Brother

“Mianmian, come and have dinner.”

    Madam Yu knocked on the door outside the room. Yu Mian rubbed her eyes and sat up from the bed in a daze and replied, “Okay, Mom.”

The rain outside the window was pattering and the sky was gloomy. Lying on the soft and warm bed, she fell asleep at some point, and the afternoon passed unknowingly.

    When she woke up, her mind was still in daze. Looking at the strange room in front of her, Yu Mian fell in a trance of not knowing where she was.

    Before leaving, Mrs. Yu said again: “Brother is back tonight, MianMian hurry up and come down quickly.”

    Yu Mian blinked, slowly woke, up, following the word “Brother”, Some fragmentary memories popped up in her chaotic mind. The man face in the memory was blurred, fragments were broken, and there was only a rigid and thin shadow.

    In the original owner’s impression, the man has a cold face, body full of vigor. He rarely comes home, and rarely talks to his sister, leaving her a indifferent back at most.

    Yu Mian thought about it carefully, and found that in the original memory, the image of this elder brother was really too poor. She only knew that the other party was eight years older than her and took over the family business. His personality was cold and unkind, expect that she knows nothing else.

    There is also a short story behind this poor memory. As said before, Yu MianMian stayed with her grandparents in their hometown when she was young, and her brother followed their parents to start the business. Afterwards, Yu MianMian was taken to the city after their family business flourished.

    But when the original owner came back, she resented her family very much, thinking that they had abandoned her when they left her in the village alone. After returning home, her personality changed drastically. Her parents was apologetic and wanted to make up to her. But it was a bit late, she already turned into a rebellious girl.

    Once Madam Yu served the original owner with soup, the original owner did not appreciate her mother’s effort, she swept away the bowl of hot soup, which sprinkled on Madam Yu’s body, causing to form blister.

    At that time, the original owner was still young, and when she saw Madam Yu exhaling in pain, she was dumbfounded in panic.

    At that moment, Yu Xing stood up and called someone to deal with the injuries of Madam Yu, then walked straight to her, pulled up the original owner and pushed her out of the door. The original owner clearly remembered that it was a rainy day. It was torrential rain. The brother who she was never close to, coldly said: “You stay her and reflect on what you did.”

   On that day, Yu Mianmian stood in the rain for two hours. Even if it was early summer but the rain water was cold, making her face pale and stiff. This incident resulted her to stay bedridden for two consecutive days because of the high fever.

    From that incident onwards, the original owner was afraid of her brother. Every time Yu Xing went home, she would find excuses to hide. She didn’t want to meet him. Even if they met, she didn’t dare to look up at him. Even when Yu Mian recalled this memory, she still couldn’t remember his face.

    Going through the old memories in her brain, she doesn’t know if it was affected by the emotions of the original owner, or the brother in her memory looked fierce, that Yu Mian suddenly became nervous.

    She climbed off the bed, stepped on a pair of fluffy pink rabbit slippers, gently opened the door, and walked down the corridor to the stairs that connects the living room with the first floor.

    Far away fron the spiral staircase, she noticed that the atmosphere in the living room was different. After lunch, she and Madam Yu sat on the sofa to watch idol dramas. The atmosphere was more relaxed and harmonious than now. Even though the TV on the wall is still turned on, but there was sign of laughter or any conversation.

    Yu Mian slowly approached, and the picture on TV came into view. It turned out to be a financial news channel, and the host was giving the news with a  straight face.

    Yu Mian: “…”

    As she approached, the person on the sofa was also revealed, a straight silver-gray suit, the suit was ironed extremely neatly, as if there was a meeting to be held here. Perceiving her arrival, the man looked over with his deep eyebrows, bottomless black eyes.

    Her footsteps stop abruptly, Yu Mian instantly understood why the original body was afraid of this brother!

    The aura is too strong. This is one of the reasons. The other is this person’s eyes, which are extremely cold, like some unworldly creature watching the earthly world as if they have nothing to do with it, with the ultimate sobriety and indifference. There is a kind of feeling that he can see through anyone staring at him.

    This kind of eyes appears to know everything, when looking at you silently, it seems that in his eyes, your whole body is stripped naked, with no secret to be left behind.

[ T/N:- I had a trouble translating this part and not to mention Yu MianMian’s description! Oof how much afraid is she exactly of him?! ]

    Yu Mian almost wanted to turn around and leave. She was not the original MianMian, rather her soul occupied this body. She still had a little guilty conscience. You Mian being stared at by these eyes, were making her extremely uncomfortable.

    Yu Mian almost moved one step at a time, facing his probing gaze, finally stood in front of him, tried to hold the corner of her mouth, and greeted him in a low voice: “Hello, brother…”

    Yu Xing looked at the trembling girl. He squinted his eyes lightly, and noticed that the girl shaking without her consciousness, because of her subtle movements. Her small face was getting pale, and a slight doubt arose in his eyes.

    On the phone, his mother happily told him that when his sister Yu MianMian came out of the hospital, the whole person became a lot more sensible.

    Originally, he didn’t believe it. How could he not know what Yu MianMian’s character was. She had quarreled with their parents before moving out of the house, and it was impossible for her to change overnight.

    But when Yu Mian really stood infront of him, he was suddenly a little confused. He heard that Yu Mian’s heart stopped beating for a minute in the hospital. Could it be that walking before the hell can really make such a big change?

    In the past, Yu MianMian was very rebellious, and the negative thing is that her personality was extremely gloomy and indifferent. Yu Xing already made up mind that she will become a disaster in the future.

    But looking at the girl infront of him, standing timidly, her head faced towards the floor, with a plain face without any makeup, her face was gradually becoming paler with his silence. Her eyelashes fluttering like a leaf in the wind, trembling in fear.

    She was just as afraid of him as before, but it made people feel different. In the past, she was afraid of his authority. Yu Xing always believed that if one day she had the power to resist him, she would definitely retaliate against him without hesitation….

    To put it more bluntly, the previous Yu MianMian was like a hedgehog, with an aura of bitterness and enmity lingering around her body, as if the whole world has wronged her.

[ T/N:- Please both the siblings are so dramatic ! *Rolls eyes ]

    Now, that gloomy indifferent aura is gone. The girl’s skin is pale and her eyes are clean and clear, looking at his eyes with both fear and vaguely novelty, like a young deer born in the forest, looking at the world with curiosity and fear. Plus in the past she would never take the initiative to speak to him, let alone greet him.

    “…Yu Mianmian?” The man’s voice was biting cold.

    Hearing her name being called, Yu Mian subconsciously responded : “Huh?” 

This natural reaction didn’t seemed to be replaced, it was the same MianMian, his sister. Yu Xing thought nonchalantly, but he didn’t know how she change her personality so suddenly, if she changed for real, then the round to hospital was really worthwhile.

    However, even if he noticed the changes in Yu MianMian, Yu Xing was only surprised for a short while. For him, Yu MianMian is just a cheap little sister who needs some care from him after his parents pass away. He had no emotional attachment towards her and doesn’t loves her.

    The age difference between his sister and him is too big. When she was born, he was already eight years old, and they were separated for many years. It was destined that they cannot be like any ordinary brother and sister duo.

    One sitting and other standing, the two looked at each other speechlessly. At the entrance of the dinning room next door, Madam Yu leaned out with a smile and said: ” MianMian you woke up? come over for dinner.”

    With the presence of Mother Yu, Yu Mian let out a sigh of relief and immediately turned around and rushing to her mother’s arms, she ran to embrace Madam Yu’s arm, and said softly, “Mom, I’m starving to death.”

    Madam Yu smiled and squeezed her little daughter’s cheek affectionately: “Mianmian, Eat more at dinner, look at your little face, you are getting all thinner.”

    The mother and daughter ignored the Yu Xing behind, but Yu Mian deliberately did not dare to stay in front of him anymore. Yu Mian always felt that he would see through her and his eyes are really scary.

    Madam Yu only held her daughter with heart eyes and didn’t pay much attention to her son at all. They owe her, their relationship with their daughter has always been her heart struck in a knot, so she is compliant with Yu Mian in order to make up for the broken family relationship with her daughter.

    The daughter finally grew up and became sensible, and became the intimate little padded jacket ( intimate spot ) in her heart. Madam Yu couldn’t help but want to hold her and hide her in her pocket.

    Yu Xing didn’t think there was anything to be jealous of, after all, he was so old, it was impossible to compete for his parents’ favor.

    He has no idea about Yu Mian’s changes, but he was happy to see the change happen. Usually he is busy with work and can’t take care of his parents. If Yu Mian really gets better, she can accompany their parents more in the future and would finally stop looking for opportunities to urge him to marry.

    The family sat on the dining table. Same as noon, Yu Mian was fed by Madam Yu. Occasionally, Yu’s father would give her two chopsticks full of dishes. She didn’t even bother to worry about her brother who was too powerful and looked terrible. Her belly was full with food and the whole heart is warm from the care of her family.

    Yu mian don’t have a big appetite, she was been fed by her parents all the time, which is the fastest way to eat and rest at the same time.

    Father Yu and Mother Yu waited for her to finish eating before moving the chopsticks again, Yu Xing ate slowly, and soon he finished eating, took the napkin and wiped his lips.

    Throwing the tissue into the trash can, Yu Xing raised his eyes, and directed his gaze at the girl who was lazily being fed, and asked: “Since you are sensible, what are your next thoughts and arrangements?”

    Yu Mian was holding the bowl of soup while sipping, when she heard the unexpected sentence, she was stunned, unable to reacted.

    Maybe it’s was because of the presence of  her parents or Yu Xing’s aura on the table was not so strong, she regained her stature, suddenly Yu Mian is no longer so afraid of him.

    Actually infact, she wanted an elder brother very much. When she was in school, every time she saw her classmates with an elder brother, she felt very envious.

    With a brother, even if her parents pass away, she will not be the only one left. In school, every time someone called her a child without parents or bullied her, she looked forward to having a brother who would come down from the sky and help her beat those children away.

    Swallowing the soup in her mouth, Yu Mian thought about it seriously, and said, “I am too far behind in my studies, brother, can you find a tutor for me?”

T/N:- First of all, I want to apologise to my dear readers, yesterday something happened and because of which I wasn’t able to translate. I will try to make up the chapters as soon as possible.

Secondly, My mood was down but looking the comments by readers made me feel warm, I love literature but I couldn’t purse the career as my main. So translating was another form to feel close to literary works. Ofcourse I am also working for some funds too lol. Today’s TMI:- Tomorrow is a festival, it’s happens to indicate the start of spring season. Because of it,  π~π I had to do some extra house chores ahaha.
