sprint for the college entrance examination?”

Old Professor Cage, seeing irrelevant people coming in, without waiting for Alvin’s reply, said impatiently: “Yes, this is the sprint class for the 12th grade of the community school, Miss Police Officer, if you are here for dinner, just wait a few days. Or have our little Jessie pack you some of her cookies and get out of here. Hell’s Kitchen doesn’t need you cops much these days.”

The unceremonious tone of old Professor Cage made Misty a little unhappy. She was about to shout loudly, but she was stopped by police officer Michael who appeared out of nowhere.

Michael smiled embarrassedly at Alvin, as if to say that his children were ignorant, please forgive him! Then he ran to the bar to grab a cup of coffee, handed it to Misty, and dragged her out of the restaurant.

Outside the restaurant, Misty looked at Michael with a half-smile and said, “Officer Michael, if I remember correctly, you should be patrolling the streets now, why are you here, the college entrance examination sprint class?”

Michael didn’t like Misty very much and felt that she acted too impulsive. It wasn’t a big problem, and it was sometimes even seen as a sign of self-motivation. But that didn’t work in Hell’s Kitchen, where no one was afraid of the police.

If the NYPD were to vote for the cleanest police department, it would have to be the one in Hell’s Kitchen. Because the corrupt police couldn’t live here for a month at all.

In the past year, the living environment of the Hell’s Kitchen police had improved a lot. If the gangsters here did not encounter them, they wouldn’t find trouble with the police. When the police were handling a case, these guys would run away and fight back, but they wouldn’t show up anymore afterward. In the past, it used to be that the whole policeman’s family was killed.

A character with a bit of identity would follow them back to the police station in a big way and then call their lawyer. This made it a lot easier for the police in Hell’s Kitchen to handle cases.

Michael liked the current working environment, but he didn’t like Misty’s style of handling cases. She was indeed very capable, but she couldn’t skip the case-handling process and go to other people to find trouble. Follow the procedure, collect evidence, file a case for investigation, and prosecute in court.

In this way, those vicious gangsters wouldn’t come to find trouble, and at most, when lawyers were useless, they would find a younger brother who wanted to stand out as a scapegoat.

But she, Chief Misty, insisted on skipping the procedure and looking for trouble. Michael was worried about when she would be shot. Michael didn’t care that much about Misty’s life and death, he was just afraid that Hell’s Kitchen would return to the chaotic and disorderly state a few years ago, and that would be terrible.

Michael looked at Misty and said, “Director Knight, what Professor Cage said just now is not very pleasant, but it’s true, there won’t be anything on the streets these days, we can relax, and my son is In grade 12 this year, I am doing the final review with him and preparing for the ATC exam in two days.”

Misty looked at Michael seriously and said, “Why? Tell me, why can an old man tell me that the police are useless these days? Do these garbage gangsters care about the college entrance examination and even make way for it?”

Michael spread his hands and said seriously: “Yes.” Seeing Misty’s expression of disbelief, Michael explained helplessly: “Alvin has set these days in June every year as the sprint week for the college entrance examination and asked all gangs to keep quiet these days.”

Misty looked at Michael like a fool and said, “Can you believe such a bizarre statement? When did those gangsters become so easy to persuade?”

Michael sighed softly and said, “Director Knight, you’ve been here for almost two months, but you haven’t found the most critical place that can affect Hell’s Kitchen.”

Seeing Misty still confused, Michael said with some headache: “Schools, The community school, that is the most special place in Hell’s Kitchen. There, people in Hell’s Kitchen see hope for another life.”

Misty was a little confused. There were community schools everywhere, but why were they different here? She could vaguely feel the reason for this, but it was not very clear. She was not born here. She had only been here for more than two months. She didn’t know what Hell’s Kitchen was like in the past. She was unable to understand some of the thoughts of the people here.

Michael knew that it was not completely clear, and Misty, the stunned director, didn’t know what trouble she would get into.

Michael said patiently, “Do you know the Jamaican drug dealer on 37th Street, Pluto?”

Misty nodded, she listened carefully, she thought she might have found the key to Hell’s Kitchen.

Michael said: “His son is in the twelfth grade this year, and his grades are very good. Professor Cage wrote him a letter of recommendation. If the ATC test this time is not too bad, his son will be able to enter Columbia University with a good learning environment. Pluto paid a high price, negotiated with other drug dealers, and moved all the drug trade elsewhere. Of course only in these few days.”

Misty looked at Michael in surprise and said, “Why? Is the ATC exam that magical?”

Michael shook his head and said, “People here have never seen the hope of getting rid of their current life, but the community school has given them hope that their children can go to college and take a different path. Pluto is not the only person that thought so.”

Misty motioned to continue talking.

“The son of Alexei, the weapon’s dealer, has been invited by many universities because of his football skills. If he can get good ATC grades, he could even get a full scholarship to USC. Alexei is crazy. Now, he has sent all the younger brothers to the streets to maintain law and order, and let it be said that as long as others can stop for a few days, they could buy weapons from him at a 10% discount in the future.”

Michael looked at Misty and said sincerely: “Every year in the future, these few days will definitely become the most important days in Hell’s Kitchen. Whoever makes trouble these days will suffer bad luck. This is not a joke.”

Misty finally had a clear understanding of the abnormal situation on the street, looked at Michael, pointed to the restaurant, and asked, “What’s going on there? Why are there only so many children? The twelfth grade of the school should have a lot of students, right?”

Michael looked at the restaurant and smiled: “Those children are in special circumstances, there are drug addicts in the family, or their parents have domestic violence. Alvin gathered them in the restaurant and provided them with food and accommodation so that they could feel at ease preparing for the exam in two days. I also sent my son here because there are two highly respected professors who can help my son.”

Speaking with a bit of pride, Michael said, “My son got a 31 in the mock ATC test. Professor Wilson is willing to write a letter of recommendation for him. He will have the opportunity to enter the Ivy League.”

Looking at Misty thoughtfully, Michael sincerely pleaded: “Director Knight, really, don’t make trouble these days, these days are Hell’s Kitchen holidays!”
